BREAKING—The giant ship blocking the Suez Canal has been freed by salvage crews. Yet unclear how soon the Suez Canal will be open for traffic. #EVERGIVEN
2) “Salvage teams freed the Ever Given in the Suez Canal, according to maritime services provider Inchcape, almost a week after the giant vessel ran aground in one of the world’s most important trade paths.”
3) “While the ship is floating again, it wasn’t immediately clear how soon the waterway would be open to traffic, or how long it will take to clear the logjam of more than 450 ships stuck, waiting and en route to the Suez that have identified it as their next destination.
4) “The backlog is one more strain for global supply chains already stretched by the pandemic as the canal is a conduit for about 12% of global trade. Some ships have already opted for the long and expensive trip around the southern tip of Africa instead of Suez.
5) The breakthrough in the rescue attempt came after diggers removed 27,000 cubic meters of sand, going deep into the banks of the canal.
6) Wind gust possible original culprit.
The Ever Given experienced strong winds and gusts in excess of 35 to 40 miles an hour around the time of its grounding in the Suez Canal according to an analysis from weather technology company ClimaCell
7) here was what they did to clear it all weekend...
8) One blockade torn down... another blockade to go
Holy Smokes—more contagious #P1 🇧🇷 variant is a runaway train in British Columbia🇨🇦: +100 new P1 cases in single day! (from 270 total yesterday to now 370).
DISGUSTED beyond words. A 65 year old Asian lady brutally kicked and beaten in broad daylight in Manhattan. Worse—3 bystanders did nothing!! Even more worse—the security guard closed the door to ignore it!! She is still hospitalized with fractured pelvis.
2) it’s so scary for Asian Americans right now that @AndrewYang is advising no Asians walk outside alone—only go out in pairs. #StopAsianHate
3) “Reports of anti-Asian hate crimes have risen sharply during the pandemic, often triggered by people falsely blaming Asian-Americans for spreading the coronavirus, according to police departments across the country.
@CDCDirector: “Our data from CDC today suggest that vaccinated people do not carry the virus.”
We have lots of data you can often still carry it. Fauci even says so.
I love the CDC—but they may have to walk this back. #COVID19
2) 90% efficacy for the mRNA vaccines against infection is *not* 100%. This is why Fauci says we still need to mask if vaccinated.
3) Why am I nitpicking? Because this is important. Saying “you don’t carry the virus” is what right wing anti mask people say those vaccinated. This is what Rand Paul says to justify no masks. And for asymptomatic cases, protection is not perfect either. academic.oup.com/cid/advance-ar…
Hospital ICUs overwhelmed despite fast vaccinations—Chile 🇨🇱 made a critical mistake—its government eased restrictions on travel, business and schools much too early, creating a false sense of confidence that pandemic was over. This always been my fear. 🧵 nytimes.com/2021/03/30/wor…
2) “But the country’s speedy and efficient vaccination drive — only Israel, UAE & Seychelles have vaccinated more per capita — gave Chileans a false sense of security and contributed to a sharp spike in new infections and deaths that is overloading the health care system.”
3) “The surge in cases, even as >1/3 of Chile has received at least the first dose of a Covid-19 vaccine, serves as a cautionary tale for other nations looking to vaccination drives to quickly put an end to the era of beleaguered economies, closed borders, and social distancing.
Not sure if wise—German 🇩🇪 Health Minister and 16 state health ministers on Tuesday decided to suspend the routine use of the AstraZeneca #COVID19 vaccine for people agr <60 at an emergency meeting. But allowed <60 under discretion of personal doctors. 🧵 dw.com/en/germany-res…
2) I’m head scratching — if this uncertain clotting thing is real, then why didn’t UK or India (one of the largest maker and user of it) find it in their country? UK has top notch epidemiologists. It’s the same vaccine after all, unless it’s a batch issue?
3) If it’s a batch issue, then that should be able to be traced. But I haven’t seen data it’s a batch issue yet either.
Bold claims needs replication. And this clot thing needs to be replicated in UK and other countries besides 🇩🇪 that uses AstraZeneca. Canada should check too.
FLORIDA UNDERCOUNTING COVID DEATHS—new study says 4,924 excess deaths should have been counted as resulting from #COVID19. Deaths were determined by Florida Governor directly-appointed medical examiners, which have “been subject to political pressures”. 🧵 news.yahoo.com/florida-covid-…
2) “The impact of the pandemic in Florida “is significantly greater than the official COVID-19 data suggest,” the researchers wrote.
3) “They came to that conclusion by comparing the number of estimated deaths for a six-month period in 2020, from March to September, to the actual number of deaths that occurred, a figure known as “excess deaths” because they exceed the estimate.”
