More than half of Pakistanis, 55%, favor Taliban rule in #Afghanistan, shows @GallupPak survey. Only 25% unhappy. There are apparently 4 categories of Pakistanis when it comes to their views vis-a-vis Taliban takeover of the neighboring country👇[thread] thenews.com.pk/amp/891487-55p…
First group, which is the largest, supports Taliban govnt in #Afghanistan because they consider Taliban as pro #Pakistan and anti #India. It includes a good chunk of highly educated urbanized people, pro-establishment and those influenced by state propaganda.
This category, mostly self-proclaimed patriots, favors a Pakistan-friendly govt in #Kabul and propagated former Afghan govt’s anti-Pakistan statements, particularly that of Mohib & Saleh’s quite extensively to legitimize their support for Taliban. This worldview is India centric.
I’m not a fan of Amrullah Saleh. He’s blocked me on Twitter, for no reason. He became the victim of his own tongue. He used to badmouth his revivals and opponents, including Mr Ghani until becoming his VP (against Tajik leadership).
But it is sad to see a vile Talib trolling him.
It would have been much better for Saleh to talk little. He made a lot of enemies, internal and external, through unnecessary statements. And realized very late that Ghani had kept him away from important decision-making and did not even inform him before he fled the country.
Seeing no other choice amidst the fall of Kabul, as he’s described it himself, he contacts Ahmad Masoud in the last moment and heads towards #Panjshir. The Panjshiris were not happy with him due to the betrayal in the elections, but they welcomed him home, graciously.
#Hazaras of #Afghanistan (thread):
They are the country’s 3rd largest ethnic group. There has never been a census based on ethnicity. They are estimated to constitute about 20% of the population, though Hazaras themselves claim between 25-30%. Predominantly #Shia +Sunni, Ismaili
#Hazaras speak Persian (Dari) and are arguably considered to be genetically Turk-Mongol with central Asian features. Predominantly dwelling in central #Afghanistan, called Hazarajat (the land of Hazaras) They also dwell in #Pakistan’s Balochistan and #Iran.
According to some historians “the Hazara people have been living in #Afghanistan for more than 2,000 years.” And their persecution began after the subjugation and incorporation of their land (Hazarajat) by the brutal Afghan king, Amir Abdul Rahman Khan in late 19th century.
So Taliban have blown up slain #Hazara leader Abdul Ali Mazari’s statue in Bamiyan. Last time they executed him, blew up the giant statues of Buddha and all historical and archeological sites.
Too much of ‘general amnesty’.
It’s confirmed that Shaheed Mazari’s statue was blown up and vandalized yesterday evening, right after Taliban spokesman’s assurances of ‘amnesty’ and respect for basic rights of all citizens in a press conference in Kabul. #Hazara#Afghanistan
