How to go from broke to middle class in America (without becoming a musician, a professional athlete, or selling drugs):
Middle Class.

What does that mean?

We're going to call it $50,000 cash in your bank account.

The goal of this thread is to take YOU from broke to $50,000 cash in your bank account.

Let's start:
Accept that other people have a head start on you in life.

Life is not fair and it never will be.

It doesn't matter. You will catch up.
Be patient.

If you get rich quick, you will become broke again just as fast.

Most lottery winners go broke after winning the lottery because they do not know what they are doing.

Going from broke to middle class is going to be hard and it is going to take a while.

Patience.
Everyone who's broke wants to be rich.

Get to middle class first.

Then you can figure out how to be rich.
To go from broke to middle class you need just three skills.

1) Know-how in an industry that isn't going away
2) Sales
3) Basic math
What industries aren't going away?

- Law
- Computer programming
- Welding
- Plumbing
- Electrical
- Clothing
- Medical
- Real estate
- And many more...

Pick one that interests you.

Pick one that you think you would be good at.
What industries are going away?

- Gas-powered cars (because of electric cars)
- Department stores (because of buying online)
- Any job that can be done by people overseas (because they are cheaper)
- Any job that can be done by a robot (because they are cheaper)

Avoid these.
Now you need to combine this know-how with sales.

Sales means convincing other people to buy what you are selling.

It is a skill. You need to develop it if you want to make more money.
Most people do not get good at sales because they are scared of being rejected.

When someone tells you "no" it hurts.

Do not be afraid. They cannot hurt you by saying "no".
The more times people tell you "no", the less it will bother you.

So practice. Ask a pretty girl or guy out. Ask another. And another.

Sell. Call people you do not know on the phone. Ask them to buy what you got.

Keep doing it until it stops hurting.

It will stop hurting.
To become successful in sales, you also need to understand what your customer wants.

Think about things from their viewpoint.

What would you want if you were them?

Asking this question is the other key to sales.
What were the top two skills you needed to go from broke to middle class?

1) Know-how in an industry that isn't going away
2) Sales

You need both. Why?

If you are an amazing programmer, you must sell your interviewer to get a job.

You must sell your boss for a raise.
If you are an amazing salesman, but you do not know your industry, you will not be able to sell to anyone who knows the industry.

Because they will know you do not know what you're talking about.

So, you need both:

1) Know-how in an industry that isn't going away
2) Sales
Let's talk about #3 basic math skills.

Math is scary for a lot of people because they are bad at it.

Anyone can learn basic math skills.

It just takes practice.
You need to be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide.

And you need to be able to use decimals like 0.25, fractions like 1/4, and percentages like 25%.

Money is math.

If you want $50,000 you need to be able to add up that money, subtract it, etc.
You also cannot sell without being comfortable with numbers.

There is no shortcut here.

You just have to work at it.

Watch videos online in your spare time to improve your math skills.
There's one more skill you need to succeed.

Grammar and spelling.

But don't worry this one is easy.

Download a program on your computer that corrects your grammar.

Search "grammar correcting software" on google and you will find many options.
Let's summarize. To get to that $50k you need:

1. Know-how in an industry that is not going away
2. Sales
3. Basic math

(And grammar software on your phone or computer)

Start working on these skills now.

You'll be a triple threat.

But even a triple threat needs a job.
To get a job you need to do three things:

1. Write a resume
2. Apply to as many GOOD jobs as you can (do not forget to only apply to jobs in industries that are not going away)
3. Pass an interview
1. Write a resume

Use your grammar software.

Your resume should have no typos or misspellings.

Your resume should not have any gaps.

If you write 2014-2016 McDonalds and then 2018-2021 Wendy's, you need to write something for 2017.

Do not lie. It will hurt you later.
For each job you've ever had write a short description.

You are selling so think about what the person who is reading the resume would want to read.

Simple. To the point. No typos. No misspellings. Tell them why they should hire you.

Again, do not lie. It will hurt you later.
If you have a weird name, make it your middle name.

Pick a new simple first name.

It makes things simpler for you and when you get hired, you can show them your real name on your ID.

