Supreme Court Bar Association's farewell for Justice Rohinton Fali Nariman to begin shortly. Chief Justice of India NV Ramana to preside over the event. #SupremeCourt #JusticeNariman #Farewell
Adv Ardhendumauli K Prasad: Justice Nariman is an expert in Comparative Constitutional Law. His career has been remarkable and has served as the Solicitor General of India.
Adv Prasad: His judgment evidenced that he read the Constitution very liberally.
CJI NV Ramana and Justice Nariman being felicitated. #SupremeCourt
Sr Adv Pradeep Rai: He was an extraordinary student in the kaw faculty. He always secured top marks. When I joined the bar, Justice Nariman was already a senior advocate.
Rai: Justice Nariman was very generous. He was the only one who had a car during academic days. His friends told me that he was the one who used to give his friends lift during exams #SupremeCourt
Sr Adv Rai: One of the richest contribution of Justice Nariman was the Indira Jaising case where guidelines for senior designation of lawyers were laid down. #SupremeCourt@IJaising
AG KK Venugopal: I cannot let Justice Nariman leave the Supreme Court without saying a few words. It was a great honour for me to practice before him. Justice Nariman is a priest who was ordained at the age of 12 and recites the Holy Book by heart
AG: He is himself an authority on religion all across the world. He was a junior in my chamber and he was a star among all my juniors. #SupremeCourt
AG: AG: His grandness as a scholar and a jurist is his desire to remain a life time student irrespective of his stature. As a judge he has more than 500 judgements and has made immense contribution to Indian jurisprudence.
AG: Justice Nariman had held Right to Privacy is held as an intrinsic part of Right to Life under Article 21. He also struck down adultery as a criminal offence. He also struck down 66A of IT Act as unconstitutional
AG: In relation to the Kanwar Yatra and Bakrid celebration he had held religion cannot in any manner with the most precious fundamental right of right to life. He has also issued directions for CCTV in police stations.
AG: Justice Nariman also struck down parts of constitutional amendment in Rajendra Shah's case relating to Cooperative Societies. He also held Arbitration Acts Section 87's retrospective effect was arbitrary
AG: Arbitration committee is grateful to Justice Nariman for his judgements. His retirement means opening up several other opportunities and look forward to read his opinion in diverse public platforms. #SupremeCourt
AG: I agree with a recent article which called him a "Constitutional Czar par excellence."
Sr Adv Vikas Singh: His retirement evokes mixed feelings in me. It's my loss as president of the Bar that we are losing a brilliant judge. Unlike others repaid debt of the institution by accepting office as a Supreme Court judge
Singh: Justice Nariman's one day salary as a lawyer is more than what he earned in these seven years as a Supreme Court judge! That is what he sacrificed #SupremeCourt
Singh: Junior lawyers were very fearful when he became a judge as everyone was scared. But what a transformation! He was so nice to the bar. He read the briefs more thoroughly and knew points in favour of lawyers which the advocates themselves did not know
Singh: My request to the collegium is all the judges he wanted to be elevated to the top court should be cleared and that will be the most befitting tribute.
Singh: Elevation of SC lawyers has always been a vexed issue. A lawyer from the bar should be directly elevated to Supreme Court to fill the vacancy now
Singh: We are grateful to CJI that he is considering our request to have Supreme Court lawyers elevated as judges in the High Courts.
Sr Adv Singh: Justice Nariman has the authority to enter the sanctum sanctorum of Parsi temple and even conduct marriage ceremonies. He can also understand Rigveda.
Justice Nariman in his book has analysed the dissenting verdicts. Dissenters has been described as the ones who chiselled the meaning of constitutional law. He has also expressed hope that the first woman CJI is not far off: Singh
I urge CJI Ramana that a quota for woman judges be introduced and that is the way to have more women judges in the Supreme Court: Singh
Supreme Court lawyers welfare trust was set up by Justice Nariman. He is very good tinkering with hands. He is called as the Bagpiper of the family: Singh
CJI NV Ramana: Mr Vikas Singh knows a lot of secrets of judges which we ourselves don't know. He does not leave any chance in stating his demands (smiles) #SupremeCourt
CJI: I wanted to give an extempore lecture but it's better I stick to the written speech. When other children were playing games at 12, he became an ordained priest. His extraordinary grooming explains his reading of law
CJI: You all are aware of his scholarship. Justice Nariman has contributed significantly to various committees of the Supreme Court.
