How does this happen?
Rise in BP, from labour and the delivery process can affect blood vessels, causing damage to the brain’s occipital complex.
This causes partial or complete loss of vision. Most times it isn’t permanent, and patient may recover their vision after a while.
Hypertension, also causes other complications like Preeclampsia and Eclampsia. Which comes with raised BP, headaches, leg swelling, protein in urine, and in severe cases, seizures.
Hypertension is a major cause of maternal and fetal mortality in Africa.
This can be prevented.
Prevention:
Starts before pregnancy.
- Regular BP checks:
• Monthly/Every 3 months if BP is normal.
• Daily/ as advised by your Doctor, if hypertensive.
- Take your medication seriously.
- If you’re hypertensive or had PIH and trying to conceive (TTC), speak to your Dr...
Your Doctor will examine and advice if it’s safe for you to get pregnant at the moment. If safe, will give guidance on best practice.
When pregnant;
- Book early.
- Never miss an ANC. Routine tests will be carried out.
- Once you’re diagnosed of hypertension in pregnancy...
Your Doctor will give you pregnancy safe anti hypertensive medication, advice on lifestyle and dietary modifications.
- Work with nutritionists and Dietitians to create a healthy meal plan for you.
The aim is to control your blood pressure, for a safe pregnancy and delivery.
Also, Birthing plans will be discussed. If well controlled, in some cases, a woman may be allowed to push.
However in many cases of hypertension in pregnancy, CS is best advised. To avoid complications like Eclampsia, Fetal death, or cortical blindness.
Speak to your Doctor.
Other methods of prevention:
- Healthy Diets. No smoking and drinking of alcohol.
- Lifestyle: No stress, regular exercise etc
- Any family history of HTN. Start early to get yourself checked out. #KnowYourNumbers.
Pregnancy induced hypertension can reverse after delivery.
In some cases, it may continue to become full blown Hypertension. This can also be well managed.
The key to a safe pregnancy, is early ANC booking and regular hospital appointments.
Report any concerns or new developments to your Dr, in real time. Stay safe.

While herbs are therapeutic, the problem is the lack of regulation, and false sense of safety it provides.
You live recklessly, then fall back on high-dose herbs as a safety net. Risky.
I don’t advocate sugary foods. I just need to let us know that our bodies interprete “sugar differently”. So, yam, fufu, amala, eba... all are sugars. And healthy foods, can be tasty.
Though refined sugars are not so healthy...
Drinking bitters, doesn’t prevent diabetes either.
So a ‘nurse’ told an acquaintance that her diagnosis of ovarian cyst is because she has no sexual experience.
She also advised her to “try and be having sex from time to time”.
Also, told her other scary unverified balderdash.
My first question: “A qualified nurse?”
Silence.
Owing to poverty and ignorance a lot of people seek healthcare in every other place but the hospital.
I understand.
However, “Penny wise... pound foolish”.
It’s best to spend that initial time and money seeking out a specialist. Else, you might spend more in the long run.
I later got to find out that this woman who claims to be a nurse, just owns a chemist shop and once worked as an auxiliary nurse in a private hospital back in the day.
She had initially flooded her with antibiotics from an imaginary PID! Before she finally got a scan diagnosis.

I have questions.
I stressed myself to get NIN from NIMC in 2015, it wasn’t until 2018 I got called for the permanent card.
Guess what. Card expires in 2020.
Sorry, you want me to go through that stress again?
It’s you people’s identity that will expire.
Now yesterday...
I spent half my day at the MTN store waiting time get a sim upgrade, having been busy the whole year.
Just when it got to me... we were told that NCC had stopped the process.
Now, we are hearing we have until 30th December to upgrade our sim with NIN or get blocked.
Block heads.
How is it that in a world were everyone is innovatively progressing, our country is taking huge steps backward.
Why not automate the NIN and SIM upgrade process (Self service!). Why bring people together in a pandemic, during the holidays with a threat hanging above their heads.
