Attacks on civilians in #Daraa al-Balad intensified this weekend w/ reports of casualties & heavy shelling. The regime has besieged the city since June, strangling food, medicine & electric to over 50,000 people, in retaliation to local criticism of Assad's sham ‘re-election’ 1/5
Ceasefire negotiations are in peril after the Assad regime refused to recognize peoples’ right to demonstrate and express their opinion, and called for house searches and additional military checkpoints. 2/5
To further escalate tensions, on Saturday morning the regime sent green buses to Daraa al-Balad – reminiscent of Syria’s worst sieges – threatening to forcibly displace Daraa al-Balad’s civilians to northern Syria. 3/5
What’s happening in Daraa is a humanitarian and diplomatic disaster. People are trapped between surrendering to the regime that will crack down on those who opposed Assad’s rule, or fleeing their homes to the already overcrowded Idlib province. 4/5
Beside taking to social media to condemn the brutal attacks, world leaders must take real action to pressure Russia, the guarantor of the 2018 reconciliation agreement in Daraa, to urgently reinstate the ceasefire & stop attacks on civilians & the starvation siege. 5/5 #SaveDaraa

So much has happened in #Syria in the past week – world leaders must end their silence in the face of terrifying developments and the suffering of civilians across the country. Turning a blind eye to all these atrocities only gives the regime a green light to commit more. THREAD
#Daraa al-Balad has seen its autonomy crushed in the past days following 79 days of siege & heavy attack. Citizens now face additional military checkpoints, house searches & the threat of arrest for expressing opposition to the regime. 38k people remain displaced from their homes
Meanwhile the regime & Russia escalated attacks on NW Syria in the last 24h, striking towns, a camp & medical point killing 5 civilians & injuring 11. Since June over 120 civilians were killed incl. 45 children. #COVID in #Idlib is worsening with a record 1417 new cases on Friday
Thousands of Syrians were disappeared by #ISIS. Why haven’t local authorities @SDCPress & the US-led anti-ISIS @coalition prioritized the search for the missing & giving answers to their families?
Twenty-eight mass graves have been discovered since the territorial defeat of #ISIS in northeast Syria three years ago, report local First Responders who continue to exhume new graves in the search for thousands of missing people. truthafterisis.org/en/
New maps published today based on @SJAC_info data show that three of the mass graves are located on former prison sites, increasing fears that many of the missing might have been killed in detention truthafterisis.org/en/
1/ Around 800,000 people in #Hasakah and its surrounding villages in northeast Syria have been deprived of drinking water after Turkey-backed Syrian opposition factions cut off supply from the main water pump since August 1st.
2/ Enwer Suleiman, a resident of Hasakah, said:
“We have been suffering from water shortages for years. It’s not the first time Turkey cut our water and won’t be the last. The water used to be cut off for fewer days, but now it’s been 25 days straight."
3/ "People can’t afford to buy water from other sources because it’s expensive and the economy is deteriorating. We spend hours standing in long queues under the burning sun waiting for our turn to get a few liters of water from wells, which are unsafe to use."
“The corona situation here is very bad” says a doctor in Damascus who remains anonymous for their safety. As hospitals overflow with COVID patients, the official number claimed by the Syrian regime & WHO is only 1432. Greatly at odds with the reported situation on the ground. 1/4
“As a doctor if I speak up, I will get bullied by Assad’s supporters and I will get intimidated by security, but we can’t remain silent anymore, people are dying here. Cases of COVID-19 infections and deaths are increasing drastically in regime-held areas..." 2/4
"... but there is complete negligence and mismanagement from the Syrian authorities. People with symptoms are unable to seek medical care or get tested because hospitals are overwhelmed and unaffordable to many, especially with the deteriorating economy.” 3/4
The horror of a #coronavirus outbreak in refugee camps is unimaginable. While people around the world are told to wash their hands, people in overcrowded camps in #Idlib and Greece have no access to soap & water
The ceasefire in #Idlib must be protected and more than a million IDPs need to be able to return home. European countries must urgently resettle refugees from camps in the Greek islands #RefugeesWelcome
In #Idlib months of bombing have destroyed over 60 medical facilities and targeted medical & rescue workers. There's a huge need for clean drinking water and 3 in 10 children under five years old are malnourished, raising the risk of infection
Today head of @SyriaCivilDef@RaedAlSaleh3 told a cross party group of UK MPs that “For 9 years the international community has made statements and called for ceasefires. The situation has only gotten worse. It is time to try something new”.
.@RaedAlSaleh3: “The crisis in #Idlib cannot be described in numbers or words. It is much bigger than anything we have seen before. How can I explain 1 million people forced from their homes, 70% of them children?”
.@RaedAlSaleh3: “The @UN has failed in Syria in every way. Russia is killing us with warplanes but the UN needs Russian approval to send aid”