CJI: the most obvious sacrifice to become a judge is monetary of course. I believe judges should not completely seclude from society. However our engagement with society undergoes drastic change when we become a judge.
CJI: It is not easy to prepare for more than 100 cases a week, listen to arguments and also attend to administrative duties. False narrative is created for the easy life led by Judges. It is duty of bar to diffuse this false narrative.
CJI: I hope the picture I have painted does not deter anyone from becoming a judge. The reward is in upholding the rule of law.
CJI: I feel we are losing a lion which was guarding the judicial institutions. Wishing Justice Nariman the best of health and happiness.
Justice Nariman: It is with mixed feeling that I leave this institution. First is relief since 6 pm willl not be case briefs but what ordinary citizens does !
Justice Nariman: When I came here in 1977 I was working in the chambers of Justice Krishna Iyer and he was unfailingly polite. Unfailingly.
Justice Nariman: I saw two major hearings when I went to Harvard. I was Nani Palkhivala in the Minnerva Mills casr dealing with Mrs Gandhi's 42nd amendment. He buttressed everything he argued with examples #SupremeCourt
Justice Nariman: My father's extraordinary ability as a lawyer was he read the judges mind and thus instantly replied to any questions posed.
Justice Nariman: AG Venugopal was a devoted husband, father and a senior. I learnt a lot from them. I considered Ld AG KK Venugopal as my "Guru" forever
Justice Nariman: Justice Venkatachaliah picked me up during my practice days when I had set it up reasonably well. I had worked really hard to pick a loophole in one of the judgements by Justice Venkatachaliah. The judges said it was covered. I was shocked.
Justice Nariman: I was called back and asked was anything wrong. I said yes. He asked if his judgment was wrong, I showed him why. He recalled his order and issued notice. Then he asked me for his written research.
Justice Nariman: Chief Justice Ahmadi was one of the most outstanding judges and he had a way of invariably arriving at a correct decision. He gave the junior some more leeway than the senior
Justice Nariman: Justice Kuldeep Singh was a dear friend. A lawyer once asked for some more time. Then some more time and went on. He did not deny. These are all learning experiences
Justice Nariman: I really miss Arun Jaitely. I don't think I have met a more dignified lawyer than him. I have seen him as Tis Hazari lawyer and also rushing for seniors. As a lawyer let alone as Minister etc he was always exceptionally well prepared and dignified.
Justice Nariman: When a judge was retiring, he told me in court, Justice Nariman do you have something to say. I said no my Lord, not much left. He said, say something, this is ny last time I can hear you in court.
CJI Ramana leaves the event for a flight.
Justice Nariman continues.
Justice Nariman: Justice Chinappa Reddy was also a great mentor. Chief Justice Lodha made me do a great public service and he insisted I accepted judgeship. He said accept it now. He said let me consult my wife. You don't know what my parsi wife will say.
Justice Nariman: When I was at the bar I had no idea how it would be like at the bench. This side (as a judge) is much more difficult than a lawyer. You have to read much much more. I enjoyed writing judgements and at the end it worked out well.
Justice Nariman: Nobody has any legitimate expectation to this court but one can expect a certain quality of justice from this court. For this merit is predominant and comes first
Justice Nariman: It is time for direct appointments to be made to this profession. After getting and reaping so much, this profession allows one to give back. #supremecourtofindia
Justice Nariman thanks his secretary and his law clerk
Justice Nariman: I also thank Narain Verma who has been with me since 1977. He or me will one day succumb to this mortal world. God bless the Supreme Court, now and always.
