Last Wednesday, Priti Patel said people crossing the Channel “are not genuine asylum seekers” & are only making the journey to live in UK hotels.

But this is simply impossible to know: anyone arriving by boat can claim asylum, & applications take months or even years to process.
On 7th September, @SkyNews said "the total number of people who have crossed the UK aboard small boats this year is more than 12,500."

On 27th September, @BBCNews claimed that "at least 17,063 people have crossed in small boats in 2021 compared to just over 8,460 last year."
Today (2nd November) the Daily Mail claimed "a total of 19,741 migrants have made the crossing so far this year", while the Telegraph went with "the number of Channel migrants reaching the UK in small boats has hit a record 20,000".
Priti Patel claimed that in "the last year, 70% of individuals on small boats are single men who are effectively economic migrants. They are not genuine asylum seekers."

But as I've said, this is purely speculative, & simply impossible to know until applications are processed.
While Patel stated 70% "are not genuine asylum seekers", the Government's own statistics show that 63% of all asylum seekers who received a decision in the first three months of this year were granted protection, & this figure is before successful appeals are factored in.
Around 60% of asylum seekers arrive via unauthorised (but perfectly legal if claiming asylum) means such as small boats, & 98% of them claim asylum.

The total number of migrants arriving by this route during 2018 was 297.

So why the dramatic increase?
We can't be certain, but we know that seaborne crossings aboard small boats were rare before November 2018.

More commonly, refugees & migrants stowed away aboard trains, trucks or ferryboats, a technique that has become more difficult in recent years as searches intensified.
Consequently, prices charged by smugglers for illegal rides across the Channel in lorries, trains & ferries have risen sharply.

Rumours that entering & claiming asylum in the UK would become more difficult once Brexit goes into effect circulated in migrant encampments in France.
As ever, there is a great deal of inaccurate, speculative & deliberately misleading & often inflammatory misinformation & rhetoric in circulation, much of it coming from Priti Patel, because she is an opportunist & the Govt know that it plays extremely well with their voter base.
While the numbers are undeniably high, the reasons for the increase are unclear, unevidenced, & unproven. But we DO know that once asylum is claimed, people arriving by boat are protected by international law as legitimate asylum seekers, no matter what *anyone* says or believes.
The pejorative phrase "illegal immigrant" or just "illegals" is used quite widely nowadays, joining the terms ‘migrant’, ‘refugee’ & ‘asylum seeker’, which are not well understood, & often used interchangeably, despite meaning very different things.

redcross.org.uk/stories/migrat…
It's embarrassing & shameful & it speaks volumes about our news media & politicians, that swathes of British adults STILL don't know the differences between refugees, asylum seekers, & migrants.

So here's an easy to understand #THREAD spelling it out:

threadreaderapp.com/thread/1448659…
Finally, while all people making the dangerous channel crossing should be treated with compassion, & must be treated lawfully, some on the left fail to accept that it *can* be problematic for *some* people - especially those living in areas taking high numbers of asylum seekers.
While some people are undoubtedly racist, & have abhorrent views about both legitimate asylum seekers & migrants more generally, there are also decent people who have legitimate concerns eg around housing asylum seekers when they are struggling to gain decent housing themselves.

Our PM is a populist nationalist liar, a corrupt opportunist charlatan, a bigoted antidemocratic cheat & a regressive global embarrassment who serves the interests of a cabal of rich disaster capitalists & has overseen 140,000 mostly completely avoidable deaths - so far.

And if you're not extremely concerned about the parlous state of British society & democracy, you're really not paying attention:

In August, Boris Johnson was widely reported to have said he's giving up drinking alcohol until Christmas.

But there's already been much speculation about whether or not Boris Johnson turned up drunk for the #COP26 photoshoot, after he had to be helped up the stairs.

#THREAD
We were told in multiple media outlets that good old Boris Johnson was 'giving up' alcohol 'in solidarity with his pregnant wife Carrie', vowing not to have another drink until Christmas, when their second baby is due.

Here he is "not drinking" on Budget day last week:
Of course, Boris Johnson has LOTS of form about breaking promises & lying: it's normal for good old Boris to lie, mislead & cheat - it's just who he is!

In 2019 he vowed not to drink booze until 'Brexit was sorted' - which he immediately reneged on.

Interesting article on Nadine Dorries, who argued against then voted against gay marriage, dismissing it as a policy pursued “by the metro elite gay activists”. She has since said that her opposition to the gay marriage bill was her “biggest regret”.

theguardian.com/politics/2021/…
She once claimed that a political blog she kept was “70% fiction”, after the MPs standards watchdog criticised it for potentially misleading constituents about how much time she spent in her constituency. A week later she stated that the blog was accurate.
In her conference attack on the @BBC, nepotist & hypocrit Dorries claimed that it was full of people “whose mum & dad worked there”.

But in 2013 she faced criticism for employing two of her three daughters as staff in her parliamentary office at a cost of around £80,000.

Hi @BBC @Channel4 @ITV @netflix.

Tufton Street free-market think tanks are extraordinarily influential, with very strong links to the UK Govt & to a global network of many of the richest & most powerful people & organisations on earth, yet we rarely - if ever - hear about them.
Imho, Tufton St would make a fantastic drama, a fabulous satirical comedy, a worthy investigative special, or especially a feature-length documentary.

It has the ingredients of power, money, evil & subterfuge, & it even has the Marvelesque #NineEntities

So @DeSmogUK & @bakerstherald have done a lot of the hard work for you in mapping the network of lobbyists & campaigners based out of offices in & around Westminster’s 55 Tufton St, & spelling out the catastrophic consequences of their malign ambitions.

Thousands gathered in #Sheffield to welcome Little Amal, a puppet depicting a 10-year-old refugee, who has travelled almost 4,970 miles from the Syria/Turkey border to the UK. ❤

Amal, Arabic for hope, arrived in the UK's first City of Sanctuary by boat.

The chancellor twice used the phrase "debt down" in his Budget speech.

Public debt is measured in different ways, but "headline" debt, in the year to the end of March 2021, UK debt stood at £2.2 trillion, up from £1.9 trillion the previous year.

"The independent watchdog said that our plans in the round will reduce carbon emissions & move us further along the path to net zero",

OBR: the budget includes tax measures that will make net zero more difficult by lowering the price of motoring & domestic air travel.
"We cut taxes for millions of the lowest paid".

Of the 4.4 million households currently claiming universal credit, 3.2 million will be worse off overall from the loss of the £20 a week, & just 1.2 million will be better off because of the changes to universal credit.
