@calvinharris “I don’t need to explain myself that much because he knows what I’m looking for. Articulating it has always been an issue for me. Because he knows me so well it’s effortless for everyone”
@emilnava “We’re friends. We talk all the time. I always can judge straight away if Calvin will like something. I’ll drive around with Calvin booming the song in the car talking about visuals. We back and forth until we find something that works”
“We both have a shared love of nature. Even if something is hi-tech we’re trying to be rooted in nature”
(loved the story of how fish have been a theme in their lives with their families/where they worked)
“Keeping the train on the tracks is one of the hardest things. These videos can be big machines and it can sometimes feel like you’re at war”
On "Feels"
“It had Katy Perry, Pharrell, Big Sean, and Calvin. It was a lot of work to get them on set at the same time. I stepped into the bathroom and said to myself ‘Don’t mess this up’. And then the camera started jamming. The stress is what you don’t see.”
“When I started I used to do everything myself because I was in a small town in Scotland”
“It’s like a high concept movie where you can put the whole idea on the back of a cigarette packet. It’s deconstructing it before you write it”
@calvinharris on how he started making electronic music in the late 90s
“Dance music was big back in the 90s. I was using an Amiga 500 Plus to make music. My brother wrote a manual for OctaMED. It’s ‘Octa-’ because you had 8 tracks. For example, channel 1 had a hi-hat.”
“The graphics and the audio on the Amiga were advanced beyond anything else on the market. When Shadow of the Beast 2 came out it was like ‘Whoaaa!’”
On the music industry coming back from the pandemic
@calvinharris “It’s a good question, but an impossible one. Everyone’s been through hell and I hope when we get back we can remember what it is to be human and what it is to love one another, more than ever”
@emilnava “It’s hard to say. Nothing is going to compare to standing with your friends listening to live music. The idea seems very distant right now but I hope we can learn from this and come out better people. I’m happy to see things seem to be picking back u”
And one final note from @calvinharris on whether the pandemic changes what he wants to say with his music
“No it reinforces it. I want my music to be happier and more uplifting than ever. No darkness whatsoever”
// On what PMing is:
- It’s nebulous. You wear many hats.
- PMs make sure the right products get built right at the right time for the right customer.
- You lead teams by influence, not authority, and responsibility lies on your shoulders
.@shishirmehrotra "It’s the guy at the toaster company that makes sure the toaster gets built, that it gets built on time, and that it gets out to the right customers. "

The winning product becomes the best product
Companies that take a big market share are able to double down on R&D which gives a significant advantage in the long term
Marketing is instrumental in making a winning product - case-in-point, the relatively weaker Intel 8086 processor was branded as a more comprehensive solution, making it the IBM PC’s brain & knocking out its competition
🚨 🚨 🚨 NEW OBSERVER EFFECT: It's my pleasure to publish this amazing, wide-ranging conversation with @tobi founder and CEO of @Shopify. We touched on dozens of topics from Shopify, gaming, culture to family. Link and some of the many highlights below 👇
On scheduled meetings, themes and green-pathing. Highly encourage reading this section in full (including where Tobi deletes all recurring meetings at Shopify!).
On enneagrams and being a comprehensivist (and hopefully this interview is comprehensive! 🙂)
Some folks who I appreciate/admire/a little bit jealous of/learn from for their skills online. Also, just fun people to follow.
If you’re getting into creating content online, you can learn from all of these folks. 👇
1. @APompliano and @JoePompliano. Everyone knows “bitcoin never sleeps” Pomp but Joe has gone from 0 to 77k followers in a few short months. They’re the Hemsworths of social media ( and have more brothers waiting!)
2. @abarrallen has gone from Uber exec to co-founder of Fast and you’ll learn a ton on how to do consistent/simple branding by reading her tweets. Fast!
