What's that gang? You say it is #FluorideFriday? Why yes, yes it is! -|- "#Fluoride is highly effective at preventing caries and its use over the last 50 years has transformed dental health.” irelandsdentalmag.ie/fluoridation-t…
Ireland again. -|- "In 2002, a ‘north-south’ survey showed a substantial decline from 1984 in dental caries in both fluoridated and non-fluoridated communities in the Republic of Ireland, and in the non-fluoridated population of Northern Ireland."
"Reducing the underlying cause of disease through the restoration of normality, rather than adding a protective factor, is a more radical approach, and does not come with the risk of unwanted effects such as dental fluorosis.”
The rebuttal technique known as "T'aint neither!!" -|- "The first two points are evidently incorrect. The third point is technically valid in that it is impossible to conduct the highest quality type of study, a randomised controlled trial (RCT), for water fluoridation."
"#Fluorosis, if deemed to be aesthetically unacceptable,
can be managed with painless microabrasion, and the type of fluorosis seen in Ireland tends to be very mild, and not necessarily in need of treatment."
"However, the argument goes: “if fluoride causes this damage on teeth where we can see it, what’s it doing to the bones and other tissues we can’t see?” Frequently, the claim is made that fluorosis is a sign of systemic poisoning."
"Current theory is that the main cause of enamel fluorosis is the reduction of calcium levels in the developing enamel matrix, thereby impairing crystal formation." #FluorideFriday folly.
#TheyDontKnowAndTheyDoItAnyway -|- "These reports have highlighted the importance of investigating the trade-off between the benefits and risks of fluoride ingestion among the population."
Silly us, we thought that #fluoridation was to prevent tooth decay. 😏 -|- "The goal of fluoridation is to maximise the caries preventive benefits, while minimising the risks of fluorosis at a level that has an aesthetic impact."
#FluorideFriday fail. Will Irish #Dentistry ever decide to do some real #prevention? Are they ever going to bother to look? No. -|- “There may come a day when it is replaced by another strategy but for now it is crucial in our armamentarium.”
Questioning of the efficacy of fluoridation by #Irish #Dentists is out of the question. Even though the answer is right there, in front of the them.
Such trusting eyes. If our efforts result in just one little kid never having to suffer in a #Dental chair it is all worth it. #Prevention means no pain and suffering. Which all little kids deserve. Don't they?

Hydrofluoric acid. Bad stuff. publicintegrity.org/environment/ch…
"#Fluoride occurs in drinking water primarily as free fluoride. When ingested some fluorides combine with hydrogen ions to form hydrogen fluoride (HF), depending on the pH of the contents of the stomach (2.4% HF at pH 5; 96% HF at pH 2)."
"HF easily crosses the gastric epithelium, and is the major form in which fluoride is absorbed from the stomach"

Statement Submitted on Behalf of the American Medical Association by Dr George F Lull, Secretary and General Manager to the House Select Committee to Investigate Use of Chemicals With Special Reference to #Fluoridation of Drinking Water February 27 1952
Another difference between now and then. Concern with using supplements of #fluorine, in addition to #fluoridation, is today no longer a concern, or talked about much. And it is #ThrowBackThursday, #fumblethumbs

For a #WaybackWednesday this week, we go back to 1953-ish and "An Analysis of the Delaney Committee Report on the Fluoridation of Drinking Water". In which proponents of #fluoridation give lots of reasons why ignoring new research is a good thing. industrydocuments.ucsf.edu/docs/#id=fpkf0…
