Say what?

“I never discussed the leak cases with Trump. He didn’t really ask me any of the specifics.”

former Attorney General Bill Barr to Politico

So it was just generalities, then?

@dlippman @AndrewDesiderio @woodruffbets report

politico.com/news/2021/06/1…
2. Trying to make sense of this line given NYT's detailed reporting👇

Sounds like Barr may just be denying the records were sought under his watch.

And that Barr is not denying his knowledge the records had been sought under Sessions (and that Barr's DOJ maintained gag order).
3. Also looking back at the Times report and Barr's statements to Politico.

Barr doesn't deny he oversaw investigations of the members of Congress, and indeed revivified them.
4. Did Barr need Trump to specifically and confidentially encourage the attorney general to investigate Adam Schiff?

Of course not.

Trump shouted it from the rooftops in tweets and a news conference.

@ThePlumLineGS has the receipts.

When Israel bombed apartment tower, two scholars wrote: laws of war permit such strikes.

Their (and the IDF's) view of the law is an outlier/minority.

It would support bombing a mosque if enemy put a single military landline inside.

The correct view👇

2. I should spell out what I mean by the majority and minority view, which is about the pure question of law (#IHL). Not how it cashes out in this specific strike.

Here's the majority view.👇

@ICRC report on the left; @ILA_official report on the right. ImageImage
3. In short: Targeting such dual-use structures must include the civilian parts of the structure (eg the civilian apartments) in the proportionality analysis.

Note both the ICRC and ILA reports cite to US military manuals in support of the majority view.

Thank you @SenBillCassidy (R-La).

He has said he’s inclined to support a #Jan6Commission.

Cassidy now agrees with Collins:

"I know it's going to take a little bit of evolution…we could address concerns and make it a lot easier for folks to support it.”

2. Senator Cassidy on his historic vote to convict President Trump in Senate impeachment trial.

“Our Constitution and our country is more important than any one person. I voted to convict President Trump because he is guilty.”

#CountryOverParty

With news that a bipartisan 1/6 Commission may be in the works...

I wrote this👇(with @AREvers @justinhendrix).

1. Biden admin is *NOT* providing info to Congress.

2. We explain how legislation for the Commission can fix such problems.

washingtonpost.com/outlook/2021/0…
On Weds, Chair of @OversightDems @RepMaloney
called out Biden Justice Dept on 1/6 investigation:

"Neither DOJ nor the FBI have produced a single piece of paper in response to the requests sent by six House Committees, including this one, in March. Not a single piece of paper."
Meanwhile...

House @HomelandDems @HomelandGOP Chair @BennieGThompson and Ranking Member @RepJohnKatko are trying to forge bipartisan agreement to set up a 1/6 Commission.

@LeaderHoyer characterized the discussions as "productive."

In advance of Congressional hearing with former acting Defense Secretary Chris Miller (finally!), @K8brannen and I prepared a Timeline.

👉Shows gross omissions in DoD's public timeline.

👉Points to a COVER UP (see especially critical 2:22pm phone call)

justsecurity.org/76117/the-offi…
2. DoD public timeline omits nature of explosive phone call in which senior Army officials rebuffed Capitol Police chief's plea for help.

Also, was acting Army Sec McCarthy on the call?

DoD and Lt. Gen. Piatt suggest he was; McCarthy (and commander Walker) say he was not.
3. Army first denied (strenuously and repeatedly) that Lt General Charles Flynn was on the call. Army and Flynn later admit he was on the call.

Two big developments to think about together:

👉 Facebook @OversightBoard upholding Trump suspension

👉 NEW: Biden admin joining #ChristchurchCall to address violent extremist content

#Christchurch @GIFCT_official @techvsterrorism @francediplo_EN @GNET_research

<thread>
2. The Biden action is a significant turn away from Trump-era policy.

In March 2019, a #WhiteSupremacist terrorist live streamed his massacre of people at two mosques in New Zealand.

These dozens of democracies 👇 joined the call to action.

The Trump administration refused.
3. Both the FB Oversight Board and Biden Christchurch actions are based on #HumanRights law framing the decision.

On one hand: Freedom of expression (and right to receive information).

On other hand: Public safety, equality, non-discrimination, other rights (eg voting rights).

Washington Post scoop:

FBI gave #RonJohnson defensive briefing in 2020 warning he was being targeted by Russia to spread disinformation on Biden.

What did he do?

He considered it “completely useless and unnecessary”

With his usual paranoia, he thought FBI briefing was a trick
2. And then, worse of all, Johnson continued to use his office to act as a conduit for the Russian disinformation campaign to interfere in the 2020 presidential election.

As @AshaRangappa_ and I detailed at length here.👇

3. Here’s the Washington Post report.

The headline is about Giuliani,
But lots of details about FBI’s warning Senator Johnson.
