This deep dive is for anyone interested in the unfolding #Ethiopia Security Crisis the #Tigray War and the information warfare associated with it. Full spectrum analysis.
The final thesis provides an interesting explanation for the hard to explain U.S. position in relation to this #HornOfAfrica Crisis.
I.E. the US is just opposed to having independent free countries in such an important geo-strategic location.
The way @EugenePuryear lays out of the history, detail and context of this crisis leaves me with an uneasy feeling of déjà vu. There are echoes of the lead up to previous international relations castastrophes, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Syria.
Have we not learned anything?
This will become a watershed broadcast IMO with respect to U.S. domestic political understanding of this conflict. And in that respect it does what the best news media should do, shines light into a dark place.
The title of the report is a reference to Noam Chomsky's book, manufacturing consent, and taps into a deep well of anti-war and anti-imperialism activism, writing and journalism.
The author the report is NYC based @stesfa Exec. Director of @newafricainst (both worth a follow).
This interests me because the sort of forensic analysis described in the report. Checking who the author is etc. is the sort of thing I have been doing routinely in relation to all reports related to this conflict, as it has red-flags all over it from an information perspective.
Anyway, as Rania and Eugene point out. The @DFRLab report authored by @awildknight does suggest that @stesfa struck a nerve with his work.
Perhaps @AtlanticCouncil might like to task its @DFRLab experts to have a close look at the disinformation itself, rather than the author.
Irony in this runs way too deep.
Fact checking unit funded by a foreign policy think tank, critiques a fact checking report and concludes @Stesfa's report "works to promote Eritrea and its interests, using the tropes of a fact-checking.."
It's hard to get one's head around.

Image: Typhoon INFA over China showing the lights of Tokyo where the world is gathered to celebrate youth & excellence and the unity of the nations of the world at the Olympics.
Here we see Japan again and tropical storm #Nepartak which is on route towards the Olympics.
#Nepartak is a child of #INFA's gyre and you can see an atmospheric river coming from #INFA's outflows which leads directly to her.
This weekly thread is the sequel to the daily threads published April-July in solidarity with the efforts to complete the 2nd filling of the #GERD dam under difficult circumstances.
There hasn't been a clear view of the #GERD in the past week sadly, just a glimpse.
The crowd showed pictures of the BBC's @robindbrant who was one of the first Western reporters on the ground covering the floods. Brant arrived in Zhengzhou the day after the floods on July 21st.
Translation: In the middle of the night in Zhengzhou, several extended trailers pulled out the remains of the dead from the Jingguang Road Tunnel, flooded on July 20.
Water reached 13m deep in the 4km road tunnel. It took 4 days to pump it out.
This animation shows 24 hours in the life of three storms in the West Pacific. The remnants of former Typhoon #Cempaka bottom left, Typhoon #INFA in the middle and TS #Nepartak far right which is headed to Japan.
Shangai is already receiving rain from In-fa, 650kms away.
A truly extraordinary storm. Maybe illustrative of what tropical storms of the future may look like.
#INFA developed slowly, moves slowly and is not particularly strong, but he/she is orchestrating rain catastrophes from 100s of KMs away in Shangai the Phillipines and Japan.
A big high resolution photo of INFA from this morning from @NASA WorldView. This is a truly huge storm.
. @SecBlinken, @JosepBorrellF, you insisted Ethiopia pursue a path of peace in Tigray to enable humanitarian assistance to to millions experiencing famine.
The TPLF rejected a ceasefire and continues its offensive against the legally recognised Govt.
In recent days TPLF mounted attacks across the border into Afar Region, reportedly killing locals and allegedly using child soldiers as part of their army. These statements from @reda_getachew are very clear, he claims he is fighting and winning a war.
