Narratives are made up of stories that hang together and shape how a community thinks about an issue or group of people. I am looking for models of narrative change that have been used to replace pervasive harmful ones. Here is my list so far. What would you add?#narrativepower
Build capacity of orgs to tell stories by providing resources or training. Can be done one time for a campaign or ongoing. Orgs led by people most affected by the issue working for systems change must be partners @_Narrative & @Participant do this well! So do we @RealGoodCenter
Strategically use protest and events to shape story and media coverage. Thinking of @owasow on 1960s protest and agenda seeding and @DrAlliRich work on embodied discourse.
Social impact entertainment and arts campaigns can be used to bring people together in ways that bring them joy. Use convening as an opportunity to build and disseminate new narratives. Thinking of the work of @ExposureLabs@SkollCenterSIE@LearCenter
Practice deep canvassing or create space for empathetic conversations among different communities to replace existing pervasive narratives in people’s minds about others.
Organize communities to advocate for new narratives, or through civic engagement become champions for new narratives. @hahriehan does incredible research on this. @DefineAmerican@ColorOfChange Do this really well.
Spread narratives through networks. When people see others they trust share personal stories or stories important to them, it creates a norm/safe to do and others will do as well. Check out the work @foucaultwelles@ryanjgallag@sjjphd@DamonCentola
Narrative change practitioners to follow: Shanelle Matthews, Bridgette Antionette Evans, Rashad Robinson, Rinku Sen, Rachel Weidinger, Samantha Wright, Chelsea Fuller, Lauren Parater. @PopCollab@ColorOfChange@_Narrative@ReFrameMentor. Who would you add?
Adding a few more:
- Changes to stories funded and shared in different culture making institutions: journalism, entertainment, academia, social change sector (nonprofits, humanitarian, etc), politics.
-Bolstering narrative networks- coalitions of orgs working collaboratively

How do you build story-based advocacy campaigns that can have real impact? My friends @samleewright, @msteinman, @aechristiano & I pulled together what we know from social impact entertainment campaigns & the science of social change in this four part series with @SSIR.
Storytelling is the most powerful tool we have, but only when crafted and deployed in the right ways. We offer a model for building campaigns and highlight three critical roles: funder, storyteller and strategist. #narrativepowerssir.org/articles/entry…
You are in on stories, but which stories should you tell? We share strategies for building or choosing transformative, counternarratives that can bring people together on divisive issues. #storytellingssir.org/articles/entry…
At @RealGoodCenter, we’re thinking a lot about strategies to increase confidence in #covid vaccines. We’re talking with lots of brilliant scholars, and want to share the best of what we’ve learned. Check out these evidence-based insights you can start applying right now.
Many people are hesitant to get vaccinated because they’re anxious about side effects or needles. Social Psychologist Jennifer Howell at UCMerced says we should increase people’s coping strategies to overcome this.
Help people make a plan and think through all the steps of getting vaccinated. Remind them that they've experienced flu symptoms or been vaccinated before, and it was ok. journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.117…
