Oh deer 🦌 … US Dept of Agriculture reports half of all wild deers in Michigan have gotten #SARSCov2 infection. Worrisome. “a human disease cannot be eradicated when it is in animal reservoirs” ~ @larrybrilliant—he led the global eradication of smallpox.

2) “Why check deer in the first place? The USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service is studying a variety of species "to identify species that may serve as reservoirs or hosts for the virus, as well as understand the origin of the virus…
3) “and predict its impacts on wildlife and the risks of cross-species transmission." This is the same group that identified the spread of the virus to a wild mink in 2020. arstechnica.com/science/2020/1…
4) sobering… "Herd immunity is not relevant as we are seeing plenty of evidence of repeat and breakthrough infections," says Dr. Jeffrey Shaman, a Columbia University epidemiologist. We might be getting stuck with #DeltaVariant if we don’t act fast.

5) “The vaccines — they're beautiful, they work, they're amazing," Dr. Frances Lund, a viral immunologist at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, told the Times. "But they're not going to give you that local immunity."…
6) …Vaccinated people will be contagious for a much shorter time, Dr. Lund told the Times. "But that doesn't mean that in those first couple of days, when they're infected, they can't transmit it to somebody else."

BREAKING—Florida shatters its all time high daily record with 11,515 hospitalizations—the highest admissions per hospital bed in the US. FL’s 2020 year record was 10,170. Louisiana surging as well as rest of the South and part of the Southwest. 🧵 #COVID19
2) Not only are hospital beds filling up… “Hospitals around the state report having to put emergency room visitors in beds in hallways and others document a noticeable drop in the age of patients.” ⚠️

3) Positivity % of #COVID19 also surging nationwide. Especially the in South.

💡UPGRADE TO PREMIUM MASKS—"We need to talk about #BetterMasking. We need to talk #N95 Respirators—would do a lot for both people who are not yet vaccinated & protect others who might become infected." ➡️ WE NEED KN95/N95/ELASTOMERIC for #DeltaVariant.🧵
2) 7 months ago, I called on everyone to switch to premium masks when the #B117 #AlphaVariant was surging. Since then FFP2 and KN95 masks have become super cheap and common. Even N95 respirator has now become more common as well. And Elastomeric respirators are more common too.
3) Lots of studies show that the respirator-grade premium masks are what we truly need. The leaky partial protection of cloth and flimsy unfitted surgical alone just not enough.

BREAKING—San Francisco plus 7 additional Silicon Valley area counties now instating a mandatory indoor masks 😷 regardless of vaccination status given the highly transmissible #DeltaVariant. Great start. And also preferably premium masks / respirators too. sf.gov/sites/default/…
2) Why is this needed? Because vaccinated people can still get breakthrough infections, even if 2-3x lower risk of infection, and then transmit onward to others. That said, breakthroughs are much more protected against severe disease, but BEWARE THE FIRDT 6 DAYS—viral load equal.
3) Why to mask indoors, reason number 1million… @LindseyGrahamSC was even vaccinated.

I wanted to vomit when he got to “crack smoking demon possessed leftist”… and that’s after he already told everyone not to mask or vaccinate. But I guess we epidemiologists are just demon-possessed crackheads. 🤦🏻‍♂️ Why are churches still tax exempt again?
2) I’m not saying churches don’t do great charitable things (think Mother Teresa). But I don’t know why the crazy pastor / preacher’s insane church still gets tax exemption. You can’t be endangering public health & support election misinfo and still be tax free.
3) Okay, I just learned some new stuff about Mother Teresa today. Thx for teaching me Twitter friends! I guess we should change the phrase “X is a saint like mother Teresa”

BOOSTERS—Germany 🇩🇪 plans to start offering #COVID19 booster shots to the elderly & high-risk starting September 1, according to draft documents, as concerns grow about the spread of the #DeltaVariant. Details to be announced tomorrow (Monday). sg.style.yahoo.com/germany-plans-…
2) The plan also recommends promoting vaccination for those aged 12-17, which would go further than earlier guidance.
Health Minister Jens Spahn and Germany's 16 regional health ministers are expected to finalise the plans, drawn up by ministry officials, in a meeting Monday.
3) “Mobile vaccination teams will be sent into care and nursing homes to offer Pfizer/BioNTech or Moderna booster shots to residents, regardless of which vaccine they had originally, says the document.” ➡️ MIXING vaccine types seems now okay.

💡VIRAL LOAD of vaccinated versus unvaccinated #DeltaVariant who were hospitalized—2 keys findings:

📌93% lower risk of needing O2

📌 Faster drop in viral load in breakthroughs

📌However, in *first 6 days*, viral load of breakthroughs = unvaccinated! 🧵
medrxiv.org/content/10.110…
2) vaccinated breakthroughs have much milder asymptomatic illness. Note this does not mean vaccinated have more infections - just that *if infected*— it’s much more milder. Risk of #DeltaVariant infection is much lower (some say 40%-64% lower, some studies say 70-79% lower).
3) Also, vaccinated breakthrough #DeltaVariant cases also get neutralized very quickly within days instead of weeks. This is great news. The body fights it off fast with the help of vaccines.

But again, there is risk to others in the first week as shown in viral load above.
