🚨Happening now: #txlege Senate is debating #SB7, the omnibus anti-voting bill that would make voting much more difficult for millions of Texans. Watch with us: tlcsenate.granicus.com/MediaPlayer.ph…
Within a minute of speaking--THAT'S FALSE--SB7 does not create a VBM tracker. It requires SOS to develop an online VBM tracker if there is specific appropriation. Otherwise, it's discretionary by the SOS. An effort to say they created a VBM tracker without definitively doing it.
Fact Check: Sen. Hughes saying that people receiving VBM apps from counties automatically would mislead people into thinking they can vote by mail when they can't- but the forms clearly explain who is eligible and that you should only apply to vote by mail if you are eligible.
While the Senators are on the subject of poll-watchers- Black voters and other voters of color are more likely to be victims of poll-watcher intimidation. So #SB7's expansion of their authority is deeply problematic. #txlege #TXDeservesBetter
Sen. Hughes said Texas should have reduced early voting hours because it would be "easier for political parties to find poll watchers". Why should Texas voters have to pay the price to make things easier for political parties? #TXDeservesBetter
Sen. Hughes is wrong: poll watchers are not the 'eyes of the public.' They are agents of political campaigns to whom #SB7 gives new powers to harass voters they don't like.
If political parties find it hard to find poll watchers, that's not a reason to restrict the right to vote.
Sen Seliger defends #SB7 by claiming that it's not a Georgia-style voter suppression bill b/c it doesn't prohibit passing out food/water to voters. But like SB 7, it prohibits counties from sending VBM forms proactively to voters. businessinsider.com/georgia-new-el…
Sen. Hughes is dodging lots of questions about who's targeted by #SB7 after being told that Texans of color are the most likely to use drive-thru voting. Why ever could that be? 🤔 #TXDeservesBetter
Sen. @whitmire_john asking Sen. Hughes whether #SB7 is really about the national movement towards voter suppression that spawned in part from Trump's lies about the 2020 election.

(He won't say it, but yes, of course it's to do with that)
Senator Whitmire brings up example to Senator Hughes around the problems with allowing partisan poll watchers to videotape voters. What if a voter is a victim of violence and does not want their location known?
Hughes says all voter registration info is public already anyway, but doesn't mention that victims of violence have the option of entering the Attorney General's confidentiality program specifically so that their perpetrators don't know where they live: sos.state.tx.us/elections/laws…
Hughes just claimed that new restrictions on rides to the polls are necessary because people are "overpowering" voters and driving them to the polls.
Think about how wild that is: he's saying there's a massive and undetected wave of kidnapping happening every election.
In case y'all wanted our opinion, referring to one of the only Black Senators in the #txlege as the "kingpin of voter fraud in Harris County" seems pretty damn racist to us.
Ironically, the Senate continues to debate #SB7 after the hour that SB 7 would force early voting to stop (9pm). 👀#txlege #TXDeservesBetter
Alright friends. The Senate is recessing for a bit before starting on amendments. Our team has an 8am hearing on #HB6, so our coverage for #SB7 will end so our staff is rested and ready. We'll let y'all know the results on the amendments in the morning.

Our own @jcslattery is about to testify against the anti-voter #HB6 (after many, many hours)! We'll cover his testimony here, but feel free to watch with us too: tlchouse.granicus.com/MediaPlayer.ph…
“Texas in 2020 was the hardest place to vote in the entire country: we have no online voter registration, only a few discrete groups of Texans can vote by mail, and 750 polling places were closed between 2013 and 2019, predominantly in communities of color.” @jcslattery #TXlege
#HB6 would mean that “statements by public officials about the mere existence of vote-by-mail, or explanations about how to apply for and cast a mail ballot, could be interpreted as efforts to encourage (and therefore solicit) people to vote by mail.” @jcslattery #txlege

Happening now: the House Elections Hearing in which #HB6 has been rescheduled is starting. HB 6 is an omnibus anti-voter bill, like SB 7. Watch with us: tlchouse.granicus.com/MediaPlayer.ph… #TXDeservesBetter
Here's what #HB6 does and why we're adamantly against it:
Fact check: The Voting Rights Act specifically protects assistance, because it is used by people with disabilities and those with limited English.

“Today marks 68 days since the Biden administration took executive action to place the border wall on pause and initiate a 60 day review for the appropriated and redirected resources.” - @RobertoAleLopez
"During this review period #RGV border justice advocates like myself sent a letter to @POTUS & cabinet members urging them to:
-Cancel the contracts
-Dismiss all cases
-Restore+revest the land
-Consult with communities instead of giving $ to DHS.
But this hasn’t yet happened."

THREAD 🧵👇🏽: Yesterday, @TXCivilRights attorneys testified against the voter suppression omnibus bill, #SB7. We flagged the inevitable discriminatory impact SB7 would have on already-marginalized Texans. #txlege
What you didn't see during verbal testimony were the three charts attached to our written testimony with demographic breakdowns on who used the two new voting options offered by @HarrisVotes in 2020: extended hours & drive thru voting. We’d like to share this data here.
Limiting voting hours (like 24 hour voting) and flexibility in polling locations (like drive thru voting) as SB7 seeks to do would disproportionately harm communities of color, who tend to have less flexible work schedules, by significant margins. See the graphs below 👇🏽

Our own @jcslattery is finally getting to testify on all the voting bills in this hearing! You can watch along with us here: tlcsenate.granicus.com/MediaPlayer.ph… #txlege #TXDeservesBetter
James pointing out how the grand majority of these bills, including #SB7, #SB1114, and #SB1235, would make voting harder for people of color, people with disabilities, and elderly voters. #TXDeservesBetter
James correctly points out that this hearing, like the House Elections Committee, has seen Black legislators disrespected by white legislators, and that the rules around invited testimony vs public testimony have primarily benefitted white voices over those of Texans of color.

Since this hearing makes it hard to dive into the details of the bills, we'll do it here, starting w/ #SB1340. It proposes major changes to the voter list maintenance process w/ discriminatory registration guidelines aimed at discouraging people of color & immigrants from voting.
#SB1340 would make the Secretary of State, not local registrars, the primary manager of the voter registration process, giving the person in this position *unchecked power* to deny people the right to vote based on their race and immigration status.
#SB1340 would require most Texans registering to vote to first have their citizenship verified by the Secretary of State, violating the federal mandate that voters must be able to register up to 30 days before an election.
