This weekend I am exploring the coastline from Samut Prakan to Samut Sakhon with my friends @chilipastetour and @DavidLuekens. There's a new road along Sapphasamit Canal that now goes all the way. My map notes for this trip are here: thailandphotomap.com/exploring-the-… #bkkdaytrip #Thailand.
If you switch to a satellite image, you can see that the coastline is mainly fish and shrimp farms. There are not many roads here. This section is actually in Bangkok. Yes, Bangkok has a coastline too in Bang Khun Thian district. #bkkdaytrip #Thailand.
[01] Our first stop on the coastal tour is Phra Samut Chedi. This is the symbol of Samut Province. When it was first built, it used to be on an island on the Chao Phraya River but it’s now on the West bank.

In 1862, Anna Leonowens wrote the following about her first view of Thailand from her ship: On an island there is perhaps the most unique and graceful object of architecture in Siam; shining like a jewel on the broad bosom of the river: paknam.com/tourist-attrac…
Inside one of the buildings at Phra Samut Chedi there is a building with interesting murals on the wall that depict contemporary life from 200 years ago #SamutPrakan #bkkdaytrip #Thailand .
[02] From Phra Samut Chedi you can cross a pedestrian bridge to an island called Pom Phi Sua Samut. There is a fortress here on an islet in the Chao Phraya River opposite Samut Prakan City Hall.

King Rama V ordered ten rear loading guns from W G Armstrong & Co in England in 1892. They were called the “disappearing” guns because they only came out of the pit to fire and then the recoil forced the gun back where it came from. Three of them were put in this fort #bkkdaytrip
[03] Ban Sakhla is an isolated community in Samut Prakan Province surrounded by shrimp and crab farms. There’s a paved road to the town now, but most people still get around by boat. Many of the houses are built on stilts.

📍MAP: goo.gl/maps/FTpMUPvNs… #bkkdaytrip #Thailand
A famous food product for Ban Sakhla are the stretched shrimps. These are both salty & sweet. You can eat head to toe #ThaiFood #Thailand
Our lunch today is at a food shop in Ban Sakhla in Samut Prakan #bkkdaytrip #Thailand
It would be really great to find a homestay in Ban Sakhla and spend the weekend here. It’s a really nice place. Friendly people & good food. But we need to move on. The next stop on our coastal trip is Bangkok! I’m hoping to do at least one boat trip out to sea today #bkkdaytrip.
[04] Can you believe that we are now in #Bangkok? This is Bang Khun Thian district which goes all the way to the sea. There’s a new cycle path here which is a hundred times better than what it was like the last time I visited.

📍MAP: goo.gl/maps/sfR5TPxjY… #bkktrip #Thailand .
You can rent bicycles from the Local Museum of Bang Khun Thian. Cost is only 30 Baht for the day. You don’t need a map as the track to the coast is well marked. Highly recommended.

📍MAP: goo.gl/maps/73L3t9MCf… #bkkdaytrip #Thailand .
To help protect the coastline in Bangkok from erosion, they use these bamboo poles which have proven to be more effective than the concrete poles that they used in the past. They also planted mangrove saplings here which help #bkkdaytrip #Bangkok #Thailand .
The local museum in Bang Khun Thian is open from Wednesday to Sunday. Entry is free. In this photo you can see how narrow Bangkok is (white on the map). On the left in orange is Samut Sakhon and on the right in green is Samut Prakan #Thailand #bkkdaytrip .
[05] One of the latest tourist attractions along the coast in Samut Sakhon is the Red Boardwalk Bridge. This goes out to sea and then runs parallel with the coast for more than 700 meters. Best to go in the late afternoon when it’s cooler.

📍MAP: goo.gl/maps/au5PnSuR5… .
Heading home now after our three province coastal trip. But the way back is blocked by this high tide flood. We are going to have to do a wide diversion which will add 30 minutes to the journey. I’m not going to risk it. Several cars have already broken down.

