@GlobalFund 2021 #ResultsReport: A reader’s guide

#COVID19 is the headline, but there is a lot more to talk about, especially with the #7thReplenishment coming up.
theglobalfund.org/media/11304/co…
a 🧵...
#TB is front and center, because it was worst hit by #COVID19. Resources in pulmonary health diverted from TB towards Covid19 – doctors, beds, GeneXpert machines and cartridges – on top of everything else.
🧵
#HIV was impacted too, especially #prevention and #testing. #Malaria fared better, probably in part because countries with endemic malaria were hit by #COVID19 latter, though testing did drop.
🧵
Less testing and lower prevention for the 3 diseases is scary. The effects could be long-term, extend past the acute #COVID19 crisis.
🧵
The upside is that the crisis has lifted a lot of roadblocks around innovation and financing, and has highlighted both the weakest and most resilient part of health systems, with #CommunityLedPrograms faring relatively better.
🧵
On key indicators, despite #COVID19, the 2025 targets are still within our grasp for #HIV and #TB. In #Malaria, the decline in mosquito net use seen in 2019 continues, but the resilience of testing is reassuring.
🧵
#HIV Results
56% of new infections are found in women and girls, with the bulk among those under 24. The numbers of infections and death continues to decrease, despite #COVID19
🧵
#TB Results
Global data only available for 2019, so impact of #COVID19 still incomplete. The lag in TB data is an old issue, but especially concerning now, when dramatic changes y-to-y are to be expected, as seen in India and Bangladesh with 20% drop in reported cases
🧵
#TB results
Diversion of resources from TB to COVID is heartbreaking, but has an upside of sorts: countries with strong capacity against TB have had more resources to fight COVID, and some of the investments to fight COVID could be later redeployed against TB.
🧵
#Malaria Results
Progress had stalled on key Malaria indicators prior to #COVID19. Though testing decreased, mosquito net distribution increased, in part thanks communities who played a central role in adaptation and resilience.
🧵
#RHSS Results
The removal of #HumanRights barriers and the role of communities are not displaced by a focus on PPR and formal health systems, which is reassuring. The implementation of the CCM Evolution in 93 countries in ongoing
🧵
#Investment
In 2019, the @GlobalFund had disbursed 3.5bn. In 2020 it has disbursed more than 5bn, including almost 1bn additional fund to fight #COVID19. Absorbing and disbursing 40% more funds despite the Covid crisis is 🤯
🧵
The report highlights both the setbacks brought by #COVID19 and the achievements of the @GlobalFund 20 years after its creation. Most worrying is that the pandemic impacted hardest detection and prevention with potential long-lasting effects
🧵
And this is now the challenge of the #7thReplenishment: get the resources to regain lost ground in the midst of an unprecedented crisis, and put us #BackOnTrack to 2025 and 2030.
