In New York City, 1964, a woman was raped and murdered in front of 38 witnesses.

Not one of them called the police.

A thread on the dangers of our psychological biases 👇 Image
After her night shift at a bar, Kitty Genovese was followed home by Winston Moseley.

100m from safety, he stabbed her with a hunting knife.

One witness saw the struggle and shouted:

"Let that girl alone."

Moseley fled.

But not for long.
Genovese tried to crawl to safety,

But the door was locked.

30 minutes later, Moseley returned.

His face covered by a hat.

He stabbed her again.

Raped her.

Stole $49.

And left her for dead.
She was found shortly after by her best friend.

An ambulance arrived,

But it was too late.

Her death shocked the country.

But the investigation that followed has made this one of the most infamous murders of modern times 👇
It was reported 38 witnesses could have prevented the brutal murder of Genovese.

People were furious.

There was uproar due to the ‘Moral Decay’ of modern society.

Until psychologists stepped in.

And found this was an error of misjudgement,

Not a cause of cruelty.
This led to the term ‘Bystander Effect’.

And it’s a result of 3 biases in combination.

The importance?

Groupthink is dangerous. Safety in numbers is a lie.

You need to be aware of:

1. Diffusion of responsibility
2. Evaluation apprehension
3. Pluralistic ignorance
More People, Less Blame

We expect others to act,

And see responsibility as less important in numbers.

This triggers a feedback loop of inaction.

So, if you find yourself disagreeing with the herd -

Ask:

Am I avoiding the right action because other people are too?
Opinions are Shackles

Fear of judgement is an evolutionary mechanism.

We want to fit in with our tribe, even if the action isn't right.

Or goes against our nature.

If you avoid something because of what others might think, remember:

Only you live out the consequences.
Independent Thinking is Tough

If a group holds a belief, we go along...

But often, it’s not the majority we follow.

But the loudest.

And we know that doesn't mean the best.

This is why it’s important to stand up for what you believe in.

One voice can spark a revolution.
This tragedy highlights something we should all be aware of.

In a group, biases can be amplified just as much as they are diluted.

So remember:

You are an individual.

Don’t be afraid to be different.

To act when others aren’t.

And to follow what feels right.

Why I quit my $150k Job as a Cosmetic Dentist to Become a Writer

=THREAD=
My hands shook as I walked into my boss’s office.

In 24 hours, I would be starting a new role at a great clinic.

I was 29 years old.

And about to quit my career.
My boss was disappointed.

My friends were shocked.

My family concerned.

Dentistry isn’t a career you walk away from.

(Well, according to them)...

But here’s why I did:

Your level of success is determined by the quality of your thoughts.

Here’re my 7 favourite ideas on building a strong mindset from James Clear 👇🧵
Most people spend their lives growing on poor foundations.

But if you want to do something truly great,

The journey begins in your mind.

These attitudes will help.
“Aim to be great in 10 years.”

Society has normalised immediate gratification.

Long-term thinking is rare.

Here’s the truth:

There’s little you can’t accomplish with an increased time frame.

Compounding is powerful.

So, set a 10-year plan.

Then take it a day at a time.

You need to try this👇🧵
This is a tactic A-list copywriters swear by.

But many people question if it works.

Handwriting sales pages.

I was skeptical too.

Success leaves clues, after all.

1/3rd of your life is spent working.

Not enjoying it is unacceptable.

Here’re 6 Psychological Biases You Must Overcome to Pursue Your Dream Career 👇
Several months ago, I finally took the plunge and quit my job to build a business online.

It was the scariest decision I made.

And it was only possible once I removed the biases that held me back.

Here's what they are - and how you can beat them.
Sunken Cost Fallacy

We keep investing in what we've invested in before.

Even if it isn't right for us.

It hurts to admit our past was ‘wasted’.

It feels like failure.

But Warren Buffett once said, “The best thing to do when you find yourself in a hole is to stop digging.”

Stoicism is perfect for the ambitious.

But the best advice came from a slave.

Here’re 7 powerful ideas from Epictetus that will help you achieve success 🧵
“Small-minded people blame others. Average people blame themselves. The wise see all blame as foolishness.”

Blame focuses on the bad:
• It solves nothing
• It makes you bitter
• It ruins relationships

Instead:

Use your energy to change the future, not resent the past.
“It is impossible for a man to learn what he thinks he already knows.”

The ego hates looking stupid.

And so we fail to learn.

But the more you know about life, the better you can navigate it.

So, always presume you know nothing.

And you’ll learn everything.

Do you wish you were more confident?

10 years ago, I could barely talk to a stranger. Now, the people I grew up with don't recognise me.

Here're 7 simple but effective tactics you can use to build great self-esteem 🧵 👇
When you have low confidence, you can be your worst enemy.

But if you stop getting in your own way,

I promise you'll do amazing things.

Here’s what I found helped me.
Own Your Flaws

Trust me,

It feels easier to hide your flaws.

But avoidance isn’t a solution – it’s a plaster.

While everyone buries theirs, dig yours up.

Make jokes about them.

Show vulnerability.

And over time, you'll rule them - instead of being ruled by them.