Keep it simple and easy for everyone.

If you have a weird name, you understand.
When you introduce yourself to new people, use your new simple first name.

You can always tell people your real birth name later.

You can tell them when you have $50,000.
If you have a felony and went to prison, put it on your resume.

Why?

Some companies won't hire felons. So if you tell them early, you will avoid wasting your time.

Good companies will see your resume and think "this person is honest and has put his felony behind him."
2. Apply to as many GOOD jobs as you can.

Try to find a job with a company that will let you learn or move up.

You can read reviews of companies online to figure that out by searching "company employee reviews"
Do not give up when you do not get an interview.

Just keep trying.

If you apply to 10x as many jobs as others, you will get a good job.

Guaranteed.
Every time you get rejected ask yourself "why did they reject me?"

After you answer this question, change your resume or change the way you apply to jobs to fix that problem.

There are lots of ways to do things.

It is okay to not get it right the first time.

Try again.
3. Pass an interview

If your resume is good, you will get interviews.

You have been practicing your sales skills. Use them in the interview.
Before the interview, learn about the job and the company you are applying for.

What does the company do?

What will you do for the company?

Why do you want this job?

People who do not know the answers to these questions do not get hired.

It shows you do not care.
Do not lie in the interview.

It is okay to say "I do not know."

If you lie and get hired, you may get found out and fired later.

That will set you back.

You have worked too hard to go backwards.

Do not lie.

Be on time for the interview.

And do not miss a single one.
If you do not get the job, it is okay.

Try again somewhere else.

Most people give up.

The key to success in life is not giving up.

If you apply to 10x as many places as everybody else, you are sure to get the job you want.
You have a job now.

But that's not enough.

You need to figure out how you can get paid more.

Two ways to do that:

1) Get a raise
2) Get a better job
While you are at your new job you need to continue to improve your know-how, sales skills, and basic math.

You can use your sales skills to ask for a raise after 6 months.

Think of why you deserve a raise from your boss's perspective.

Then ask.

It's okay if they say "no".
If they do say "no" ask them why.

Ask them what you need to do to get a raise.

Do it.

If you do it and they do not give you a raise, they are not a good company.

Do not make your boss look bad.

Keep the job until you find a new one.

Don't quit.
You can interview for other jobs while you work at your current one.

Yes it will make you tired to get home and apply to more jobs after a hard day's work, but it is what you must do.

Just do it.
It is easier to get a job when you already have one for a couple of reasons.

1. You will have more confidence
2. Employers will think you are a hard worker for having a job and looking for new work at the same time.
If you have take time off to interview, just tell the company what you are doing.

Do not say you are sick.

You may need a "reference" from them later.

What is a reference?

It's a letter from the company saying that you are a good employee.

Be honest. It will help you.
Let's take a step back now.

You are working on know-how, sales, basic math.

You have a job.

You are making more money by asking your job for more or by finding new jobs that pay you more.

This is great.

But it's not enough to get to $50,000 in your bank account.
You have to get better.

Every single day.

That's why you must keep working on your know-how, sales, and math skills.

This is how you will earn more money.
Just think about that.

If you get better every fucking day.

You are going to make more money.

Get better every fucking day.

Do it.

I believe in you.

Everyone does.

Do it.
Now let's talk about how to get better every single day.

Find a mentor.

They should be old and retired.

It is best if they have experience in the industry you want know-how for.

Meet with them every 2 weeks.
How to find a mentor?

Search "SCORE mentor" online.

There is a government program where old retired people give younger people advice.

Listen. Do not be offended. They can teach you a lot.

If you do not like your mentor, get a new one.

Keep trying until you get a good one.
Most mentors are old white people.

You are probably young compared to them and you might not be white.

It does not matter.

Their culture is different from yours maybe.

Accept that and move on.

You can learn from people who do not look like you.
To build up your know-how, follow the right people on Twitter.

There are people in every industry on Twitter.

Click the replies of the tweets to find more people.

Search your industry and you will find these people.
Do not be afraid to ask dumb questions.

If you do not know how something works, ask.

Someone will explain it to you.

Every day you need to learn things in this way.

Ask dumb questions.

