#BREAKING: We filed an emergency request with the U.S. Supreme Court to block Texas’ radical six-week abortion ban #SB8 before it takes effect on September 1. If #SCOTUS does not intervene, abortion after six weeks into pregnancy will come to an abrupt stop in Texas on Wednesday.
❗ Approximately 85% to 90% of people who obtain an abortion in Texas are at least six weeks into pregnancy, meaning this law would prohibit nearly all abortions in the state.
❗ If this law is allowed to take effect, the average one-way driving distance for Texans seeking an abortion would increase 20-fold, from 12 miles to 248 miles, according to new research from @Guttmacher.
❗ This law would fall hardest on the communities that already bear the brunt of Texas’ pre-existing web of medically unnecessary abortion restrictions: people of color, people with low incomes, and young people.

"...Patients will have to travel out of state – in the middle of a pandemic – to receive constitutionally guaranteed healthcare. And many will not have the means to do so. It’s cruel, unconscionable, and unlawful.” —Nancy Northup, Center president and CEO
“Texans, like everyone else in this country, should be able to count on safe abortion care in their own state..."—Amy Hagstrom Miller, @WholeWomans CEO
"...No one should be forced to drive hundreds of miles or be made to continue a pregnancy against their will, yet that’s what will happen unless the Supreme Court steps in..."—Amy Hagstrom Miller, @WholeWomans CEO
"...Whole Woman’s Health clinics will be open to provide abortion care up until the minute this law takes effect. We urge the Supreme Court to protect patients' health & allow us to continue providing the essential healthcare Texans deserve.”—Amy Hagstrom Miller, @WholeWomans CEO
🚨#BREAKING🚨 The U.S. Supreme Court has denied our emergency request to block Texas’ radical abortion ban #SB8 from taking effect.
“We are devastated that the Supreme Court has refused to block a law that blatantly violates #RoevWade. Right now, people seeking abortion across Texas are panicking—they have no idea where or when they will be able to get an abortion, if ever...”—Nancy Northup, Center CEO
“..Texas politicians have succeeded for the moment in making a mockery of the rule of law, upending abortion care in Texas, and forcing patients to leave the state – if they have the means – to get constitutionally protected healthcare...” —Nancy Northup, Center CEO
“Right now, Roe v. Wade is effectively a dead letter in Texas. We are deeply concerned that the Supreme Court has yet to take action on our urgent request to enjoin Texas’ near-total ban on abortions...” —Nancy Northup, Center president and CEO
“...Texas’ pernicious abortion ban is now in effect, upending abortion care in the state, with devastating consequences for those without the means to go elsewhere to exercise their constitutional rights...” —Nancy Northup, Center president and CEO
“...Patients are panicking, with no idea how they will get the abortion they need. This case is not over, and we will be continuing to fight in court until this law is struck down.” —Nancy Northup, Center president and CEO
A statement from Nancy Northup, Center president & CEO, on today’s lawsuit filing to block Texas law #SB8: “If this oppressive law takes effect, it will decimate abortion access in Texas--and that’s exactly what it is designed to do..."
“...The state has put a bounty on the head of any person or entity who so much as gives a patient money for an abortion after six weeks of pregnancy, before most people know they are pregnant. Worse, it will intimidate loved ones from providing support for fear of being sued...”
“...And this is happening to Texans as we are fighting another direct challenge to Roe v. Wade in the Supreme Court, out of Mississippi. We will pursue every legal avenue we can to block this and other pernicious laws.”
#BREAKING: We're suing #Texas. Joined by Whole Woman's Health (@wholewomans) and a broad coalition of abortion providers and others who assist patients in accessing abortion, we’ve filed a lawsuit to block the state's radical new law banning abortion as early as six weeks.
❗The Texas law, #SB8, also encourages *anyone* to act as a bounty hunter by awarding $10,000+ to anyone who successfully sues another person for providing or assisting an abortion after six weeks. #SB8 is set to take effect on September 1. #TXDeservesBetter
❗#SB8 blatantly violates Texans’ constitutional right to privacy and liberty as established by #RoevWade nearly 50 years ago.
#BREAKING: The U.S. House Appropriations Committee has introduced a spending bill WITHOUT the Hyde Amendment! 👏 Congress’ bold move introducing a spending bill without this ban on abortion is just the beginning—we won’t stop until we #BeBoldEndHyde for good.
A statement from Nancy Northup, Center President and CEO: “We applaud the House Appropriations Committee, under the leadership of Chairwoman Rosa DeLauro, for introducing bills free from restrictions on coverage of abortion care...”
“...For more than 40 years, bans on abortion coverage, including the Hyde amendment and related restrictions, have denied insurance coverage of abortion for people working to make ends meet...”
