This makes me lose respect for Gary as it sounds like Simpson’s comic book guy whining over the color of spirdermans costume in some film or something. Very weak.

There were plenty of cheesy Conan pastiche type films back then and in the decade(s) to follow. “Conan” himself deserved a film which was a real piece of vital art. Milius and Stone absolutely delivered that. 
The main theme of Howard’s Conan is the corrupting influence of “civilization” vs the noble savage. The film absolutely delivers on that theme. It even ties in the concept of hippy dippy free love & the dark forces behind it. Which Conan decapitates. Like he would in a REH story
It just occurred to me now but the film was even revealing to the perceptive audience member how anti-r4cism is a cult and false religion pushed by the same jerks behind “muh free love”.
I think folks who cast REH’s Conan as just some pulp strongman forget or don’t realize the importance that the characters first story has him following theosophic omens to kill a Cthulhu monster.