It's okay if people think you are dumb because you are getting wiser every day.
How to improve your sales skills?

Read "Influence" by Cialdini and "How to Win Friends and Influence People" by Carnegie.

(I am not getting paid for recommending those books)

If you see a word in the book you do not understand, search the definition online.
Combine book reading with practice.

Read books and then use what you learned in the book.

If the book says "people like buying what everyone else wants to buy" try to sell someone something by saying "everyone wants this right now".

Practice, but do not lie in sales.
You need to work out.

It will give you confidence (which helps in sales).

It will make you healthy, which means you will think faster.

Don't spend money on a gym.

Search "body weight exercises" like pushups online and watch videos.
Find something heavy and use that as a weight.

You do not need dumbbells.

It can be a chair.
Every night you need to get 8 hours of sleep.

This will help you think faster and better.

It will help you remember all the things you are learning every day.

Search online about how to do this.
You need to have a better diet.

Do not eat at restaurants more than 1 time per month.

You need to save that money.

Most restaurant food is not healthy.

They use lots of oil and sugar.

Eat food that your grandparents ate.
Fixing your diet will help you save money so you can get to $50,000 faster.

Also, it will help you think better.

Try different foods to see what foods help you be at your best.
Become friends with people you want to be like.

Most broke people hang out with other broke people.

Most broke people have bad habits.

Stop hanging out with them.

You're going to have $50,000 soon.

Hang out with people who were raised middle class.
You can meet these people by going to meetups for your industry.

Search online and go.

Use your sales skills to make friends.

Ask dumb questions to learn.

If you help other people they will help you back.

Maybe you can get a better job and earn more money in this way.
YOU NEED TO SAVE AS MUCH MONEY AS YOU CAN.

No restaurant food.

Small apartment.

If you live with other people, make sue they are good people.

You do not want to live with people who smoke, do drugs, or do not work hard.

Live with your grandmom if you have to.
You may need to move.

If you are living in a bad area without jobs or full of bad people, go somewhere else.

That can be a different neighborhood.

Or it can be a different city.

Yes that is scary.

But, you can do it.
Look for cities with low unemployment (this means the city has more jobs than it has people) and cities that are growing fast.

There are lists of these cities online.

Some cities will pay you to move there because they do not have enough people for the jobs.
Sometimes, bad things happen. It is bad luck.

You get a parking ticket because you made a mistake.

You did not get the job you deserved.

Someone stole your phone.

Do not blame others.

Blame yourself.

Ask yourself "How can I avoid this next time?"

Then do that.
If you get pulled over by cops, you can get a costly ticket.

If no one else is around, BE RESPECTFUL but do not say you made a mistake.

"Everything you say can and will be held against you."

If people are around when you are stopped by cops, say nothing.
If you get in a fight, do not punch first.

Avoid fights.

But if it has to happen, make sure you are second to hit.

Then you can say "it was self-defense."

You have been working out.

You will be fine.
Let's get back to positivity for a minute.

1. know-how in an industry that is not going away
2. sales
3. basic math
4. good job that you use to make more and more money
5. you are getting better every day
6. you are sleeping, eating well, and working out

You are at your best.
But success is not just about what you do.

It is also about what you do not do.

Now let's talk about things you must not do if you want to stop being broke and get to middle class with $50,000 in your bank account.
Stop smoking marijuana.

It is expensive, it wastes your time, and makes you think slower.

If you smoke marijuana to destress, stop doing that.
Life is stressful. Being around other people can be stressful. If you use marijuana (or alcohol) to make it less stressful you are just teaching your body to rely on marijuana.

Stop. Right now.

It will be very hard at first, but the stress will go down over time.
Do not drink often.

At company events, have one drink, never more.

Alcohol will make you tired the next day. You will forget what you learned that day. It is a waste of time.

You do not need it.
If you are depressed do not take medicine.

You can fix that by working out, eating right, getting sun, and seeing your life improve every day.

Just try it.

When your brain says "no...I don't want to do that" tell your brain to shut up and just do it.

It works.
If you are anxious do not take medicine.

You will become dependent on the medicine.

