not really lua's fault, it has no notion of when's a "good time" to collect garbage and doesn't know that there's a set time when a game is twiddling its thumbs

hm, well, now there's no perceivable difference if i remove that. naturally. i love too test perf
and now the entire game runs twice as fast with no changes at all, but then i restarted it and that went away
