Ceasefire negotiations are in peril after the Assad regime refused to recognize peoples’ right to demonstrate and express their opinion, and called for house searches and additional military checkpoints. 2/5
To further escalate tensions, on Saturday morning the regime sent green buses to Daraa al-Balad – reminiscent of Syria’s worst sieges – threatening to forcibly displace Daraa al-Balad’s civilians to northern Syria. 3/5
What’s happening in Daraa is a humanitarian and diplomatic disaster. People are trapped between surrendering to the regime that will crack down on those who opposed Assad’s rule, or fleeing their homes to the already overcrowded Idlib province. 4/5
Beside taking to social media to condemn the brutal attacks, world leaders must take real action to pressure Russia, the guarantor of the 2018 reconciliation agreement in Daraa, to urgently reinstate the ceasefire & stop attacks on civilians & the starvation siege. 5/5
