THREAD: Who is Israel’s next Prime Minister, Naftali Bennett?
Bennett is a far-right ultranationalist who staunchly opposes Palestinian statehood or self-determination of any kind in Palestine/Israel.
In 2020, Defense Minister Bennett ordered a stop to Israeli army-run testing of Palestinian residents for COVID-19 in the Gaza Strip in the midst of the pandemic.
Not a settler himself, from 2010 to 2012 he was head of the main political body (Yesha Council) that represents Israeli settlers living on occupied Palestinian land in violation of international law and is a staunch supporter of Israel’s settlement enterprise.
He has repeatedly stated his opposition to a Palestinian state being created in the occupied territories. Instead, he proposes Israel unilaterally annex the approximately 60% of the Palestinian West Bank that fell under full Israeli control
under the supposedly temporary Oslo Accords, where most Israeli settlements are located.
In 2014, Bennett told journalists Israel “will be gradually attempting to apply Israeli law [annexing] on Israeli controlled areas of Judea and Samaria [the occupied West Bank].”
In 2014, Bennett wrote an oped for the NYT: “For Israel, Two-State Is No Solution,” and in 2013, he told New Yorker magazine: "I will do everything in my power, forever, to fight against a Palestinian state being founded in the Land of Israel."
A few months later, in June, he declared: "The most important thing in the Land of Israel is to build, build, build [settlements]. It's important that there will be an Israeli presence everywhere. Our principal problem is still Israel's leaders'
unwillingness to say in a simple manner that the Land of Israel belongs to the People of Israel."
Bennett also advocates increased Jewish control over the revered Al-Aqsa mosque complex in occupied East Jerusalem, which is the third holiest site in Islam. Extremist messianic Jews want to build a temple where Al-Aqsa mosque is,
which would spark a major religious conflagration in the region and beyond.
In October 2018, Bennett said that if he were defense minister he would order a shoot to kill policy against Palestinians attempting to walk across the boundary between Israel and Gaza, where nearly 2 million people have been trapped under an
illegal Israeli siege and naval blockade for 15 years.
Today, May 15th, marks the anniversary of the Nakba, when Zionist militias ethnically cleansed 750,000 Palestinians from their homes in 1948 in order to create Israel. #Nakba73
But the Nakba did not stop in 1948. In 1967, thousands more Palestinians were forcibly displaced by Israel, considered “absentee” and dispossessed. And so the number of Palestinians ethnically cleansed by Israel grew.
As a result of Israel’s ethnic cleansing, there are over 7 million Palestinians refugees (the expelled & their descendants) worldwide. Though they have the internationally-recognized right of return, Israel refuses to allow them to return home.
1) Israeli airstrikes continue to rain terror down on the 2 million men, women and children of Gaza. Israel’s military escalated its violence by bombing a number of apartment buildings.
2) As of now, 48 Palestinians have been killed, including 14 children, and 300 have been wounded in Gaza.
THREAD: The latest on Israel's assault on Gaza: The Israeli army chief of staff is promising an “indefinite” war. That means one thing: continued death and destruction targeting civilians in Gaza.
Israeli airstrikes have killed at least 26 Palestinians in two days. Nine of the dead are children.
Palestinians from occupied East Jerusalem to Lydd (within Israel) continue to protest Israel’s aggression on Gaza.
Amidst all the headlines and breaking news, it can be confusing to make sense of what’s happening in #Palestine/#Israel right now. Here are 6 things you need to know to understand what’s going on:
1) Israel has been escalating tensions in #Jerusalem for weeks, including placing new restrictions on Palestinians marking Ramadan, the violent suppression of Palestinians protesting evictions of families in #SheikhJarrah by settlers,
and soldiers assaulting worshippers in Al Aqsa Mosque.
THREAD: Last night, Israeli forces terrorized thousands of Palestinian worshipers, unleashing tear gas, rubber-coated steel bullets and stun grenades inside Al Aqsa Mosque. Over 200 Palestinians were injured, including 88 who were hospitalized. One Palestinian lost an eye.
The armed invasion of Muslims’ holiest site in Jerusalem came towards the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month.
Palestinians stayed at Al Aqsa after prayers to protest against Israeli plans to evict Palestinian families from their homes in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood.
