Child Covid-19 hospitalizations soar, filling pediatric wings, data show
nbcnews.com/news/us-news/c…
The U.S. faces another peak in child hospitalizations as the delta variant hits communities hesitant to get vaccinated.

Yes. Those will be the only places this happens in.
It happened fast: As of Wednesday, U.S. hospitals were tending to an average of more than 1,200 children a day, twice the number from the end of July and four times from the start of July. Image
The HHS data show that pediatric hospitalizations when adjusted for population are highest in Alabama, Florida, Delaware, Louisiana and Oklahoma; in all but Delaware, full vaccination rates are lower than the national rate.

National about 52% total. ImageImageImage
THE MASK MANDATES ARE A DISTRACTION.

Finally, PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. — A South Florida pediatrician is worried about the continued rise in COVID-19 cases among children, especially now that the new school year is underway.

1/
wptv.com/coronavirus/co…
17%!!!!! Palm Beach Pediatrics has three locations and all are seeing an increase of COVID cases among children. Just this past week, they were at a 17% positivity rate among their patients -- testing only the children who have symptoms. But things weren't like this before.

2/
Since October their offices had a low positivity rate of 5% to 6%. It even got to a 2% positivity rate in June 2021. But in the middle of July is when everything changed. There were more diagnoses of COVID-19 in children just within their medical offices.

3/
"The delta variant that was hitting the area in July is something that is more contagious and causing more children to be symptomatic," said Fox-Levine. "We have seen an increase with all of the kids going to camp over the summer and then restart school."

4/
"It is the perfect storm. We had the increase in rates just as the kids were starting to go back to school. 2-3 weeks before school started, our office started calculating the %age increase. We were seeing some days upwards of 40% +ty rate from sick kids that we were testing."
I thought it was nuclear war.
Missed the 13th month marker of this thread the other day. How is this possible that we are doing worse now than last summer? We want kids to go to school to learn, yet our leaders don't demonstrate that they can.

1. After watching this so closely - seeing so much going wrong I was more angry than I've been

2. Many people are posting about kids now so the attn is there

3. I wanted to make something that could be use for requesting a remote option
It seems too little too late to make something but as COVID cases continue to rise, every day is a new opportunity to advocate, so please do so.

I made a little rinky dink website to share documents. If you have a letter, I will post it (if ya know, it's not bananas).
I have the #DeltaSchoolsAirborne page linked and @TySopko letter is there.

Big thanks to Ty for helping me with my contribution.

Everyone has done a ton of work on things that will help make schools safer. Thank goodness.

I wanted to focus on remote as an option for all.
I started with a little letter and driven by that anger and also poor executive function that means I like info in chunks, it morphed into a PowerPoint.

You can use it all. You can present it. You can email it. You can take pieces. You can post it on Facebook (hahaha wooo!)
Same with @TySopko letter! Hopefully others will let me put their letters and info up so that whatever clicks with you is something you can send to your Governor, Reps, BOE, Supt, local unions, POTUS, whoever.

Please consider sharing and better, using!

Because when these kids need Social Security and other safety nets, the people making decisions about their lives won't be in office anymore.

The saying is kicking the can down the road - but it's kids. Shameful.

From @jmcrookston

Most kids who suffer crippling long COVID symptoms get better. Doctors worry about those who don’t.

We should all worry about these kids. And not for ableist reasons. But because these illnesses could be prevented.

“We’re not sending our kids in to be canaries in the mine”

US parents and educators denounce school openings as COVID infections spiral out of control

1

98% of K-12 schools in the US are now open for in-person instruction, leading to a spread of COVID-19 infections in schools and surrounding communities. Over 94% of the country is experiencing “high” levels of transmission, according to CDC and cases among children have exploded.
More than 1.2 million infections among children ages 0 to 17 have been reported in the US since July 22 when schools began reopening for the fall semester. This is roughly 20 percent of the 5,292,837 child cases since the pandemic began, according to data from the AAP.

3
Tragically, 111 children have died since July 22, about a quarter of the 460 total childhood COVID-19 fatalities. According to the CDC, nearly 30,000 children were hospitalized in August alone.

Read more at the link on how bad it is in schools and how it will get worse. Reality.

21% of children hospitalized with COVID require ICU care, study finds

Whoops how did that get through the news sanitizer?

“That’s higher than I think most people would expect,” said Dr. James Antoon, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt.
“More than half of children admitted to the hospital with COVID did not have underlying health conditions,” said Antoon. “However, those with underlying health conditions and very specific comorbidities had a much higher risk of severe disease.”

We get it. It's those kids.
“A concerning part of this study is that 70% of children who are hospitalized are not eligible for the vaccine. They’re younger than 12 and we need to protect those children.”

Though the article tried to tie it to age and vaccination and they wonder why people wonder.
Greater disease severity was associated with Black or other non-White children.

Of course. That's why there isn't remote options.

New COVID variant detected in South Africa and 7 other countries - Europe incl -most mutated variant so far

Is it worse?

The paper: The continuous evolution of SARS-CoV-2 in South Africa: a new lineage with rapid accumulation of mutations of concern and global detection
From discussion: Many of the shared mutations have been associated with improved ACE2 binding (N501Y)25–29 or furin cleavage (H655Y and P681H/R)30–32, and reduced neutralization activity (particularly Y144del, 242-244del, and E484K)17,33–39, providing sufficient cause for concern
of continued transmission of this variant. Future work aims to determine the functional impact of these mutations, which likely include neutralizing antibody escape, and to investigate whether their combination confers a replicative fitness advantage over the Delta variant.

The plan was actually kind of decent (airborne aside completely).

Then they gave the power to the states.

In "red" states they said cool, no rules. In "blue" states they said let consultants make rules to help businesses.

Results of what? Rates of SARS-CoV-2 transmission & vaccination impact fate of vax-resistant strains

Modeling study
This isn't so much about the vax we are using. It's about leadership it seems? (A few tweets⬇️)

"Specifically, a concern is whether a combination of vaccination and transmission rates can create positive selection pressure on the emergence & establishment of resistant strains"
To address this issue, we implemented a model to simulate the probability of emergence of a resistant strain as a function of vaccination rates and changes in the rate of virus transmission, resembling those caused by non-pharmaceutical interventions and behavioural changes
