2. I recently learned that in 2016/17 NIAID, along with Scripps & Dartmouth institutions, put in patent applications for the prefusion spike protein technology that is used in BioNTechPfizer, Moderna and other Sars-CoV-2 vaccines under development.

3. A statement is surprising:
"Currently, there are no effective prophylactic or therapeutic measures [i.e SARS, MERS], and because other CoVs are poised to emerge as new human pathogens, there is a need to define a general CoV vaccine solution."

4. NIAID's invention described as "platform technology" of use in many spike protein solutions. Inventor (Barney Graham NIAID) through NIH worked with Moderna to develop their vaccine. BioNTech/Pfizer adopted this full spike protein prefusion structure

6. So, in one speculative framing of this situation it would make sense that NIAID would restart Gain of Function funding in December 2017, as they had the solution ready to go. They just needed someone else, preferably an adversary, to start a CoV pandemic that needed a vaccine!
