Summer Solstice.
An opportune time to restate the case.
We face a double catastrophe; #climatechange and #ecologicalcrisis
Whilst the ecological crisis can be at least partially reversed, given the right conditions, the climate crisis cannot. 1/
With more and more co2 and other gigs being released, we are accelerating towards a planet AT LEAST 2°C warmer than at present. It's unlikely to happen in a smooth, linear fashion, some years a little cooler, followed by big jumps in temperature. 2/
We'll hit some tipping points, which may take us way higher than 2°C of warming.
None of this is good for the other species we share our planet with. The ecological crisis will deepen.
Given we know these things 3/
...we should be taking coordinated global action right now.
I could list the top 10 (20, 30...) courses of action we should take, but the root of the problem has to be pulled out first. 4/
That root is an economic system which puts growth, profit and "what's best for me" front and centre.
We need instead an economic system which puts sustainability, resilience and "what's best for everyone" front and centre. 5/
That long list of actions should then flow naturally.
So how do we achieve that change?
This is really tough to say, but I think itsalmost impossible.
Nevertheless, I'm not about to give up. 6/
First, while it's possible to act on the international stage as individuals (eg Greta Thunberg) or organisations, it's a little easier to act on a national level.
So, in the UK, my understanding is this; the Tories won't change the system. They tinker at the edges 7/
...of climate and ecology, but the mindset is still firmly in the growth, profit, extractivist, exploitative "what's best for me" mode. In my opinion, they can't change.
This means we have to #GTTO
How can we do this, when they seem to have such a stranglehold on our nation? 8/
The only way - the ONLY way - is for the other parties to work together in a #DemocraticAlliance or we might want to call it a #ClimateAlliance
If we make this work, and win the next GE, we'll find ourselves in government with other people who don't want to change the system. 9/
This is what feeds the pessimistic side of my thinking. Neither Labour nor LibDems have any analysis that sees our current economic system as the problem.
Our job, then, is to grow our current followers, to put forward our arguments, to bring to bear 10/
...as much pressure as possible so we CAN make a start on changing the system.
I return to the start of my argument. Once #climatechange happens, it's irreversible. It'll be almost unserviceable.
We can't let that happen.
We MUST act.

@GeorgeMonbiot In these circumstances, we the people have almost no power. Our anger mounts with each #corruption and every #incompetence, our grief swells with the disastrous death toll - but we feel impotent to do anything. This is our #democracy at work.
@GeorgeMonbiot There are examples around the world of good practice in beating the virus, but our *government* fails to follow this good practice. Their failure leads to the tragic, catastrophic loss of life; to the overwhelming of the NHS, already seriously underfunded...
@GeorgeMonbiot ... through the last decade; and to the trashing of livelihoods already under the gravest of stresses from a reckless Brexit. The economy is in freewill.
It feels as if the choices our *leaders* make wilfully ignore the good practice of other nations. In these circumstances...

Can we stop and think about the violence in London (and in Sheffield) today.
While I agree it's far from acceptable, we may also want to delve a bit deeper.
And of course, I may be entirely wrong, and the violence may indeed be violence for violence' sake from a bunch of (mainly) men for who violence is first choice of means of expression. (If so, there's a whole bunch of psychological unpacking to do there, too). 2/
Many have noted these men may well be from the same cohort that voted Brexit, as one of the very rare opportunities they have of hurting the establishment. (Hint - it doesn't, far from it, if JRM is anything to go by.) 3/
