I've got back-to-back stories scheduled today folks, so I cannot live-tweet! Dang! But do watch out for my story on this later and check out the live stream here:
Chairman Raskin's opening statement here.
Peter Simi Chapman Univ: We shouldn't see 1/6 as either new or an aberration. When ppl say we don't do this, I appreciate the sentiment but that sentiment is wrong. As Americans we do this & have a long history of doing this. Pretending otherwise doesn't help us solve the problem
Long day, story submitted and hope to see it published soon!

murphy.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/…
Sponsored by Sens. Chris Murphy & Patty Murray & Reps Don Beyer, Bobby Scott & Donald McEachin, Beyer notes: “The practice of subjecting students to abusive discipline techniques happens far too often, and disproportionately affects Black children and students with disabilities."
"Many states have previously recognized the harm of seclusion & inappropriate restraint in the classroom & banned these practices. This is a nat'l civil rights issue that needs a federal solution," @RepDonBeyer said.

At today's White House press briefing @PressSec Psaki on the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act: "It is exactly the right forum to help rebuild trust in communities."
The White House feels lawmakers are "making progress" on the bill.
Qualified immunity is the wedge issue.
But in back to the reality of gridlock in Washington.
Psaki then acknowledges it is "unlikely" lawmakers will pass something before the anniversary of George Floyd's death. However, there will be a ceremony at the White House next week marking the anniversary.

There was also hesitancy today to pass the final bill by progressive members in the House who questioned whether certain officers might have been complicit in 1/6 attack. It now looks, however, that the bill will pass after some negotiating. More soon.
Reps Jamal Bowman and Rashida Tlaib voted present for today's vote approving $1.9B in Capitol Security funding. Ilhan Omar voting no.
