Let’s talk about the shock families face when they begin the search for #ChildCare. 🧵
#ChildCare will likely cost more than their monthly mortgage or rent, and more than one year of tuition at a state public university. Most families have no option to lower costs. That's just affordability, though. What about access?
About half of families live in #ChildCare deserts, with no safe or affordable options. When they do find child care, many have to be put on a wait list – sometimes it can be 18 months long. For parents without #PaidLeave, this isn't realistic. And what about quality of care?
Early educators and #ChildCare workers are primarily women ( and women of color), are among the lowest paid workers in EVERY state and experience poverty almost 8 times higher than k-8 teachers. More on that here from @CSCCEUCB: cscce.berkeley.edu/workforce-inde…
The research clearly shows early educators do not make a livable wage, rely on assistance, and usually have second jobs just to survive. That means #ChildCare is not affordable or accessible to people returning to work - and isn't sustainable for the child care providers.
Essentially, parents can’t afford to pay, workers can’t afford to stay. There must be a better way. #ChildCare
That better way? The #BuildBackBetter agenda, which guarantees #ChildCare assistance for eligible kids, better wages for early educators, free #UniversalPreschool for 3&4 year olds, and more.

Today Senate Republicans chose to stand against our democracy and embolden the forces working to limit voting rights, interfere with vote counting and even manipulate the outcome of elections. aft.org/press-release/…
In a true democracy, we get to pick the people who represent us—they don’t get to pick the voters. Their inaction sends the message that it’s OK to pick and choose who can vote and whose votes can be counted. aft.org/press-release/…
Our responsibility as citizens is not just to vote but to stand up for the very representative systems on which our republic was founded. That means ensuring everyone who is eligible can vote and every vote is counted. aft.org/press-release/…
I continued our #Back2School tour in Scranton today. @sftlocal1147 organized two different community events.
At the first event, we gave out books and school supplies, children had face painting and games. The joy for #BAck2School was clear.
I especially loved that both events had vaccine clinics. Free vaccines and information on the vaccines for parents and eligible students. #VaccinesAreSafe
With the Delta variant spreading, we must do everything possible to keep students, educators & communities safe. Thank you @SquawkCNBC for having me on today to talk about #Back2School.
Safety needs to be the North Star of our #Back2School plans, and we should be working with employers on vaccine policies in the workplace, so workers have a voice in that decision making.
Kids under 12 can't get vaccines yet, and the Delta variant is very transmissible. We need to be in school with students, but we need to be safe. The safest way to do that is with vaccines, and the second safest way is with masking.
There has been an overwhelming amount of both COVID and vaccine misinformation being peddled and it is putting lives at risk. Let’s debunk a few of these myths and quell some fears! 🧵
Bad actors have been saying the COVID–19 vaccine will do everything from government tracking to DNA alterations. All it does is tell what’s already there how to fight back against this virus. studio.twitter.com/library/3_1423…
A lot of child bearing people have voiced concerns about the vaccine and how it affects us reproductively. Luckily, the science has shown that those currently or trying to get pregnant are a-okay to get vaccinated! studio.twitter.com/library/3_1423…
First, in the era of school shootings, it’s in really bad taste for Don Jr. to attack teachers on front of a wall full of guns. It’s gross. It feels like a threat in this climate. And right on the heels of the Parkland anniversary.
Second, while his father did NOTHING to help us, we’ve fought for safe reopening of schools since April. His dad’s administration gave no guidance on reopening, didn’t track COIVD in schools nationally, and interfered with the CDC.
Now we’re working across the country to make sure we can put the safeguards in place to reopen safely. I wrote about it again today. aftvoices.org/a-road-map-to-…
We have always been able to depend on @AFTWV to fight for the future #WVChildrenDeserve. And while we will face challenges over the next few months, I know that by working together, we’ll prevail in the long term.
Right now, WV GOP lawmakers are working to continue the DeVos legacy of undermining public schools using charter schools, vouchers, union busting, and more. But we cannot lose hope and we cannot give up. #WVChildrenDeserve better.
