(1) Football (soccer) is huge in the UK, esp. in England. All the major clubs have ardent fans around the world, including @Arsenal, with a fans' YouTube channel @AFTVmedia.

Former AFTV personality Claude Callegari died two days ago aged 58.

AFTV had dropped him in 2020.
(2) Fans of #RIPClaude have said he was open a few years ago about having mental health struggles. Later, he he was fired after making a racist comment on a livestream in July 2020. More recently, he fended off hateful tweets & alluded to thoughts of suicide.
(3) It appears he died by suicide.

Kudos to @max69752565 for tweeting these suicide hotline numbers for various countries.

It's good practice to provide these whenever you write about the issue. I support talking about it; others claim it's better not to. IMO they are wrong.
(4) You might be wondering what the firing comment was. TIL that some people refer to Asians as DVD, a reference to making bootleg copies of DVDs and selling them at market stalls.

bbc.com/news/newsbeat-…

extra.ie/2020/07/16/spo…
(5) I can see why referring to Asians with "DVD" is considered a slur. There are no doubt similar terms used in many countries to refer to various racial or ethnic groups. The player has South Korean heritage.

The slur was noted as far back as 2005:

thefootballnetwork.net/main/s346/st65…
(6) AFTV made this 5-tweet statement about the slur at the time:

(7) And made this statement today. They are getting a lot of criticism today, which I think is unfair. They did their best to help him and were caught between a rock and hard place.

It's overly simplistic to blame anyone for Claude's tragic death.

(8) And it's a cop-out to say it was solely due to having depression. Suicide is not straightforward thing. Casting blame around doesn't really help.

I've lost people to suicide. It's normal for everyone who was close to the person to blame yourself. You have to fight that.
(9) Eventually I realized there was nothing I could have done to prevent those suicides.

The pandemic itself is likely to be a major factor in any suicide occurring in the past year and next couple of years. It has rocked peoples' world.
(10) The pandemic is causing suicides directly and indirectly.

Unemployment for any reason is associated with depression, often in people who have never had it before. Especially men, and especially those over 40.

Professional help is patchy, at best.
(11) Research shows that better access to high quality talk therapy and medications can lower suicide rates. But accessing these services has become more difficult in many places, because of the pandemic.

NZ's suicide rate was trending upward fast, even before the pandemic.
(12) In my experience, where suicide is the result of depression or other illness, the person has reached the end of what _they_ see as their options for relief from the pain they're in.

Sometimes it's due to severe illness like mania or psychosis. Loss of touch with reality.
(13) I experienced suicidal thinking as a young adult. Eventually I overcame it and now at around 50 I can offer (amateur) support to those going through it, or their loved ones. I have to come to really appreciate being alive and making the most of that, despite challenges.
(14) It's just an extremely sad situation, for Claude and everyone who loved, liked, and appreciated him.

RIP, big guy.

(1) Sorry @benshapiro but if you're correctly reported here, you're wrong & you're not helping the GOP cause.

There are measurable differences btwn the number of polling stations in majority black areas vs majority white areas in certain states eg GA.

We should change that. Image
(2) If the Georgia GOP wants to show it believes in equality of access to polling stations then it should work on making sure they are more fairly distributed throughout the state.

You and I would drive for miles to be able to vote but not everyone has a car or much gas money.
(3) For years, I've seen instances of drastically reducing the number of polling stations in certain areas right before election day, across the US.

Here's one example, but it wasn't the GOP that time.

(1) An interesting development in Georgia, where so many current controversies seem to be playing out.

I watched this clip then ended up finding out who Mary Norwood is: ajc.com/news/atlanta-n…
(2) Gotta say I am rather unimpressed by Mary Norwood. Either say you're a Trump supporter or not. It's pretty simple.

How in the world you expect to get elected to anything in ATL in future is beyond me.

So many people have aligned themselves with Sidney Powell. Not smart.
(3) Regarding the GA state speaker's letter to the ATL Mayor about street crime there... yikes. Both politicians are missing the point but at least the Mayor doesn't align herself with those who condone domestic terrorism, AFAIK.

I'm referring to the Trump faction of the GOP.

(1) The latest example of stupidity by activists trying to politicize everything, often by referring to race.

Both sides do it! This time it's the MAGA crowd. I don't call them conservatives, bc I'm part of the #PostTrumpGOP trying to save the party from the toxic Trump brand.
(2) The alleged murder happened 4 days ago. MAGA activists have jumped to conclusions iso taking just 10 minutes to find the facts.

It was the DC Met Police who used the term "accident," not particularly CNN.

It was clumsy but it's not unusual for LEOs to use the term.
(3) Read the PD statement below. As usual, the first they heard of the incident was when a bystander reported what he or she thought was a car accident. Only later did the PD find it was an alleged murder and car crash/wreck.

(1) "I was born in a small town, and I can breathe in a small town" - John Mellencamp, 1985

We didn't have a mall, let alone two of them, lol.

Our experiences mean #GenXWillSaveTheWorld.

Bad mall
(2) I've been thinking about American politics since the early 1980s, before I even went to high school. Also British, New Zealand, and Australian politics.

I ended up entering the NZ political world as a policy analyst and PR advisor after earning a political science degree.
(3) After some years I became so frustrated with the way things were going in my chosen profession that I walked away from it.

Now I share my opinions here & feel completely unencumbered in that. It's good for the soul to express yourself, test your ideas & learn from others.

(1) The word "heckled" is trending bc Ds think it's funny that Rs used it.

OK kids, what word should they have used instead? Approached? Saw? Heard from?

Why were cartel members near a group of US Senators trying to gather first hand info about a national security issue?
(2) Why were the Senators there, you ask.

Because they have been trying to get the Biden administration to keep it's transparency promise by allowing reasonable oversight access to federal sites, to allow Congress to do its job.

The Trump admin allowed Ds & media access.
(3) And are you saying the level of attempted illegal immigration at the Southern Border right now is NOT a humanitarian crisis?

Or is it easier to focus on the choice of one word, "heckled"?

Democrats, you would get far more political mileage out of this incident if you understood the context of the GA exec branch's security concerns in relation to 1/6.

The threat they are justifiably trying to manage is from the Qanon MAGA crowd. Info about that below.
GA is, unfortunately, home to some of the most violent & seditious elements among the MAGA movement, Qanon, & those arrested for rioting on 1/6.

Gov Kemp's daughter had been dating Harrison Deal for 2 years & was likely to end up marrying her.

He tragically died in Dec 2020.
I'm not saying the arrest today had anything to do with a specific security threat. I'm saying that law enforcement charged with keeping a governor safe would be on high alert given events of recent months. Trump publicly harassed & lied about Kemp for weeks. Kemp kept his cool.