Let's say you are afraid of snakes.

Every time you see a snake you get really anxious and nervous.

If I threw a snake on you (don't worry, it's not poisonous) you would scream.
What if I threw that snake on you 10 times.

100 times?

By the 100th time would you really be afraid of snakes if the snake wasn't poisonous?

No you would not.
Are you afraid of public speaking?

Do it.

You'll be sweating. You'll want to shit your pants.

But every time you do it, it will get better.

You can overcome your anxiety by touching it, not avoiding it.

Search "toastmasters" to improve your public speaking.
(I do not get money from Toastmasters, it's just what I personally used to overcome my fear).

If you are nervous and anxious. Do not smoke weed. Do not drink alcohol. Do not take medication.

You can fix it the natural way.

Medication can screw up your brain permanently.
Do not EVER take any other drugs.

Heroin, meth, cocaine, crack can ruin your life with one taste.

If someone offers you these things and you want to be liked be them, cancel that thought right now.

They are not your friend, they are your enemy.
Again, a single taste of any of these drugs and you can spend the rest of your life on the streets.

Your life will be over.
Stop playing video games.

It's a waste of your time.

Unless you are the best in the world at the game, no one will respect you for it.

Use that time to better yourself instead.

Read books, solve crossword puzzles, play chess, do sudoku, learn to code.

No video games.
Stop showing up late.

Here is how to do this.

Before you are supposed to be some place, check on a map app how long it will take to get there.

Then add 20%.

So if the app says 20 minutes, add 25% which is 5 minutes.

Leave your house 25 minutes before the meeting time.
Temporarily stop spending money on things for Instagram and other people.

Buy yourself one set of nice clothes that you can wear to an interview and to a party.

One set.

You can wear it on Monday and then wear again on Tuesday.

One pair of shoes.

That's all you need.
We all have an urge to impress other people.

You need to ignore that until you get to $50,000.

When you get to there, you can start posting on Instagram.

Don't fake it until you make it.

Just make it.

Be patient.
If you are in shape, clothes will not matter as much.

You can still go on dates before you make your $50,000 but it will be hard.

Whatever you do, do not get pregnant or get anyone else pregnant.
If you are a guy and you are having sex, pull out or use a condom.

Immediately after, clean up and flush it down the toilet.

The government gives women more money for every child they have.

You are going places, so you wouldn't be a bad father to have.
If you get someone else pregnant, you will owe them alimony.

The mother of your child will take part of your income every single month.

It will be very difficult for you to get to middle class if you let this happen, so don't.

You can have kids later if you are a guy.
Stop lying altogether.

Do not lie to other people.

And do not lie to yourself.

If you do not lie to yourself, you will improve yourself.

If you do not lie to others, it is hard, but better for you in the long run.

You will respect yourself. And others will respect you more.
Do what you say you are going to do.

You want other people to trust you.

People give chances to people that they trust.

If you say you are going to do it. You do it. Even when it is hard.
Do not take any jobs or opportunities that are based on diversity or you being broke.

You are going to do everything the hard way.

You are going to earn it.

It doesn't matter that other people had a head start.

You are going to catch up.
Most charities are as much about the people who donate and run the charities as they are about the people they give money and opportunities to.

That money is like a drug.

Do not get hooked.

You can succeed without it.
No FUCKING debt.

No credit card.

No leasing a nice car.

No student loans.

Nothing.

No debt.
Debt is a prison.

If you have it right now, pay it off as soon as you can.

Free yourself from that prison.
Credit cards charge big fees to give you money.

Buy everything with cash or a debit card instead (make sure you do not spend more than you have!).

Do not lease a car. Buy an old Japanese car in cash if you need a car. Get rides and use public transport until then.
College will not make you money today.

Even if you get a scholarship, that is 4 years that you will waste earning nothing.

College does not teach real world skills.

A diploma is just a way of showing employers that you are smart and came from a good background.
If you are smart enough to get a scholarship, you are smart enough to start making serious money right now.

You do not need college.

Night classes are okay if your employer pays for them.

Everything else can be learned online for free or from books at the library.
Do not make investments until you have $50,000.

You do not know what you are doing yet.

