With all due respect to @perrybaconjr
The framing of this piece is absolutely ridiculous and is the quintessential example of inside the beltway thinking (even when it comes from outside the beltway )
Campaign to "Keep Nina Turner out of the House" sounds like it was written by a press flak. Turner ran a mostly locally focused campaign for months. But she did raise millions from donors mostly outside of the district, which makes sense given her national profile
#Ohio11 residents are NOT viewing this race as a proxy battle. Shontel Brown is the local Dem party chair & mentored by Fudge, nobody outside of the DC pundit class sees her as the establishment. Turner is a national surrogate coming back to her old district to serve
Brown would have run whether Turner was in the race or not. The "Stop Nina Turner" language implies there isn't an indigenous appetite for another candidate without national Dem intervention and obviously there is. To be fair Turner nationalized the race before Brown did
#Ohio11 is a total toss-up and there are strong arguments to be made for #shontelbrownforcongress and #NinaTurner but as a profession we need to streer away from extrapolating larger meaning from local races especially when BOTH sides have raised millions from out of state
Not ONE credible Democrat who lost in 20' ran on #DefundThePolice. Quite the opposite. Clyburn's critique of the slogan isn't intra-party warfare because nobody in the party ran on that slogan. It's almost a GOP talking point to suggest otherwise
The majority of Democrats picked Biden for president. The war between Sanders & Biden or HRC exists in the heads of pundits and angry surrogates who can't read the room. Nobody in Ohio City, Lee & Harvard or 140th & St. Claire in #Ohio11 is looking at it that way
If anything this is a race between a national political surrogate and a local party chair. Turner is by no stretch of the imagination an underdog having almost 100% name recognition & having raised millions before Brown could get one ad on the air. #Oh11
I've spoken to more than a half dozen #Ohio11 voters in the last 24 hours. Not one of them used the word "establishment". And the biggest fundraiser in this campaign has been the "progressive" candidate. Let's not confuse facts in favor of the preferred narrative

Not shocked by #TomBrady yucking it up with Biden at the White House at all. Brady is, by all accounts, the exact constituency that pushed Biden over the top in places like GA & Arizona.....
Brady's politics, such as they've been revealed, are that of your typical wealthy conservative white man. He claims to be 'apolitical' but somehow his politics always lean right.
Brady had no problem with Trump in 16, likely voted for him in spite of or perhaps because of the former POTUS overt racism and misogyny but also because he promised lower taxes and greater freedom for the Uber Wealthy like Brady. Win - win.

So I'm enjoying #Hacks and the Jean Smart appreciation that popped up in my TL last night has put me on to several shows I hadn't checked out - Will definitely watch @FargoFX unlikely to check out #MareofEasttown but I do have to say something about Ava on #Hacks
As a consumer of tons of movies & television I absolutely cannot stand the fascination Hollywood writers have with bratty privileged white characters that as supposedly sympathetic because of "fill in the blank" tragedy - IE: Ava is the worst thing about #Hacks
Ava's entire story arc so far (mind you I'm only a few episodes in) reeks of a kind of white woman zoomer privilege that I guess is supposed to be funny and endearing but is downright abrasive to viewers not in that demographic

"Only 20 said yes"
Gotta love how massive income inequality is just glossed over in some reporting to help create the myth of the rugged individualist American entrepreneur. I know whole families that probably couldn't raise an EXTRA $50K in a year
Last semester I taught my @MorganStateU about #SocialCapital and one of the questions I asked was:
If you asked everyone you know in your personal or professional network for $1,000 how much could you raise in one week? They're college kids so most of them guessed maybe 5-8K
The question is framed that way because anybody may have that one rich relative or mentor who could write you a check. But VERY few people could draw upon MULTIPLE connections if the minimum give is $1K. Access to that kind of wealth is even more rare for black Americans

I don't care for most profiles of Trump supporters. Somehow the economic struggles of white men & women are always a justification for violence and racism. However to go from Obama's inauguration to the #Jan6Insurrection is quite a story
propublica.org/article/the-ra…
For example. Posting that you want political leaders DEAD. But somehow the people around you are allowed to say you were just kidding around with buddies? Black folks are jailed for rap lyrics about criminality let alone threats ImageImage
The problem w/ this story is that it doesn't explain HOW this process happened. Yes, lots of racist people voted for Obama. But to actually attend Obama's inauguration at 43 - then be at the insurrection 12 years later? That's pretty late in life for such a radical turn

Like most examples of the Right crowing over #TheLeft getting 'owned' - Conservatives giddiness over #JonStewart suggesting #COVID came out of Wuhan Labs is thanks to a bad faith conflation of racism, corruption and legitimate scientific enquiry
Movies like Outbreak, World War Z, even reboots of Planet of the Apes that start with an infection of some red shirt lab worker that starts a plague. Considering the first #COVID case WAS a Wuhan Lab worker it's not completely for many Americans to look at Wuhan skeptically
But most trusted research suggests that it COULD be from the lab, it could also come from a variety of zoological sources. No one knows for sure - Yet. And we may never know. nature.com/articles/d4158…

I've had a few folks ask how to get access to my new podcast #Aword from @Slate, so I figured I'd re-post a few of our episodes and share some background. Feel free to tag and share with a friend. #Thread
The premise of #AWord @Slate is that race is real, dynamic and everything from white supremacy to #blackgirlmagic plays a role in pop culture, economics and politics. I don't talk down to listeners, we want you to enjoy and catch up

My discussion w/ @JIJennings abt #FalconAndWinterSoldier addresses some of the challenges and success in trying to make fun and realistic black super heroes in a large corporate environment like @DisneyStudios slate.com/podcasts/a-wor…
