This problem is not going to go away, not least because there is the *other side to it* - what happens when these fans return home from #EURO2020 - as #DeltaVariant continues to grow in 🇬🇧

Short 🧵
A few caveats first:
- this is based on current advice, or advice known for July if available. Is hence subject to change
- whether fans travelling for matches is a good idea is a different debate, don't @ - reply me on that
- this is about travel and politics, not ⚽️ per se
Data on cases in the UK - currently at 75 per 100000 inhabitants - can be found here: coronavirus.data.gov.uk/details/cases

33360 cases of the Delta Variant in a week
theguardian.com/world/live/202…

Harries: "Cases are rising rapidly across the country and the Delta variant is now dominant."
So imagine a national team has qualified for the semi finals (6, 7 July) or final (11 July), all to be played at Wembley 🇬🇧

If what Winter writes is correct, fans can get *to* 🇬🇧, but what happens when they return home?
I've examined 🇫🇷🇩🇪🇧🇪🇳🇱🇪🇸🇮🇹🇵🇹 - the 7 favourites to win the tournament according to Oddschecker (🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 is in the top 8 as well, but does not need examining in this thread by definition)
🇩🇪

🇬🇧 is considered a "Virusvariantengebiet" by RKI
rki.de/DE/Content/Inf…

This means 14 day obligatory quarantine for anyone returning to 🇩🇪 from 🇬🇧. Even a negative PCR test can't free you from this early
🇫🇷

Those fully vaccinated do not have to go into quarantine. Those not vaccinated do have to quarantine for 7 days, even if the obligatory test upon entry from 🇬🇧 is negative diplomatie.gouv.fr/fr/conseils-au…
🇧🇪

2 tests, and compulsory quarantine upon return from 🇬🇧 - although I find contradictory information about whether it is 7 or 10 days in length
info-coronavirus.be/fr/voyages/
🇳🇱

Bit harder to work this out. Combination of this nederlandwereldwijd.nl/landen/verenig… and this reizentijdenscorona.rijksoverheid.nl/en/verenigd-ko… says quarantine might be required, but it is not clear
🇮🇹

No compulsory quarantine for those returning from 🇬🇧 salute.gov.it/portale/nuovoc…
🇪🇸

At the moment 🇬🇧 not considered a risk country, so no quarantine - latest PDF linked here: mscbs.gob.es/en/profesional…
🇵🇹

Again not a simple one, but I *think* quarantine is not required, at least according to this cached page webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache…
I can see only two options here, really...

At least in 🇫🇷🇧🇪🇩🇪, and possibly the others too if the 🇬🇧 situation worsens, fans are going to be strongly urged not to travel

Or UEFA is going to have to switch the venue

/ends
P.S. Other tweeps helped me understand:
🇳🇱 mandatory 10 day quarantine (tougher than I thought)

🇵🇹 no quarantine
P.P.S. More detail about 🇧🇪 - if the second test during quarantine (at 7 day mark) is negative you can then leave quarantine...

Right

So my Berlin-Belgrade 🚆🚌 trip is ON! 🎉

Berlin-Vienna-Budapest 🚆 booked (sleeping car)
Budapest-Berlin 🚆 booked (seat, overnight)

But what about the other bits?
Budapest-Kelebia-Subotica

There is 1 direct train a day

I can book it as far as Kelebia on the MÁV website, but I assume just going to the ticket office at Keleti and buying to Budapest-Subotica is easiest

@simonschre @seatsixtyone do you know?
Subotica-Novi Sad

More trains here, prices online from Srbija Voz

Easiest to just buy this on the spot in Subotica I assume @Fabian_24trains?

If you're one of those people whining at me "I'm not going to sit 4 hours on a train, I'll fly 1 hour instead", then listen up

A worked example, for Berlin-München

From where I used to live at Yorckstrasse, Berlin, to when my old friend @ronpatz used to work at Uni München

🧵
Buses have been eliminated here - these are just train/S-Bahn/U-Bahn options

My fastest connection is 4 hours 35 mins

3 hours 56 mins of that is on one direct train, that has wifi and a restaurant on board
If I don't manage to get one of the extra fast "Sprinter" ICEs, I have a regular ICE that makes more stops at other times of the day, and at least 1 train per hour - trip time is slightly longer 4 hours 55 mins, of which 4 hours 23 is in the ICE

Building on this one... I am going to analyse each of the German political parties' current slogans based on this

Maybe I am just numbed by bad slogans in German political communication by now?

Detail in the 🧵
CDU
Alles, was wir tun, tun wir #wegenmorgen.

Everything we are doing we're doing because of tomorrow.

Opposite:
Everything we are doing we're doing because of yesterday.

Parties based on nostalgia do work, so this passes, just.

(From cdu.de )
CSU
Die Ordnung.

The order.

Opposite:
The disorder.

Makes no sense. Fail.

(from their basic program: csu-grundsatzprogramm.de - main CSU site has no slogan)

Today I embark on a new bicycle tour project… #GrenzeBerlinOst

This is a sort of counterpart of the well known Berliner #Mauerweg I recently finished - a cycle path that encircles the old West Berlin berlin.de/mauer/en/wall-…
My #GrenzeBerlinOst route follows the border between what was East Berlin and the neighbouring state of Brandenburg

I doubt anyone has tried to cycle this, and it’s definitely not signposted!
I’ve mapped the route in 6 stages on Komoot here: komoot.com/user/189774755…

🚨 Try these at your peril at the moment - I’ve not done them yet! 🚨

I’ll update the maps once I’ve done them

So, for anyone nuts enough to try, I now think I know how to do Berlin-Belgrade by 🚅, during the easing of COVID restrictions...

Good news: you can do it for €48,19 single when I need to go (not a typo!) but if you want a bed in the night train it gets horribly costly!

🧵
The CHEAP but not very comfortable route

Berlin-Budapest overnight train, but in a seat (no sleeping car because of COVID)
Then Budapest-Subotica-Novi Sad by train
Novi Sad-Belgrade by bus

Trip time: 27hrs
€48,19 single Image
The COMFORTABLE but expensive route

Berlin-Vienna by NightJet, single compartment sleeping car
Then Vienna-Budapest-Subotica-Novi Sad by train
Novi Sad-Belgrade by bus

Trip time: 27hrs
€238,09 single Image

A client in Belgrade 🇷🇸 is pushing me to actually attend their event in person at the end of June...

I'll write about the whole effort to book this at some point, but just one part is so ridiculous it deserves a 🧵 of its own

Why railways can't fix this is 🤯
The part of the trip here uniquely concerns the Kraków Główny 🇵🇱 - Budapest Keleti 🇭🇺 night train - EN 407 / 477

(Tangent: yes, I know this isn't the most logical train to take, but I have to, as other viable services aren't running)

Here's the connection from DB's website
Does it have a sleeping car?

At the moment, due to COVID, where DB lists sleeping cars as running is not always accurate, but Vagonweb thinks it does
