BREAKING: ACOG win! The @US_FDA Acting Commissioner Janet Woodcock has notified @ACOG and @MySMFM that the agency will "exercise enforcement discretion" regarding #mifepristone through the duration of the #COVID19 public health emergency. 1/
This means that many patients in need of termination of early pregnancy will be able to access safe, effective mifepristone by mail, rather than having to risk avoidable COVID exposure to themselves and their clinicians. 2/
.@ACOG has long advocated for the @US_FDA to drop the burdensome in-person dispensing requirement for mifepristone, which provides no benefit to patients. We applaud the agency for prioritizing science over politics. Our full statement to come. 3/3

Thanks to years of #obgyn advocacy and decades of safe use of medication abortion, as of today, many patients will no longer need to risk unnecessary exposure to #COVID19 as a condition of using #mifepristone for abortion care. 1/
From our statement: "Requiring the medicine to be dispensed in person, then taken elsewhere at the patients’ discretion, is arbitrary and does nothing to bolster the safety of an already-safe medicine." 2/
"We are pleased to see mifepristone regulated on... the scientific evidence during the pandemic, rather than political bias against comprehensive reproductive health care, & we look forward to working with policy makers to ensure this principle governs post-pandemic care.” 3/
.@POTUS’ FY 22 discretionary budget proposal demonstrates a great step in the right direction with investments in critical programs that impact our members and their patients’ health. @acog is encouraged to see: 1/
- Over $200M to help address #maternalmortality and morbidity w/ a focus on addressing race-based inequities in maternal health outcomes through investments in rural areas, #MMRCs, training to improve culturally congruent care & more 2/
- Critical investments to promote health equity in health care system, confront racial disparities in health outcomes, expand access to culturally competent care, diversify the health care workforce, and address #SDOH 3/
.@ACOG hosted a virtual briefing on Thursday, where experts from ACOG, @MarchofDimes, and @ACNMmidwives briefed Congress about the unique challenges facing pregnant women in the #COVID19 pandemic. Watch the recorded briefing: bit.ly/3aiNXG0 Here are some highlights:
Sens. & Reps. should share evidence-based #COVID19 information w/constituents & encourage pregnant women to continue prenatal care & maintain strong communication w/their obstetric care team. Hospitals & licensed, accredited birth centers remain safe places to give birth. 3/
