⁦Enormously significant judgement for feminism and free speech today in ⁦@MForstater⁩ case. Women who believe sex is real and question gender identity beliefs are protected under the Equality Act. Well done everybody who supported #istandwithmaya
As someone who as been maligned and misrepresented simply for stating sex is real, I am enormously relieved by this judgement not just for @MForstater but for thousands of women who have been cancelled for expressing an opinion, however respectfully.
It’s now for those people in positions of power to think carefully about their failure to stand up to intolerance - or why they stood by when women were attacked and misrepresented by online mobs - some, sadly, whipped up by publicly funded organisations and public figures
My activity in this area was through the work of my parliamentary committee examining how sex was defined in the census - I also FACILITATED DEBATE by holding meetings in parliament to discuss sex and gender - for this I was subject to unacceptable abuse & false accusations
The meetings I helped facilitate included transsexuals on the erosion of their rights by sex self ID, doctors on the evidence base of transitioning young people, human rights lawyers & people working with abused women + feminist academics and activists . None were bigots
I am so grateful to @MForstater for her bravery and I hope the “institutional capture” she refers to will be addressed. Women have rights under the law to single sex spaces and services. Now they are able to defend those legal rights without being threatened and intimidated.

On the last day of this @ScotParl I’d like to thank the hard working clerks on the @SP_European which I have had the honour to convene since 2016. Our legacy report gives an idea of the breadth of work we do sp-bpr-en-prod-cdnep.azureedge.net/published/CTEE…
I am really proud of the @SP_European work conducted across a wide remit covering Culture, Tourism, Europe and External Affairs. #Brexit hit us almost immediately and we got to work producing reports and commissioning research. parliament.scot/parliamentaryb…
Our enquiry work includes Making Scotland A Screen Leader which examined the opportunities from streaming, the importance of a film studio and training, a strong expert screen agency as well as PSB commissioning parliament.scot/S5_European/Re…

On #internationalwomensday2021 I think of the 23 million girls since 1970 who were not born due to sex selective abortion #sexmatters
On #internationalwomensday2021 I think of the 60 million to 100 million women who should be alive today but are missing, presumed dead, because of male violence. #sexmatters
On #internationalwomensday2021 I think of the exhausted women who work two out of three of all labour hours worldwide, but earn just 10 per cent of the world’s income #sexmatters

New research commissioned by @scotgov says people with learning disabilities are three times more likely to die from #COVID19 than the general population. They released the information to parliament in a reply to my written question today 👇
I first began asking for this information last summer and it was due in the Autumn of 2020. The results of the work by The Scottish Learning Disability Observatory @UofGlasgow show significantly increased mortality rates compared to the general population
People with a learning disability were also twice as likely to catch #COVID19 and also twice as likely to experience severe illness as a result. The research was first wave when few people were tested.

Oliver Mundell’s resignation tonight from the Scottish Tory front bench over the @ScotParl vote for anti #COVID-19 travel restrictions is an opportunistic and dangerous piece of politicking which could put lives at risk.
The travel ban is to PROTECT people, by stopping folk bringing virus from high to low prevalence areas - whether Glasgow in level 4 or England in lockdown - Cumbria on the border with Dumfriesshire has high rates see here newsandstar.co.uk/news/18879534.…
Exceptions to the travel ban mean people in Dumfriesshire can still make journeys to England (or other parts of Scotland) for many reasons eg work, essential shopping, care for the vulnerable, hospital and more - see some of the exceptions here 👇

We live in such a polarised world that I doubt the people who signed this had an opportunity to actually hear alternative arguments from the very many survivors who support the @nordicmodelnow such as @RachelRMoran
It would be good if they had the opportunity to hear of the harm caused to abused women with little economic power in places where there is state sanctioned commercial sexual exploitation as @bindelj has written powerfully here google.com/amp/s/amp.theg…
Those who campaign for the decriminalisation of commercial sexual exploitation need to know that in practise it means the state giving a thumbs up to pimps. Everywhere this has happened it has led to MORE prostitution, violence and trafficking see here feministcurrent.com/2015/10/20/chr…

Very important statement @ScotParl today from @RichardLochhead on future of @EUErasmusPlus and @EU_H2020 in Scotland post Brexit
The concerns he outlined today were similar to those revealed in the extensive enquiry by @SP_European into @EUErasmusPlus - you can read more about our report here
Shockingly despite the best efforts of @scotgov and @RichardLochhead the UK Treasury refuses to commit post Brexit to Erasmus+ which brought in €90 mill from 2014-19. Scotland punches above its weight and secures more Erasmus funds than other UK nations
