FROM THE EXAMINATION OF CONSCIENCE
(according to the Commandments of God)
- 1st COMMANDMENT -

"I am the Lord your God...you shall not have strange gods before me."

1. One sins against this Commandment...

2. by deliberate unbelief, - by indifference towards the true Faith, - by neglecting or disregarding certain articles of the Faith, for instance that of Sacramental Confession, - by presumptuous personal analysing of the mysteries of faith, - by deliberate nourishing of doubts,

3. including spreading those around, - by denial of the Faith through trying either to detach oneself from our Catholic Church, or by being ashamed of her teaching and customs, by not defending her against mockers when it is possible

4. and necessary to do so; yes, even to get a sinister pleasure from listening to God-less talk and to join in, - or by neglecting the exercise of our Catholic religion, e.g. prayer, Sacramental Confession, fasts, because of human respect [fear of what other people might think],

5. - by unnecessary, familiar interaction with unbelievers and heretics, or by deliberate visiting their houses of prayer and listening to their preachings, - by illicit reading and sharing of bad books and writings which attack our Catholic Faith, - by mistrusting God's help

6. and providence, - by despair in spite of God's grace and mercy, - by murmuring against God's designs, complaining and impatience in suffering, - by resistance and dislike against God, and this perhaps even having been outwardly demonstrated in some form,

7. - by ingratitude towards God's generous bounties, - by omitting or negligent execution

8. of one's prayers, especially morning-, midday-, and evening prayers, as well as the grace before and after meals, - through sinful conduct in church, - by desecration of consecrated places or persons, - disrespect against holy relics, images, or customs,

9. - by using or permitting superstitious means or practices, - by fortune-telling, card-reading, or devilish practices attempting to glance into the future, to become rich, etc. (From the German Prayer Book of the Precious Blood of Jesus Christ, 1848)
