Feeling out of the loop on Web 3?

No worries, I've got you covered.

A thread on what it is, what's changing, & why you should care.

(In simple terms) 🧵
To understand where we're going, we need to know where we've been.

Web 1.0 - Built for consumption

Think of the web in this era as a giant "digital library."

Characterized by static web pages, the internet was a place users visited to consume, not create.
Web 2.0 - The "Social Web"

The next evolution of the web has allowed the masses to become active participants.

Creating & sharing content through blogs, social media, and various interactive applications.

In short: Everyone can be an author / editor / distributor.
Web 3.0 - The "Semantic Web"

By leveraging the power of machine learning, AI, & decentralized technologies like blockchain, Web 3 aims to achieve the following:

• No central point of control
• > Interconnectivity of information
• Return of power to the people
Web 3.0 - Terminology

Before we dig in, it's a good idea to familiarize yourself with a few of the common terms used in the cryptocurrency / Web 3.0 world.

I wrote about this a few days ago:
Web 3.0 - Decentralization

This essentially means there is no central point of control.

Middlemen (i.e. banks, governments, social platforms, etc.) are removed from the equation.

The result?

Less censorship, removal of gatekeepers, & a shift toward a truly "free" internet.
•Security & Privacy:

By utilizing blockchain technology, data can be stored in an environment that removes the need for passwords & usernames.

Digital identities will be anonymous & fully encrypted.

Paving the way for the resolution of many privacy concerns that exist today.
Web 3.0 - Interconnetivity

What does it mean when we say "semantic web?"

It's not as complicated as you may think.

Utilizing the power of AI, computers will be able to interpret the semantics (or meaning) of the content on the web.
Instead of just searching for a specific keyword, computers will be able to understand & analyze interactions between users & content.

More importantly, they will understand how these interactions connect to one another.

Thus providing a more personalized experience.
In 1999, Tim Berners-Lee (inventor of the World Wide Web) described it as follows:
Web 3.0 - Power to the people

Web 3 has also been described as the "permissionless" web.

As noted above, the idea here is that users and content creators will be able to participate in applications at will.

Without the permission of a governing body or controlling 3rd party.
Web 3.0 - Want to learn more?

Lucky for us, there is no shortage of experts willing to share their knowledge about the emergence of Web 3.0

Frankly, these folks know a lot more about this than me.

Here are 3 of the best: 👇🏻

There are currently over 1.86 Billion websites.

Few provide any real value.

Here are 7 that do: 🧵
1/ Attend the Ivy League:

Always thought it would be cool to go to an Ivy League school?

Here's your chance.

Free lecture notes, exams, and videos from MIT.

2/ Millions of books: Available for free.

Booklists seem to be all the rage recently on Twitter.

(I'm guilty of posting a couple myself)

Instead of a list, here's a link to a library full of them.

The goal:
"A web page for every book ever published."

Life:

In a blink it can be over.

None of us are promised anything.

Go do what you want to do. Everyone has reasons that they put it off, whatever "it" is.

The real truth is we're scared. Scared to fail, scared to try, scared of what others might think.

In the end...
None of that matters.

You'll look back on your life with regret not for the things you tried that didn't work, but for the things you never tried at all.

Take the risk. It's worth it.

Barriers such as time, money, job, family, etc. are only barriers if you allow them to be.
Don't have the time or money to go all-out on your dream project?

Fine. Whoever said anything was wrong with starting small?

Some of the largest corporations in the world were founded in bedrooms, basements, and garages.

You just have to want it more.

Think crypto is confusing?

You're right.

Let's make it easier.

Here's Crypto Terminology 101: 🧵
Altcoin:

Any coin that's not #Bitcoin

Ether (#ETH) is the second most popular coin overall and the most well-known Altcoin.

Ether is the native cryptocurrency on the Ethereum blockchain.

There are thousands of other altcoins, but for now, this is the one to know.
Bitcoin: (#BTC)

The first decentralized digital currency.

Launched in 2009 by an unknown person or organization known only as "Satoshi Nakamoto."

It is the most famous, and most valuable cryptocurrency.

1/ "Tell me about a time you had to make a decision, without all of the information required."

There always seems to be an abundance of information, except when you need it most.

The best people are able to analyze the available data, weigh potential outcomes, & make a call.
2/ "Is it better to have a job done perfectly, and late, or good but on time?"

Paralysis by perfection is an affliction we all suffer from at times.

I've seen a lot of book lists making the rounds on Twitter lately...

Thought it'd be nice if they were all in one place.

So here they are: 10 of the best book lists on Twitter 📚
1/ @AlexAndBooks_

Alex is obviously an expert on books, I mean c'mon. His Twitter handle is "Alex And Books"

The list: "20 Books so good you'll want to read them twice."
2/@RyanHoliday

A personal favorite of mine, Ryan is perhaps the most prolific reader I am aware of.

In his own words, he states, "I read a lot, well, because it's my job."

42 books Ryan says will change your life for the better:
