Healing Trauma: “The prevailing brain-disease model overlooks four fundamental truths: (1) our capacity to destroy one another is matched by our capacity to heal one another. Restoring relationships and community is central to restoring well-being; #Justice4Australia #Auspol 1/30
(2) language gives us the power to change ourselves and others by communicating our experiences, helping us to define what we know, and finding a common sense of meaning; 2/30
(3) we have the ability to regulate our own physiology, including some of the so-called involuntary functions of the body and brain, through such basic activities as breathing, moving, and touching; and 3/30
(4) we can change social conditions to create environments in which children and adults can feel safe and where they can thrive.” 4/30
“Being able to feel safe with other people is probably the single most important aspect of mental health; safe connections are fundamental to meaningful and satisfying lives.” 5/30
"Traumatized people chronically feel unsafe inside their bodies: The past is alive in the form of gnawing interior discomfort. Their bodies are constantly bombarded by visceral warning signs, and, in an attempt to control these processes, 6/30
they often become expert at ignoring their gut feelings and in numbing awareness of what is played out inside. They learn to hide from their selves.” 7/30
“In coping with the dread that persisted long afterward, these patients had learned to shut down the brain areas that transmit the visceral feelings and emotions that accompany and define terror. Yet in everyday life, those same brain areas are responsible for registering 8/30
the entire range of emotions and sensations that form the foundation of our self-awareness, our sense of who we are. What we witnessed here was a tragic adaptation: In an effort to shut off terrifying sensations, they also deadened their capacity to feel fully alive.” 9/30
“If you come from an incomprehensible world filled with secrecy and fear, it’s almost impossible to find the words to express what you have endured. If you grew up unwanted and ignored, it is a major challenge to develop a visceral sense of agency and self-worth.” 10/30
“As the ACE study shows, child abuse and neglect is the single most preventable cause of mental illness, the single most common cause of drug and alcohol abuse, and a significant contributor to leading causes of death: diabetes, heart disease, cancer, stroke, and suicide.” 11/30
“Trauma affects the entire human organism—body, mind, and brain. In PTSD the body continues to defend against a threat that belongs to the past.” 12/30
“After trauma the world is experienced with a different nervous system. The survivor’s energy now becomes focused on suppressing inner chaos, at the expense of spontaneous involvement in their life.” 13/30
“It is enormously difficult to organize one’s traumatic experiences into a coherent account—a narrative with a beginning, a middle, and an end.” 14/30
“When something reminds traumatized people of the past, their brain reacts as if the traumatic event were happening in the present.” 15/30
“The stress hormones of traumatized people take much longer to return to baseline and spike quickly and disproportionately in response to mildly stressful stimuli.” 16/30
“Silence about trauma also leads to death—the death of the soul. Silence reinforces the godforsaken isolation of trauma. Being able to say aloud to another human being, “I was raped” 17/30
or “I was battered by my husband” or “My parents called it discipline, but it was abuse” or “I’m not making it since I got back from Iraq,” is a sign that healing can begin.” 18/30
“Neuroscience research shows that the only way we can change the way we feel is by becoming aware of our inner experience and learning to befriend what is going inside ourselves.” 19/30
“As long as you keep secrets and suppress information, you are fundamentally at war with yourself…The critical issue is allowing yourself to know what you know. That takes an enormous amount of courage.” 20/30
“As I often tell my students, the two most important phrases in therapy, as in yoga, are “Notice that” and “What happens next?” Once you start approaching your body with curiosity rather than with fear, everything shifts.” 21/30
“Mainstream trauma treatment has paid scant attention to helping terrified people to safely experience their sensations and emotions.” 22/30
“We just did a study on yoga for people with PTSD. We found that yoga was more effective than any medicine that people have studied up to now. That doesn't mean that yoga cures it, but yoga makes a substantial difference in the right direction.” 23/30
“Beneath the surface of protective parts of trauma survivors there exists an ‘undamaged essence’, a ‘Self that is confident, curious, and calm’, a ‘Self that has been sheltered from destruction’ by various protectors that have emerged in their efforts to ensure survival.” 24/30
Importantly: “Once those protectors trust that it is safe to separate, the ‘Self will spontaneously emerge’, and the parts can be enlisted in the healing process.” 25/30
“Trauma constantly confronts us with our fragility and with man’s inhumanity to man but also with our extraordinary resilience.” 26/30
“I can’t begin to imagine how I would have coped with what many of my patients have endured, and I see their symptoms as part of their strength—the ways they learned to survive. 27/30
And despite all their suffering many have gone on to become loving partners and parents, exemplary teachers, nurses, scientists, and artists.” 28/30
“Most great instigators of social change have intimate personal knowledge of trauma. Oprah Winfrey, Maya Angelou, Nelson Mandela, and Elie Wiesel. Read the life history of any visionary, and you will find insights and passions that came from having dealt with devastation.” 29/30

A toxic culture: Why I switched from the ‘intellect’ to ‘intelligence’? There’s a time and place for the critic. Otherwise, it’s toxic. If you people please, you’ll waste your life, others’ and the planet, for someone who cares not for this: the ‘critic’. #Justice4Australia 1/23
The critic said to me: Find highest pay job. I was a ‘permanent student’. I care ‘too much’ about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Refugees. People with a disability. My partner’s from a ‘third world country’: Is using me for money. Or get his kids to Australia. 2/23
When I worked as a disability support worker, the critic asked: why do you hang around with people who slow you down? After my first episode of psychosis, I put on 30kg from meds. The critic noted: gee you’ve had a good winter. Which I later learnt meant I was fat. 3/23

‘Bookmark’ this tweet for threads on ‘clarity’ for ‘integrity’ (i.e. integration). I wrote some. The rest are classics: Carl Sagan, Oliver Sacks, Gabor Maté, Sir Ken Robinson, Sadhguru, Kristen Neff and Brené Brown. They go perfect together. Enjoy.👇🏼#Justice4Australia #Auspol

‘Self-esteem’ (special and above average): competitive, exclusive, prejudice; I must beat you to come out ‘on top’. ‘Self-compassion’ (kindness, common humanity, mindfulness): primary, inclusive, collaborative; like every child I am already ‘whole’.👇🏼 #Justice4Australia #Auspol

It’s time to strike for ‘Integrity’. A house needs it or it will collapse. A country needs it so it’s citizens can celebrate differences remaining whole and undivided. Beautifully, it is the final stage of recovering from trauma: ‘Integration’. That’s clarity.👇🏼#Justice4Australia

Every issue in Australia has the same source. Confidence without clarity and a violation of human rights: safety, freedom, health and wellbeing. 👇🏼#EnoughIsEnough #TimeToStrike #Justice4Australia #Auspol

Can we have a National Strike for Grace, Brittany, Kate and every life the Australian Government has denied basic human rights: safety, freedom, health and wellbeing? Immediate top-down reform focused on clarity: science, compassion and action. #Justice4Australia #Auspol
