I figured I would take this moment to say that this will be the last public interview/comment I will provide regarding gun violence, GVP, mental health, suicides, and my story for the foreseeable future. I have done this heartbreaking work for the last 8 years of my life.
I have risked my safety and life in an effort to make the world a better place and to try to help save lives. I took the pain of my own tragedy of my mom's gun suicide and used it as fuel to do the things I felt were and are important.
But, in doing so, I failed to take the time to actually deal with her suicide & its impact on me and my life. And that was an active choice I made;
I felt that if I allowed the pain to go on unchecked that it would allow me to be more raw and authentic when I gave a speech or told my story.
The problem is that I failed to account for the other side of that equation...how am I feeling when the speech is done? It never registered for me, well until recently.
So, I have taken a big step back away from the movement in order to work on these internal issues of mine. You won't see me talking about it at all until I get to a point where I am ready to do so again and I have no idea what that will look like or when it will happen.
Thankfully @Everytown was able to help me get the help I needed as I go on this journey of finally facing tragedy's demon. I am forever grateful that I've been able to find a therapist that I like and that has the kind of training that can actually help me.
Lastly, I hope there are more of you who read this who are willing to get help if you need it. You're not weak or less of a person for getting help. You're no less of a man or woman. You're no less tough.
We have to tear down the stigma that clouds mental health so more people feel empowered to get help vs being afraid. We clearly need to make sure more people have access to it as well.
Mental healthcare shouldn't only be available for those that can afford it or who know the right people. And yes, it should absolutely be easier to get mental healthcare than it is to get a gun.

Wisconsin’s 4 Republican “Representatives” voted no. They voted against you, your neighbors, those that need help. This is why you MUST vote to replace them in November. @WisDems#WILeg

Hey @taylor4arizona, I sincerely wish you are able to get the help you need. Substance abuse isn’t a partisan issue and folks need to see that it is ok to admit that one needs help & that life will continue. I hope you’re ok & that you’re able to beat this. Wishing you the best
In case you’re wondering why I, a proud Democrat, tweeted at @taylor4arizona: 1. I’m human before I’m partisan 2. I’ve run for Congress myself & know the grind that it is & the stress it inflicts on your life 3. I was once addicted to opioids too.
I didn’t tell anyone at the time that I was hooked nor did I ask for help. I was fortunate to beat my addiction on my own, but for the 4-6 months that I consumed ridiculous amounts of Percocet & Vicodin, I was a different person & was afraid to admit the grip it had on me.
“President Trump’s deleted tweet is the latest example of his endless efforts to divide Americans. I inherited the police practice of stop-and-frisk, and as part of our effort to stop gun violence it was overused.
By the time I left office, I cut it back by 95%, but I should've done it faster and sooner. I regret that and I have apologized — and I have taken responsibility for taking too long to understand the impact it had on Black and Latino communities.”
“But this issue and my comments about it do not reflect my commitment to criminal justice reform and racial equity. I believe we need to end mass incarceration and during my tenure we reduced incarceration by 40% and juvenile confinement by more than 60%.
.@MikeBloomberg was wrong. Period. There’s no debating that. I don’t excuse nor absolve him of his comments or of the stop and frisk policy. He’s acknowledged it, apologized for it, and has subsequently developed a diverse base of support in endorsements, staff...
and volunteers including growing black support. People have to weigh this election and vote their priorities. Many voters have seen their ideological favorites drop out and have now prioritized defeating Trump along with electing Dems up and down the ballot.
I believe that @Mike2020 is the strongest candidate to take on Donald Trump and as a party, I don’t think we should be so rigid to never allow our candidates to acknowledge mistakes in the past. I think it’s a sign of strength, not weakness.
My friend @ELaffGarb. There are few people in my life that I know who would legit drop everything and come running to help me. Erica is one of those people. She called me on what would’ve been my mom’s 63rd birthday. Erica say on the phone
With me for 30 minutes and I hardly said a word. I could barely breathe. But E knew how I felt without me having to verbalize it. She kept reminding me to breathe. She helped me get through that shitty moment.
After the bombings, many of the officers of my church and other trusted friends urged me to hire a bodyguard and armed watchmen for my house. When my father came to town, he concurred with both of these suggestions.
I tried to tell them that I had no fears now and consequently needed no weapons for protection. This they would not hear. They insisted that I protect the house and family, even if I didn't want to protect myself.
