The Planning Committee Meeting is about to begin where they will be discussing the Heron Gate "Social Framework" and the @ottawacity affordable housing plan.
Find the list of public delegates below, there are 25 public delegates today speaking to Heron Gate and speaks to how controversial the decision to be made today is:
@ottawacity Looking at a very long meeting today with public delegates and councillor questions to staff and applicant (Hazelview) about this issue.
@ottawacity There are a number of items on the agenda today that have public delegates not only in Heron Gate, also a controversial development on Clyde Avenue in #CollegeWard and another in Centretown, etc.
We will be tuning off after the 3rd item but encourage folks to continue watching!
@ottawacity We now have a presentation on Item 2. The 2021 Affordable Housing Capital Strategy from Director of Housing Services Saide Sayah and Lauren Reeves also with @ottawacity.
@ottawacity Pretty shocking statistic here to start, Reeves of @ottawacity says that number of folks in the shelter system has gone down but that is only because more people have decided to sleep on the street during #COVID19 pandemic - this is huge indictment of the #Ottawa shelter system.
@ottawacity Another reminder that @ottawacity and @JimWatsonOttawa just put $15 million into affordable housing in the last budget, with federal funds that makes up $44 million for the City, more than $300 million less than the @OttawaPolice budget.
This isn't a visionary approach to tackle the housing crisis.
Another recommendation from staff to move $7 million from Gladstone Village to 715 Mikinak Road Project in Waterridge Village in Rideau-Rockcliffe Ward. #ottcity
The presentation going on now is basically what @ottawacity staff are recommending councillors do with the $15 million for affordable housing.
A lot of the money is being recycled from other projects and is a stark example of how little resources our city invests in housing.
@ottawacity We're hearing now from Caroline Cox from @sghottawa who is speaking to their project on 216 Murray Street to improve and expand their operations.
Caroline Cox of @sghottawa speaking about how we need permanent not temporary housing, she says that some decisions from the Planning Committee and @ottawacity council are delaying building of new affordable housing and shelter space.
@sghottawa@ottawacity .@MathieuFleury asks question about Rapid Housing Imitative, saying that it is a federal program, it is federal money, why are we putting @ottawacity money into it?
@ottawacity staff agrees and says you're right - most housing so far is for single people.
@sghottawa@ottawacity@MathieuFleury .@JLeiper asks question about funds for affordable housing in his ward, asks if they are able to continue using development charges for community benefits?
Number sits at 12,000 now, staff says it is trending higher but they are also encouraging more to apply. We suspect it is less that they are encouraging ppl to apply and more that the crisis is worsening
@ottawacity There was a motion from @ShawnMenard1 to continue having discussions with @OttawaACORN and other groups before moving forward, were not sure if that passed or not.
As we said, we will be trying to catch some of the meeting but will not be able to catch all of it.
Xue Xu says pronouns and phonetic pronunciation to be added to delegations.
We missed some of Xue Xu's delegation but here are some highlights:
"Myself and others heard again and again, that students, especially gender minorities, racialized and disabled people, are having stressful, even traumatic interactions because of special constables."
"I myself, too, was falsely arrested by special constables as a student on my previous campus, my charges later dropped, a situation that was terrifying for me as someone with a disability that means I cannot reliably control what I say." said Xu
The #Ottawa Police Services Board is starting now.
We will be giving live updates and you can follow it in the thread below:
Member Smallwood announces that there will be more effort to take to folks earlier about the @OttawaPolice budget process. The plan will be up for approval tonight.
Today marks exactly one year since @ottawacity declared a housing emergency so let's the actions #Ottawa City Council has taken so far (a thread) 1/6:
Instead of putting the necessary funding they need for housing they put 25x more money towards the @OttawaPolice 25x than building new affordable homes. 2/6
Despite having very limited affordable housing supply, they voted to build the new Barrhaven LRT through a working-class neighbourhood 3/6
Tune in right now at the link below to watch the first #Ottawa City Council meeting of thr new year. We will be tweeting some parts of it!
First ever meeting of #Ottawa City Council that is opened up by a land acknowledgement by well-known indigenous elder, Claudette Commanda.
.@JimWatsonOttawa now giving state of City address, talking about fundraiser for #Ottawa food bank with @Shopify CFO @harleyf, saying they fundraised $300k, leaving out the fact that the last City budget took away money from essential community services to give to @OttawaPolice
