1. Why do we allow police to be in unions? First, they cannot legally strike. Comp & work rules are by arbitration. Second, they are not workers in the classic sense. They carry the right to kill citizens based on their authority. They swear an oath to uphold the people's rights.
2. Would we tolerate the military forming a union? They are sworn to uphold the same rights but they are not paid overtime and don't have a union. IMO we need to pay police top salaries and end all overtime. Hire them as management and subject to review for advancement.
3. They should have rights to prevent arbitrary discipline and termination and have their discipline determined judicially like the military. But anyone carrying a firearm for "the state" needs to act like military members with no right to avoid daily responsibility for failings.
4. And when unions advise their members to tell a lie about their conduct, they should be considered accessories to the crime they are trying to cover. And before we hire a police officer they should pass a polygraph and psych screening to weed out sociopaths, racists & abusers.
5. Finally, because we make overtime a way to increase an officer's compensation we give an incentive to those who are willing to game the system. When they do, they are likely committing a crime. So the system recruits people into a criminal conspiracy. Give them a good salary
6. and attract better-qualified people to become law enforcement and these absurd violations of human rights will begin to decline. And yes, I am a union supporter and organized an @AFLCIO bargaining unit when I was 19. But I would not support a military union.
