2. Evening of June 1st 2001, a Palestinian suicide bomber , sent by Hamas , had made his way to #TelAviv promenade, approached the “Dolphi” discotheque building while hundreds of young Israelis ,and exploded, carrying out 1 of the most horrific terror massacres in Israeli history
The attack occurred during the beginning of the so called “Second Intifada” ,during which , Palestinian terrorists had indiscriminately targeted Israeli civilians with a deadly suicide bombing occurring pretty much daily.
June 1st 2001 was Friday , the “Dolphi” disco usually opened on Shabbat eve thus catering more to secular Israelis (both Arabs and Jews) and tourists , located in the middle of the Tel Aviv promenade , right near the sea , the disco attracted hundreds of people weekly.
That day it was the so called “Russian night” , when most of the songs were meant to be popular Russian hits , all posters near the discotheque building were in Russian , thus explaining the large amount of young olim from the ex USSR republics that were present there .
Approximately at 23:00\11PM , the Palestinian suicide bomber , armed with a 3kg suicide vest surrounded with metallic shrapnel , bullets and nails had joined the large queue of hundreds of youngsters waiting to enter the discotheque.
The Palestinian suicide bomber was 22, from Qalqilya, he served in the Jordanian army and entered the #WestBank several months before, specifically and in the sole purpose of carrying out a terrorist attack against Israelis.
He was arrested by the Palestinian Authority for 12 days after his close friend and roommate carried out a suicide bombing at a gas station in Kfar Saba, in which two boys were murdered and four were injured. But out of “lack of evidence” he was released.
Approximate at 23:30\11:30 PM , the terrorist , which already had hundreds of people around him , as he was already nearing the entrance to the building , detonated his suicide vest .
All hell broke loose.
Anna Kortnikov , 16 at the time , was moderately wounded :”I was with my friends at the line to the disco , the music was very loud and we had to speak loudly to hear each other. All of the sudden I saw a bright light I felt like was flying and lost consciousness…”
… I woke up , it took me a moment to understand that I was lying facing down to the pavement , somebody called “Anya, wake up , Anya” , but I couldn’t move. My friends Ilya and Masha rolled me over and helped me to get up , everyone were dead around us”
Sergei Savelchenko, 17 at the time , which was lightly wounded : “Me and 2 of my friends were standing in the line to the disco , all of the sudden there was a terrible explosion. I was thrown to the ground and hit my head on the pavement…
…There was a foul stench of smoke and blood which made me sick. I started getting up and saw dozens of people lying on the ground , some of them limbless , on fire, bloodied. I saw that 1 of my friends, Lyosha Lopalo , was lying on his stomach…
… I got near him and called him “Lyoshenka, brother , come, we need to go” I lifted him up by his shoulder and saw that his whole face was covered in blood , there was a huge puddle of it underneath him. I began yelling and cried . It all felt like a nightmare.”
A woman who was driving her car near the attack site will recall :”I was driving my car with my friend, I saw a huge crowd of people at “Dolphi” and thought to myself “Wow wonder what’s going on there?” just as we got closer an explosion occurred in the middle the crowd …”
… It was so strong that i felt it in the drivers seat , I stopped the car and instinctively ran towards the wounded people. I couldn’t comprehend what I saw there . Scores of youngsters lying on the ground bloodied , some disfigured and missing limbs . I fell like passing out …
… I saw 3 bloodied girls , I told them come with me , “I’m taking you to the hospital” I said , I drove like hell to Wolfson . They were not talking to us, just sat there and gazed at nothing .
I asked them “Girls are you okay , do you feel pain ? They were silent
When we got to the parking entrance I yelled at the security guard “Let us through I have wounded from the attack on the promenade” . I took them to the ER and paramedics took them from the vehicle. I hope they are ok״
17 civilians were murdered instantly , 4 of those critically wounded had passed away from their injuries in the next couple of days.
All of the victims , except 2 , were new olim from countries of the ex Soviet Union. 12 of the victims were underage. At least 150 were wounded.

Most of the victims were friends , there were 2 sisters that murdered in the attack (Yelina and Yulia Nelimov)
Ambulances from southern and northern #Israel had to be called upon to transport the large amount of injuries. Eyewitnesses tell that first responders , including paramedics , police and border control forces had to be themselves treated for shock , some passed out .
A paramedic told Israeli media : “I arrived to the scene and immediately started CPR on number of people, all were unsuccessful. 1 girl that I attempted to help was holding me with her hands , she said “Mama” and in a couple of minutes I lost her.”
Another first responder told Israel media :”I approached a beautiful young girl with blond hair and blue eyes open wide. I thought she was just in shock but when I approached her she was cold. The I saw that she had a large puddle of blood underneath her. She was already dead.”

Just before the explosion, Diaz managed to call his girlfriend's cell phone and tell her, "Look behind you, I love you." Natalie turned around, surprised, but Diaz was not with her. Moments after , the terrorist blew himself up in the crowd
Diaz, 21 years old when he was murdered, was laid to rest on June 6, 2001 in the military cemetery in Kiryat Shaul. He left parents, brother and sister. After his fall he was promoted to the rank of corporal.