This morning I visited the new Samut Prakan Immigration office in Bang Phli. It has temporarily moved from Paknam to Thip Nimitra Market (pronounced tip-ni-mit). They will be building a five-storey building on the Paknam waterfront. It will probably take them a few years [THREAD]
[2] Thip Nimitra Market is on Theparak Road opposite Banplee Hospital. It is easy to spot as it is bright orange. Immigration is on the second floor. Just use the stairs in the corner that you can see in this picture.

📍MAP: goo.gl/maps/Vvvm8gPaj…
[3] Samut Prakan Immigration is open from 8:30am to 4:30pm. They are closed for lunch from 12pm to 1pm. The address for 90 day reports is Temporary Service Center, Samutprakan Immigration, Thipnimitra Market Building A, 2nd floor Bangphil Yai, Bangphil District, Samutprakan 10540

😷 I’ve been invited to join an international campaign to research the potential dangers in shops and indoor venues. In this mega THREAD, I will be using a CO2 meter to measure the Covid-19 risks that we all face #Thailand #COVIDisAirborne #โควิดแพร่ทางอากาศ #CovidCO2 #โควิดco2 Image
Measuring the virus in the air is not easy. But CO2 meters recognize exhaled air inside rooms and so is a good proxy for the aerosols that carry the virus. If it’s 1,500 ppm that means 1.5% of the air has been in someone else’s lungs. Today I tested CO2 in three shops.
The first lesson I learned today is that you should be very careful in a vehicle. Anything over 800 ppm is risky if you’re not alone. With recirculating turned on it was 1885 ppm. In a taxi, ask the driver to turn it off or open a window or two #CovidCO2 #โควิดco2 #WearAMask Image

I’ve just come out of a meeting with the Governor & deputy governors of the TAT about the #PhuketSandbox plan. The good news is that it will go ahead as it has been approved in principle by the CCSA. The bad news is that the 7 days is now 14 days before you can visit elsewhere.
I will type up some FAQ about the #PhuketReopening as soon as I get home. The CCSA will have their meeting on Monday to officially approve it. Then the cabinet meeting on Tuesday will rubber stamp it before being published in the Royal Gazette a few days later.
To be clear, vaccinated tourists can fly to Phuket from 1st July without having to do quarantine. They have the freedom of the island. But only the island during the first 14 days. If they want, they can stay for only one week and then fly home. But must stay in SHA+ hotels.

The Department of Tourism, under the Ministry of Tourism & Sports, posted this Infographic on their Facebook yesterday about the plans for the Phuket Sandbox & the so-called Sealed Routes. Unfortunately it contradicts what the TAT are saying about the #PhuketReopening [THREAD]👇
According to the Ministry of Tourism, vaccinated tourists will be able to visit Phuket from 1st July. However, they MUST buy tour packages in advance from tour companies abroad “in order to be able to monitor and control” them. Tourist must also specify where they will go next👇
The Ministry of Tourism also says, after Phuket, tourists can only visit:
1. Krabi - places like Railay Beach & islands like Koh Phi Phi
2. Phang Nga - only Khao Lak
3. Surat Thani - only Koh Samui, Koh Tao, Koh Phangan
4. Chonburi - only Pattaya
5. Chiang Mai - no details yet

Do you want to fly to #Thailand without doing quarantine? This is what we know so far [THREAD]
📌 You must come from a low-medium risk country
📌 You must fly direct to Phuket
📌 After 7 days you can visit the rest of the country
📌 Less than 7 days you must fly out from Phuket
📌 Adults must have Vaccine Certificate
📌 Children 12-18 only need a Rapid Test on arrival
📌 Accompanied children under 12 are exempt
📌 You can only stay in SHA approved hotels
📌 Must do RT-PCR test on Day 4-5 and again on departure
📌 You must fly direct to Phuket. Attached are some examples of airlines doing direct flights. Please note, all flights are subject to change or cancellation. There was talk originally of being able to fly Bangkok and then being escorted to Phuket. But no confirmation of this yet
