If you’re requiring oxygen because of an infection with COVID then your lungs are DAMAGED. The MORE oxygen required, the MORE damage to the lungs. 🫁
Those lungs of the child in the CT scan will NEVER be the same again. Tragic.
When the lungs are completely damaged and can’t oxygenate the blood then patients are placed on ECMO, which uses a machine to oxygenate the blood. This allows the lungs to hopefully recover. If the damaged lungs don’t recover then lung transplant is the next option.
Patients must meet certain criteria to be candidates for ECMO.
ECMO isn’t available at every hospital. The latest figures show that 264 U.S. hospitals out of more than 6,000 in the country have the ability to perform ECMO
Escalation steps in hypoxemic covid patients (simplified):
1. Nasal Cannula
2. Hi flow oxygen therapy
3. Non-invasive ventilation
4. Invasive ventilation (breathing machine)
5. ECMO (if a candidate)
6. Lung Transplant
This is based on a conversation w/ a person w/COVID who didn’t want to go the hospital b/c they didn’t want to be put on a breathing machine. I explained there are multiple steps b4 being placed on a ventilator. The earlier you’re treated in your illness, the better the outcome

This 🧵discusses the CDC report of a COVID outbreak in Massachusetts during July 2021. In Q&A format it address vaccination status, hospitalizations, deaths, types of vaccines, symptoms, variants and more. I went through the report line by line. 1/15 cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/7…
During July 2021, 469 cases of COVID-19 associated with multiple summer events and large public gatherings in a town in Barnstable County, Massachusetts, were identified among Massachusetts residents; vaccination coverage among eligible Massachusetts residents was 69%. 2/15
How many of the 469 infected by COVID were vaccinated?

🔹Vaccinated: 346 (74%)*
🔹Unvaxxed: 123 (26%)

This shows that the vaccine does not prevent transmission. However, the vaccine was created to prevent SEVERE disease, which it does.

*Pfizer, Moderna or J&J vaccine 3/15

Please stop with these headlines! More importantly, only 4 fully vaccinated people were hospitalized and 🚨NONE of them died. This shows that vaccines protect against serious illness, but don’t prevent transmission, so WEAR A MASK and #GetVaccinated
Yesterday I wrote a thread about how few hospitalizations and deaths there are in areas with high vaccination rates such as Massachusetts. The thread compares Israel with Louisiana.

I just spent more time than I originally intended looking at how many people are hospitalized and dying from COVID in Israel, where over 80% of adults are fully vaccinated against COVID. 1/6
Israel conducted the fastest vaccination campaign against COVID so far. Over 80% of adults are fully vaccinated, which is why only 275 people are hospitalized with COVID in the ENTIRE country of 9 million people 2/6 ourworldindata.org/covid-hospital…
In a country of 9 million people, the high vaccination rate has saved numerous lives. Only 1 to 3 people are dying per day from COVID. 3/6

🚨There are no pediatric hospital beds in the state of Oklahoma due to the #DeltaVariant. Children are being transferred out of state to Texas. Doctors are calling for a state of emergency.
People have shared that some of the hospitalizations are due to RSV as well. In any case, lack of pediatric hospital beds in the state is concerning.
Sharing this updated post. Transferring children out of state due to lack of pediatric beds amid a pandemic is a problem. Covid strains hospital systems.

Sigh...
1. Vaccines work evinced by the fact that 99% of COVID deaths are unvaccinated people.

2. Masks are needed b/c the #DeltaVariant is unlike earlier strains since vaccinated people may have as much viral load as unvaccinated people allowing transmission to others
Anyone that says vaccines don't work is intentionally spreading disinformation. 99% of COVID deaths are unvaccinated people.
Important to note, in countries with high vaccination rates, say 80% (Israel), using percent vax vs. unvaxx deaths is not wise b/c a majority are vaxxed.

If you have
8 million vaxxed
2 million unvaxxed

More vaxxed ppl = more vaccine breakthrough disease; usually in elderly
