I had some learning budget to spend so I bought some books! I normally read on Kindle but thought I'd get a selection of classics I'd already read as well as some inspiring books I hadn't. Looking forward to diving back in, learning & relearning 🧵
Radical Candor by @kimballscott - the classic book about being a good boss by caring personally and challenging directly .. You can check out my podcast episode with Kim here oneknightinproduct.com/kim-scott
Utopia for Realists by @rcbregman - not read this before but seems like an interesting proposition! Always interesting to see how we might use tech for good
Business Adventures by John Brooks - twelve classic tales from the world of Wall St .. always good to see what lessons the past can teach us about how we might avoid those mistakes in the future
The Personal MBA by @joshkaufman .. I've read it before but it's invaluable for me to have a good business principles book given that I come from a software development background
How the Mighty Fall by @level5leaders .. another book on how companies fail and what some do to succeed. Again, always interesting to see what lessons we can learn from the past to avoid it becoming our future
Obviously Awesome! The de facto product positioning bible by @aprildunford ... I've read this loads but now I can leaf through whenever I want. Check out my interview with April here oneknightinproduct.com/april-dunford
The First Minute by @CMFenning .. I've always been an anxious speaker and have been accused of being verbose in the past! I've worked hard to improve for presentations, webinars & podcast and looking forward to reading this one
15 Commitments of Conscious Leadership by @KaleyKlemp et al ... Another book on leadership skills! Critical to always challenge yourself to be a better leader & continuously improve working culture
The Presentation Coach by @GDPresCoach ... Again, never been a natural presenter but I'm doing my best, especially as I've got more speaking engagements coming up and I don't want to be mumbling along!
Escaping the Build Trap by @lissijean .. a classic book about getting out of the feature factory and making good product decisions. I loved this book first time I read it and looking forward to dipping back in again
The Art of Product Management by @RichMironov .. I've always gotten a lot of value from Rich's musings and it's great to have some of them in the same place. You can check out my interview with Rich here: oneknightinproduct.com/rich-mironov
The Language of Leaders by @kevinmurray .. another book about leadership and presentation skills, developing that executive presence. Another thing I try to relentlessly work on so looking forward to this
The Lean Startup by @ericries ... Obviously I've read it before but not for a while. A good excuse to get into arguments with stakeholders about what an MVP really is!
Empowered and Inspired by @cagan (& @chris_svpg) ... They need no introduction and I've read them loads. I got the hardback editions so I can slam them down on the CEO's desk and make a loud noise 🙃

Check out my interview with Marty Cagan here: oneknightinproduct.com/marty-cagan
No Rules Rules by @reedhastings & @ErinMeyerINSEAD .. been meaning to read this for a while! Another book on workplace culture and doing things more effectively.

Relatedly, check out my episode with @gibsonbiddle, former VP Product at Netflix here:

oneknightinproduct.com/gibson-biddle
How I Built This by @guyraz .. another book documenting the paths to success of some of the most successful companies in the world. Again, always good to see what happened behind the scenes and what we might do to try to emulate that success
Your Next Five Moves by @patrickbetdavid ... A book on strategy. As product managers & leaders it's our job to think a few steps ahead and I'm really looking forward to diving into this book to get some insight
And finally Eat Their Lunch by @iannarino .. a book about selling your product and beating your competitors. GTM execution is often neglected by product managers but we need to be able to sell what we make!
Looking forward to digging into all of these (and maybe I'll even interview some more of the authors one day 🙃)

Someone asked me about my #podcast audio editing process, so in honour of the 0% of people who said they come here for podcasting content, here's a 🧵 about my approach. I often get comments about how good the podcast sounds, so hopefully this is helpful! #podnation #podernfamily
I use @zencastr to record - this gives me separated tracks in high quality mp3 (wav would be better, maybe I'll upgrade one day). I use Audacity to edit. There have been concerns about T&C on newer Audacity editions - I'm still on 2.4.2 - it works fine
So I take my separated tracks and load them into Audacity. First job is to remove background noise, compress (make the loud bits & quiet bits closer in volume) and then loudness normalise to make sure the whole volume is the same "perceived loudness" - so go ahead and do that

It's my podcast's birthday! 1 year ago I pressed Publish on @podbeancom for the first time. 77 episodes and 20K downloads later, phew! I've met so many great people, had so many great conversations. Thanks to all who have listened or taken part!

A few reflections 🧵
Starting a podcast was not a natural thing for me to do. I hate how I sound, and I don't think I ever fully recovered from a bout of Bell's Palsy. But I wanted to accomplish a few things and it seemed like, in true #prodmgmt fashion, I should test & learn
1. I wanted to learn from other product managers. Product management can be a lonely profession and you can get stuck in your own head sometimes. My job wasn't going wonderfully at the time (have since switched) and I wanted to connect with other product managers & leaders

A lot of hustle conversation going on right now and it reminds me of this chat with Polina Marchenko of SIDE PRJCT about how she burned out, got back up and did things differently & more sustainably

#prodmgmt #startups #hustle
And of course @randfish wrote a whole book ("Lost & Founder") in a similar vein, about how the tech bro VC growth at all costs culture pulled him apart and made him want to do it differently
You can check out a Polina's episode here
