A modern “buyer beware” story. Must-include case study for ethical UX writing and designers (and courses).

Of course, it’s T****

The Trump operation refunded $122 million — more than 10% — of what it raised online in 2020.

The illustration is accurate but exaggerates scale (because it stops far below 100%). The narrative justifies the exaggeration
THE SCALE BOGGLES. Trump, RNC and shared accounts “refunded far more money to online donors in the last election cycle than every federal Democratic candidate and committee in the country combined.”
It started with pre-checked boxes for recurring contributions in March. It escalated via a technique the campaign called a “money bomb” - hiding a doubling of the donation.

COMBINED “more than 530,000 refunds worth $64.3 million to online donors.”
ALL opt-out, deliberately designed to be hard to see. Which is too damn easy to do online.

“Contributors had to wade through a fine-print disclaimer and manually uncheck a box to opt out.”

I thought the direct mail industry was shady. This makes them look like kindergartners.

Aside: I get the RedWin corollary to ActBlue...but look at verb choice (contest/competition versus individual behavior).

Plus, RedWin is a jarring name for a party known for hyping RedScare. It’s like they are rooting for Russia. (Maybe that’s not so dissonant after all.)

Compare and contrast: Administration erroneously blocking finances of a small Italian restaurant on its last day in office.

Administration facilitating states vaccinating 2.4 million people in 24 hours; 4.6 M in 48 hours.

59.8M Americans now fully vaccinated against Covid19.
CDC also reports “administered” data (moving doses from the state to vaccination centers so they can be scheduled):
8.1M doses since TH.
This makes April accelerated vaccinations possible

Matt Gaetz is being investigated for
*paying for sex
*statutory rape & sex trafficking
*showing coworkers nude photos of women he said he'd slept with
*dealing in fake IDs
*lying about extortion & the FBI
*campaign finance infractions

"Gaetz allegedly showed off to other lawmakers photos and videos of nude women he said he had slept with"

Yeah, allegation but it sure fits the stereotype here

I am SO damn tired of columnists reaching for the LAZY "Fauci was wrong about masks" back on March 3, 2020.

It's intellectually dishonest - and disinformation by omission - for two reasons.
FIRST, Fauci was referencing known research.
Two samples:
2019 - Effectiveness of commercial face masks to reduce personal PM exposure (not very)
2017 - The efficacy of medical masks and respirators against respiratory infection in healthcare workers (five studies)
Second, in the early days of the pandemic, the US was short on ALL masks, not just N-95.

Early public statements were also trying to prevent a run on masks, so that hospital staff and 1st responders would have access to protective equipment.

That effort FAILED.

This chapel isn’t really “the geographic center” of the continental US, despite getting that label in 1918. It appears, as a @TripAdvisor review states, ‘conservative’.

To The ReUnited States of America was one of the most trite ads I’ve seen, @jeep. Ever.

I’m weary of rural America being singled out as the “real” America.

Just as I’m weary of news orgs sending reporters “to the middle” of the country for ‘anthropologic’ stories.
The ad starts with a weathered boot and moves on to a nondenominational chapel that seats eight and that superimposes a cross on a map of the country.

WE ARE NOT A ‘CHRISTIAN’ NATION. WE HAVE NO STATE RELIGION.

Reminder: one person at wedding in Maine with 53 guests infected 27 guests.

Those 27 people infected at least 176 people over the next 38 days (a county jail 220 miles away, a rehab center 100 miles away).

Seven of those 176 people DIED.

kathyegill.substack.com/p/covid-19-day…
IF we had effective contact tracing (pretty much impossible given the scale of the infection in the US) - then everyone of these maskless partiers should be held accountable for everyone else they sicken, especially those who die.

WHY IS THIS NOT CRIMINAL NEGLIGENCE?
In ME, the wedding party flouted state rules.
The bar where the reception was held flouted state rules.

In FL, the Governor insists no rules are needed. Tampa Mayor Jane Castor promised: We are making sure this is a safe event for everyone."
Yeah, right.

It’s not the STANDS where COVID can run wild.

It’s the STREETS.

Biden’s “prove negative before flying” is useless against this madness. #SBLV
