OK, all previous tweets about UK COVID QR codes and 🇩🇪🇫🇷🇮🇪 apps *deleted*, because this situation is so very messy... and I am going to try to set the record straight in this thread instead

This stuff is important, and understanding it is complex, so bear with me

🧵
This applies to people vaccinated by the NHS in 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 and 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 only. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 and Northern Ireland do not issue QR codes to those vaccinated, so this is not applicable to them

It applies to those people travelling 🇬🇧 to 🇪🇺 & 🇨🇭, and NOT to people travelling to 🇬🇧
Scan NHS 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 vaccination cert QR with:

🇩🇪 Corona-Warn-App
🤖 play.google.com/store/apps/det…
iOS apps.apple.com/de/app/corona-…

🇮🇪 COVID Tracker Ireland
🤖 play.google.com/store/apps/det…
iOS apps.apple.com/de/app/covid-t…

🇫🇷 TousAntiCovid
🤖 play.google.com/store/apps/det…
iOS apps.apple.com/us/app/tousant…

it IMPORTS
... and it all looks like everything is fine.

* BUT *

The EU Digital COVID Certificate also - sensibly - has a verification system
There are 2 apps I've found to check whether a EU Digital COVID Certificate is valid or not

🇩🇪 CovPass Check
🤖 play.google.com/store/apps/det…
iOS apps.apple.com/de/app/covpass…

🇫🇷 TousAntiCovid Verif
🤖 play.google.com/store/apps/det…
iOS apps.apple.com/fr/app/tousant…
So ⚠️ THIS IS THE IMPORTANT PART ⚠️

Only if your certificate in 🇩🇪 Corona-Warn-App / 🇮🇪 COVID Tracker Ireland / 🇫🇷 TousAntiCovid

verifies with

🇩🇪 CovPass Check / 🇫🇷 TousAntiCovid Verif

is it valid
Now, you may say, why do apps allow the import of certificates without that check being in place from the start?

There are reasons for that:

Also thanks @jwildeboer @i_x_s @timohetzel for help understanding this part!
So the principle is clear enough...

Import in one app, verify in another

But what about the actual *PRACTICE*?
I've just scanned my partner's EU Digital COVID Certificate... and it PASSES ✅ with 🇫🇷 TousAntiCovid Verif and FAILS ❌ with 🇩🇪 CovPass Check...

Which is pretty 🤪 and I don't know how that is possible
If you got a NHS 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 issued QR code, imported into another app, to then verify with one of the verification apps *please tell me in a reply to this tweet*

Or likewise if it fails, reply as well
The crux of it: all of this might in the end work, somehow

But it is an absolute mess

The easiest would of course be if the 🇬🇧 Government just joined the EU Digital COVID Certificate scheme. Technically simple, politically impossible...

/ends
P.S. Seems 🇩🇪 CovPass Check is restricted to German app stores

But the 🇵🇹 Passe Covid (that has the same sort of function) is not restricted - thanks @GatoJuno!

🤖 play.google.com/store/apps/det…
iOS apps.apple.com/lu/app/passe-c…
P.P.S. Seems there are all sorts of part restrictions for the apps here (and in some weird combinations)

The crux of it: the 🇫🇷 TousAntiCovid Verif app is available for all AFAIK, so use that as your verify app if others fail!

All this mapping Eiffel Towers leads you to discover strange towers in strange places...

And Serbia 🇷🇸 has an Eiffel Tower strip, south east of Belgrade and north of Kragujevac

There are towers in:
Lozovik
Velika Plana
Markovac

🧵
Why are there Eiffel Towers in this area of Serbia you might ask?

Because lots of people from there went to work in France, or had a connection to France, as this story of the Markovac tower builder explains 👇
blic.rs/vesti/srbija/a…
"I worked in Paris in paris in the 1970s as a car mechanic. It wasn't so bad, but I didn't even like it too much. I returned home and made the Eiffel Tower as a memory" says Milutin Damjanović who built it

OK, so I think I am done for now

2 more Eiffel Towers (in 🇳🇱, 🇦🇹) added to @Geoguessr map - so now 116 towers in 49 countries there 👇
geoguessr.com/maps/60451069a…

But there are 75 towers I cannot find in Google Street View!

So 191 replicas total!

More detail in 🧵
All the details of the towers are in this blog post 👇
jonworth.eu/the-weird-and-…

As well as the 116 towers I have been able to find, there are 75 more whether either the location is not known, or it is and there is nothing on Google Street View
In some places this is due to Street View being outdated, or towers having been built very recently

In other places it's because the tower cannot be seen from the road and there is no Google Photo Sphere close by

So rail nerds @TrainTracksEU @Koelschlenny @vorortanleiter @AndyBTravels @seatsixtyone @AnnaDeparnay @PaliparanDotCom @LenaDonat - let's plan @AdinaValean and @MarianMarinescu a nice rail route Bruxelles-Bucharest arriving latest morning of 17 Sept un Bucuresti Nord!
Perfect! Here we go...

Just 2 changes (in Vienna and Budapest), and time for a coffee with @lgewessler @MartinSelmayr at Wien Hbf en route!

Trip time 35 hrs 58 mins...

Now how best to book that? 🤔
OK, so we can book Bruxelles Midi - Wien Hbf - Budapest Keleti with ÖBB, €219,80 in a single compartment in the NightJet and a regular seat in the RailJet for the last bit...

The CDU's candidate for Chancellor, @ArminLaschet, is still Ministerpräsident of Nordrhein-Westfalen

Nordrhein-Westfalen has seen the worst flooding in decades in the past 48 hours

What has Laschet said and done?

Pretty much nothing 🤷‍♂️

There are many things I don’t understand about railways in France

One is how they name their stations

Some examples in the 🧵
Chambéry station - an important regional junction - is called

Chambéry-Challes-les-Eaux

Because there’s a bit of town (NOT the bit where the station is!) called that. 🤷‍♂️
Aix-les-Bains

Station is called Aix-les-Bains-le-Revard because of course you need to add the name of the hills next to town to your station name 🤷‍♂️

For some time I have been annoyed there is no discernible strategy for 🇪🇺-wide cross border rail
jonworth.eu/long-distance-…

I am not sure I have all the answers yet... but I think I am starting to get there

Short 🧵
First, an idea I first floated on my blog - that the EU ought to procure a pool of night trains - I have now developed into the @TrainsForEurope campaign

Original blog post from September 2020 👇

Second, timetable and ticketing data remains a mess (and the Rail Passenger Rights Regulation has not improved matters)

How do you solve this one? With some better open data standards
