Thread: The Travis Scott Astroworld disaster

This analysis by Todd Grande PhD is on point. He's a very good commentator on social issues. I don't agree with every opinion he gives (on other matters) & that's OK.

Grande's video lists the previous criminal charges and related incidents that should have alerted Houston Police and other officials that a fatal stampede event was highly likely.

Large events have to have a detailed security plan.
Authorities should have forced the performance to stop.

It would not have saved every life but it might have saved some of them.

I hope that every event manager and relevant LE agency ensures this NEVER happens again in the US.
The Astroworld 2021 disaster is a symptom of the recklessness and stupidity of many people in the world today. I know that people my age have always said this about some within the younger age groups - and I swore I wouldn't become that person. Oh well.
I grew up in the 70s and 80s. Sure, there were disasters, wars, terrorism then too. But objectively, the 21st century is turning out to be something else, compared to those years.

The person most culpable for these (so far) 8 deaths is Travis Scott (Jacques Bermon Webster.)
Next are the crowd members who deliberately worsened the stampede, presumably for their own entertainment.

I haven't yet been able to confirm if one or more people were injecting opioids into others but that's just... wow.

I've always said that could be used in terrorism.
Certainly not saying this was a terrorist attack - the mundane facts of it are bad enough on their own.

But when security lose control of a 50,000 strong crowd, anything can happen. Not to mention the spread of Covid, in TX: already second only to FL for covidiots in govt.
At such events, usual industry practice is to use barrier fencing to break up the crowd a bit. That would've saved lives. Security planners knew in advance his record of inciting violence at events. He's just one more felon now added to an already covid-stretched justice system.
Like most people did with Alec Baldwin, anyone with even a slightly operational moral compass, should denounce Travis Scott's actions and distance themselves from him asap.

Laws aren't enough to keep people safe; We need to stand up for what is morally, ethically right.
These two men have a lot in common. Lack of insight or remorse. Selfishness. Cowardice. With Alec Baldwin, we know he shows signs of narcissistic personality disorder and cruelty toward the vulnerable (eg his own daughter, the child of the woman he recklessly shot.)
I'm referring to Baldwin's photo op with Halyna Hutchins' widower and 9 year old son (Matthew and Andros Hutchins.)

He exploited an already extremely traumatized boy, for his own public image. And the 2007 voicemail to his then 12 year old daughter shows you who Baldwin is.
It doesn't matter if you're left, right, or in between. Most of us know instinctively when a person in power is abusing it for their own gain, at the expense of others, and often those who are the most vulnerable.

We have an epidemic of NPD-type personality disorders.
After the artist, and those in the crowd who deliberately made the disaster worse, anyone whose position in the event's management gave them a duty of care is also culpable.

Just threaten to shut off the mains power for a minute, then do it. That would have gotten attention.
If nothing else, the sound of the music made rescues harder. So many attendees and first responders will have been traumatized at this event.

I will be interested to see what, if anything, the R governor of TX says. Guessing he will blame Houston officials.
And there is definitely a racism issue here. So many maga cult followers openly stereotype POC as "thugs" "gangsters" "looters" etc. I've seen several POC in the cult do this, too.

Until I was #XGOP I didn't see this clearly. I do now.

nytimes.com/2021/01/13/opi…
I point that out just to note that many on the right wing will disregard the disaster altogether, because if they can apportion blame to POC, many of them will. This sort of thing helps decent people to realize they are in a cult, drip by drip.

Stop condoning racist behavior.
The style of performance used by this artist was effectively condoned by corporations such as Nike and McDonalds. And media like Rolling Stone and the WaPo.

If true, Harry Markle should produce the evidence and also give testimony on all this. If my Queen, Charles, or William had felt this way they would've told the PM, who then could've used the normal diplomatic channels to tell the legitimate US *authorities.* Harry is a child.
If you're new to the UK royal watching side of my Twitter account, know this: I predicted years ago that Harry would quit the firm, and I saw early on the danger posed by his C-grade actress girlfriend.

It has nothing at all to do with anyone's race.
I've been a royal watcher since childhood in the 1970s. HM the Queen is literally my head of state here in NZ.

I have forgiven her heir for his domestic conduct and I became much better informed about his late ex-wife's conduct during their marriage. Few know she cheated first.

Thread: "Paid leave is a right not a privilege."

This is obviously false. A right you can't enforce is not a right.

But in any case, paid family leave would obv. be good for the American economy & for Americans. Esp. in the post pandemic economy.

The most important medium to long term economic issue in developed countries since the industrial revolution has been labor supply & demand, AKA workforce participation. Everything else rests upon this.

Policies on gender equality & immigration are central to labor policy.
I'm an amateur genealogist and hopefully one day a professional genealogist. Every day as I track the long recorded history of my ancestors I see evidence of immigration choices made for economic reasons. Long before modern NZ was founded in 1840, they were moving within the UK.

Found on the #WhiteWomen hashtag feed.

It's common for a far right account like @libsoftiktok to:

1. Deny they're far right
2. Conflate "woke" with "racist" and
3. Completely misunderstand the outcome of the VA Gov race.

My thoughts on why, follow.
IMO (as a political scientist and longtime observer of US politics) there are multiple reasons why Youngkin won #VAgov over McAuliffe.

First, no VA governor has won a second term in generations.

And elections soon after the WH changes hands almost always go to the oppo party.
I firmly believe that the VA outcome was based largely on local, idiosyncratic reasons, not a national trend.

Accordingly, fellow pro-democracy folk need not be sad today. Nothing has changed.

But it's good that more are waking up to the five alarm emergency the US is in rn.

Thread: This clip re the #VAgov race has an interview w/ a white woman claims "there's not a lot of racism" in Loudon County & (unironically) that "if you talk about it less you're gonna notice [it] less."

I'm a white woman who disagrees with her take.

I know there's a damaging and unacceptable level of racist behavior in every county of the US (and FWIW in every part of my own country, NZ.) Logically, the level of it in the state of VA would be above average for the US.

Rs are being blatantly obvious in their racism now.
My understanding of the level of racism in the GOP has changed over the past 5 years. It was more well hidden.

Yes, racism from one group to another can be found among Rs and Ds. This thread is about racism toward African Americans, as the largest group affected.

Thread: My Queen is fully in charge of her faculties.

I can understand HM declining an 800-mile round trip from Windsor to Glasgow as she takes some rest.

Chris Ship's coverage of the royals is among the best but he too has slipped into patronizing her about her health.
TBH I think the pearl-clutching about who makes the decisions on how the Queen spends her time (hint: the Queen) has more to do with resistance toward my future King, Charles III.

I'm loyal to her, and she approves of him.

End of story.
My opinion of the future King Charles III has ebbed and flowed in the years since I first knew of his existence. That was in about 1977, when he was 31.

He has been taking on more responsibility in the palace machine for a good 20 years or so. I think he's going to do well.

I've been thinking about what the pro-democracy majority of Americans can do with Trump assets that will be seized. The Old Post Office in DC is owned by fed govt & TFG has a license to occupy.

It would make an excellent museum to help us #NeverForgetJan6 & far right fascism.
Mar-a-Lago was built for a cereal heiress who left it to the federal govt in her will. The idea was for it to be a kind of Winter White House. That idea never took off and it was put up for sale in the 80s. The buyer was Donald Trump, who restored and modernized it. (continued)
When his assets are seized the property could again be in the hands of the government. I think the residents of Palm Beach deserve the peace and quiet they enjoyed before 2017, so increasing the traffic and noise is a bad idea...
