BIG: @Everytown just launched #DemandASeat—a program to train @MomsDemand and @StudentsDemand volunteers and gun violence survivors to become successful candidates and campaign staff for elected offices up & down the ballot. The goal: Demand. Run. Change. nytimes.com/2021/08/10/us/…
Our more than six million-strong grassroots army is one of the largest advocacy and political volunteer networks in the country, with highly engaged volunteers who have successfully changed the political calculus on gun safety.
#DemandASeat is harnessing this energy, helping these volunteers take the next step in their gun safety advocacy, going from shaping policy to making policy.
Our volunteers are not new to elected office: In 2020, over 100 volunteers ran and 43 won, demonstrating an ability to win races for city councils, school boards, and state legislatures across the country. With #DemandASeat, we will build on this success and expand our power.
Two former Moms Demand Action volunteers are also now in the U.S. Congress — @RepLucyMcBath (GA-06) and @RepMarieNewman (IL-03). #DemandASeat is building on this organic success to support volunteer candidates and draw on lessons learned from previous cycles.
Put simply, our lawmakers have failed us too many times, so we’re going to replace them with candidates that have a proven track record of fighting the gun lobby.
#DemandASeat will recruit, provide opportunities for mentorship, and train at least 200 grassroots volunteers to run during the 2021-2022 election cycle and will invest at least $3 million in these candidates over the next two election cycles.
We’ve been investing in training our volunteers for more than eight years and they’re among the best advocates in the country. Our volunteers have spent years passing laws, and now they’ll be writing them.
In addition to candidates, #DemandASeat will help identify, match and train volunteers who want to serve as campaign managers on races. Volunteers can join the program even if they are just thinking about running.
Longtime campaign experts will train participants on the nuts and bolts of building and running a successful campaign. Training will focus on a range of topics, including organizing, messaging, and fundraising best practices.
Participation in #DemandASeat is open to any Moms Demand Action or @StudentsDemand volunteer or gun violence survivor, focusing primarily on first-time candidates. Many of the candidates will run for local offices, such as school boards and city or town councils.
Polling shows that gun safety is a top issue for voters. #DemandASeat will help build a deep bench of gun safety candidates at all levels of office and help create a pipeline of future gun sense champions for higher office. Our volunteers are moving from advocacy to lawmaking!

Diana Garlington fondly recalls the last Thanksgiving she spent with her daughter, Esscence T. Christal. "We laughed, danced, reminisced & ended with taking our family photo. She clung tightly to my arm and insisted on sitting on my lap for what would be unreadily our last time.”
The following day, Esscence was killed in a drive-by shooting, leaving behind a young son. She was just 21. The pain of Esscence’s death is worsened by the fact that her case remains unsolved. “Since her demise, she has been left in a file and given a number,” Diana said.
In the 3,431 days that Diana has gone without answers about Esscence’s killing, she has worked with organizations such as RI Coalition Against Gun Violence, One Gun Gone, and Moms Demand Action to support gun violence survivors.

When asked directly "to condemn white supremacists and militia groups and to say that they need to stand down," Pres. Trump told the Proud Boys––a far right Islamophobic and misogynist hate group––to “stand back and stand by" during last night's debate. twitter.com/i/events/13111…
The Proud Boys rejoiced at Trump’s implicit endorsement & decision not to condemn white supremacy. Members immediately began sharing the group's logo with his words, and started selling a “Stand By” shirt.
The Proud Boys, founded by a noted racist, anti-Semite, and Islamophobe, are a group of violent, far-right extremists who often express racist beliefs. They have appeared alongside other hate groups at extremist gatherings like the ‘Unite the Right’ rally in Charlottesville.

Donald Trump’s refusal to take action to address gun violence has brought us four deadly years. Ahead of tonight’s first #PresidentialDebate of 2020, here are some facts about Trump’s paltry record on gun safety voters should know:

#Debates2020
On every level Donald Trump has refused to take action to address gun violence, and his failures have brought us four deadly years. In fact, more than 145K Americans have died by gun violence under his watch. #Debates2020
The gun lobby spent $31 million to elect Trump. Since then, Trump has shaped U.S. gun policy to the gun lobby’s demands, not the vast majority of Americans who want action on gun safety. #Debates2020

More than 141K Americans have died from gun violence during Donald Trump’s presidency — an average of over 100 people every day. Even more have been wounded. Here are 8 ways Pres. Trump, with help from the NRA, has failed to keep Americans safe from gun violence. ⬇️ #RNC2020 Image
Pres. Trump vowed to veto common-sense background check legislation: Over a year ago, the U.S. House passed #HR8—a bill to require background checks on all gun sales. The bill has sat on Mitch McConnell’s desk ever since, because he and Pres. Trump refuse to support it. #RNC2020
After the mass shootings in Dayton and El Paso, Pres. Trump promised to support life-saving Red Flag laws, but took no action. Red Flag laws allow temporary removal of firearms from those who pose a threat to themselves or others. #RNC2020
