Nanthinidevi, the wife of the person arrested in the incident, said:
“the villagers of Andankulam, Kumulamunai, had been evicted from their village by the army in 1984 and had to migrate and live in other areas for more than 30 years...
....We returned after the war, but were being denied from setting up even makeshift housing, by the army and the Department of Forests....
....Despite this, as we were preparing to move to our native village to clear the land and set up temporary housing, the Army, along with the Department of Wildlife, imposed restrictions on us and forcibly arrested and prosecuted my husband....
... Yesterday evening [25th March] the Army, Police and Department of Wildlife visited us and threatened us whilst we were working on our land, and forcibly took away the items from inside the makeshift house and arrested my husband and another person...
...An officer of the Department of Wildlife came to attack me, as I was alone as a married woman, threateningly stating that everyone should leave this land immediately and no one should even think about settling down here...
...In 1984, when I was 12 years old, the army set fire to all the houses in our village.”
