Thread: As many if you know, I have spent the last year on the road taking care of #COVID19 patients. Over and over again, people in indoor spaces were getting sick. Even as #vaccines have changed things for us, we still know that indoor spaces are the riskiest. #COVIDisAirborne
2/ So I came across a life changing article in Jan. 2021. #CO2Monitoring as a way to measure indoor ventilation and “shared air,” how much of other people’s air you are breathing.
3/Carbon dioxide is different than carbon monoxide.
Carbon dioxide is what we exhale. In closed spaces,as more people exhale, sing, laugh, cough, the levels of CO2 rise. Measuring these CO2 levels tells us what the ventilation is like in the indoor space.
4/So my next question was, what levels if CO2 matter? Found an amazing group of scientists to follow on @Twitter who were helping to set the guidance for this. @kprather88@jljcolorado@j_g_allen to name a few. Amazing collaborative site to discuss.
6/How does this relate to #COVID19? States like Washington and California have started to mandate CO2 monitoring (schools/business) as a way to objectively measure ventilation & provide triggers for people to open windows, improve hvac etc.
I started to dig and found CO2 monitors which were used in other industries, but nothing super economical that could be deployed for EVERYONE. SO I did what every other Doctor Mama does. Called my friends and neighbors and said let’s do it ourselves
8/CO2Check was born, raised and built here in #Colorado! Portable, accurate, economical CO2 monitoring devices to help everyone feel safer indoors. #ventilation is still so important. How to use data to make your spaces safer.
9/what can you do to make your spaces safer?
-Open windows
-Start to measure how your CO2 levels change with ventilation
-Check in with your fave places to see what they are doing to make spaces safer
FYI-ventilationmatters but filters (HEPA) important!
Misconception #2: come back if “worse or short of breath”
-Most people can’t quantify short of breath, esp if they’ve never felt short of breath before
-Walk in place for 1 min.Sing your ABCs. If you can’t finish song or steps w/o breathing hard, you need to be seen immediately
Misconception #3: only old or unhealthy people die from #COVIDー19
-Everyone is at risk for #COVIDー19. I have cared for healthy 20,30&40 year olds who have died from covid or are now discharged home on oxygen because their lungs are destroyed.
