We have been closely monitoring the epidemiology outside our province and we are seeing a substantial rise in COVID-19 cases across Canada.
The #DeltaVariant is now the dominant strain in ๐จ๐ฆ & among our prov. cases. This variant is more easily transmitted & causes more severe illness than the orig. COVID strain. In response, most jurisdictions are escalating public health restrictions to curb the spread of the virus.
๐ซK-12 schools: masks are required on school buses as well as in common areas of the school. Students in Grades 4 to 12 are required to wear masks at all times while in school. Staff are also required to wear masks at all times while in school. This is the same as previously.
๐ข Private offices and workplaces that are not open to the public are excluded from the requirement; however they may implement their own masking policies.
๐ง Masks are not required for children under the age of 5, and people with physical or mental health conditions that prevent them from wearing a mask.
The increased transmissibility of the delta variant will require more of us to be fully vaccinated to provide community protection.
๐๐๐ I urge any of you out there who are not fully vaccinated get vaccinated. As always, we will continue to watch the epidemiology and when we are back in a place where we feel it is safe to remove the mandate, we will do so.
Masking will not be forever.
Have a safe and enjoyable weekend. #HoldFast Newfoundland and Labrador. โฅ

โ The entire province will move to Alert Level 2 effective 12:01 am, Saturday, March 27, 2021
Thread โคต
Since we began re-opening we have not seen evidence of increased viral transmission stemming from either the outbreak or new sources. In addition, we have not had any new non-epi-linked cases related to the outbreak in at least 28 days, which is two incubation periods.
Six weeks ago, during the week of February 10-16, we reported 260 new cases. We are down to 1 case over the last week, and now 1 case reported today.
Tomorrow marks one year since my first #covid19nfld briefing. This anniversary gives us pause to reflect on everything that has happened in the last year, both the bad and the good. We have all been impacted by this pandemic, in different ways, some of us much more profoundly.
How it started.... how it's going! (Little throw back to my first COVID update!)
โค Despite the heartache, struggles and disappointments, we also have seen this pandemic bring out some of the best in humanity:
THREAD โ Effective 12:01 am March 13, the Avalon region will move to Alert Level 4 and areas outside the Avalon will move to Alert level 3.
2๏ธโฃ We must be mindful that while our provincial epidemiology is in a very good place, the same cannot be said outside the province. We therefore remain at risk of importation of the virus and the variants of concern that are now in greater circulation.
3๏ธโฃ We saw first-hand how rapidly the B117 variant spread in our province. Thatโs why we must ease restrictions slowly. We will closely monitor the epidemiology as we open to ensure that there is no increased transmission.
#IWD THREAD ๐งต Today is International Womenโs Day, a day that is very near and dear to me personally. Iโd like to acknowledge the remarkable women across our health care system who are working to support our COVID response.
While I may be the face of the response to the pandemic, there are thousands of women across our province who have contributed to Newfoundland and Labradorโs efforts and successes. ๐ฉโโ๏ธ๐ฉโ๐ฌ๐ฉโ๐ซ๐ฎโโ๏ธ๐ฉโ๐ผ
โ๏ธ Remember, we all possess the tools and the ability to protect against this virus and stop the outbreak. The same public health measures we have been practicing throughout the year will protect us now:
๐ท Your non-medical mask is a critical layer of protection for yourself and others.
Wear it whenever you are interacting with people outside your household bubble, not just indoor public spaces.
Your mask should be at least 2โฃ layers, 3โฃ is better.
๐Make sure it fully covers your nose and chin. Do not wear a face shield in place of a mask.
THREAD ๐งต We have received confirmation that the outbreak in the metro area is indeed due to a COVID-19 variant of concern, specifically the B.1.1.7 variant which was first recognized in the UK. This variant is more infectious than the original strain of SARS-CoV-2.
We have seen how rapidly it has spread in facilities elsewhere in the country. We know that if not controlled, it becomes the predominant strain within weeks of first appearance. This is concerning and serious. But we have the ability to overcome it.
We know that our greatest ally is speed. We therefore have to take quick and decisive action to reduce the spread of this variant. I am announcing that, effective immediately, I am introducing special measures orders across the province that will take us back to Alert Level 5 โ ๏ธ