Just focus on building your skills, learning to sell, math skills, and earning money at your job.

You can make investments later.

First you must go from broke to middle class.
Cut your hair.

If you have a stupid long hair haircut, cut it.

Get a cheap barber to do it or have a friend do it to save time and money.

You can have a nice haircut later.

You just need to look clean right now.
This thread is how to go from broke to middle class (without becoming a musician, a professional athlete, or selling drugs).

Why?

Because very few people become successful doing those things.
In a big city like New York, maybe every 3 years, one person can become a successful musician.

At the same time, 10s of 1000s of people can become successful electricians, plumbers, programmers, paralegals etc.

Especially if they can sell.
Same thing is true for professional athletes.

If you are as talented as Lebron James, do it.

If you are not, follow the advice here.
Do not EVER sell drugs.

If you get caught, it will be so hard for you to catch up.

Do not listen to rap songs.

Selling drugs is not fun.

It is stressful and hard.

You constantly have to worry about being killed or the police.
Getting to $50,000 is going to be stressful and hard, but at least you don't have. to worry about the police or something killing you.

Stay away from that shit.
All you need to do is to get better every day, one step at a time.

You cannot do all the things in this thread at one time.

You will go crazy.

Take it slow and when you look back, you will be amazed at how far you have come.

Good luck.

You don't fucking need it.

Prediction: the US is going to economic war with China

Short thread on my thinking re: this video

tiktok.com/@financeyujie/…
1. She mentions that power has been cut in Guangdong and Jiangsu in Autumn, which is past peak power usage (for southern Jiangsu anyways) as Guangdong is pretty warm, they spend more power on A/C than heating. AFAIK power has not been cut in Shandong and north.
2. To me that indicates that it has nothing to do with a shortage. And in fact she says it has nothing do with a shortage (this woman who is pretty hot imo does not strike me as being unaffiliated with the government). She says it is 3 things:

Can a country become sustainably rich without a sizable manufacturing base?

Ways to get rich:

- resource extraction
- tourism
- financial services
- service outsourcing
- software
- manufacturing
- something else I’m missing?

1/n
There’s something special about manufacturing. It taps into all of your human capital. Compare it to tourism. Your people oriented people work the hotels and restaurants. You get a small construction industry, a bit of marketing but that’s it.

2/n
Whereas for manufacturing, your people oriented people do sales, some people can work the plants, you can have designers, managers (yes you get these with tourism too), software, and construction. All your human capital gets tapped.

Huge bear market in office RE (adjusted for inflation and covered land plays) coming.

It’s not even arguable otherwise. Let’s move on. We’re done.

What is interesting is the follow on effects!

1/2
- less commuting will hurt non-destinational retail eg “never mind picking that up on the way back from work.”
- what happens to downtown office cores?
- what do we do with these buildings?
- do homes need to be redesigned bigger?

What else? It’s pretty interesting!

2/3
Just so we’re clear, I am not saying no one will go to an office. I am saying a many fewer people will. I don’t know what the percentage is but the fewer people go to the office the less of a benefit you get from going yourself so WFH has a negative network effect.

The worst experience I've ever had on Twitter!

A lot of people have been asking me what happened, so here's a 🧵of how fucked up Twitter can get, not only for you, but for your family.
It all started at dinner when I decided to calculate the living expenses of someone I know.

I was amazed at how high they were considering how poorly he lived for what he was spending.

I thought to myself, "hmm this is interesting, I'll tweet it."

It went viral.

Most people didn't understand my point (which was not well articulated) and thought that I was suggesting that spending over $1mm/year was not extravagant.

And the guillotines came out.

Economies and diseconomies of scale in management.

0 Employees.

With no one to manage, there is no one with whom to communicate. You will never be more efficient.

1/n
1 employee.

You now must communicate what, how, and why to the employee you manage. Efficiency falls from this communication. However, accountability is high because everything that happens in the department can be attributed to the one person.

2/n
2 employees.

Huge dropoff in efficiency, because, not only do the two employees need to communicate between themselves and you, but you need to know who is responsible for what. You must observe closely to reward fairly or no one will work hard.
