Why I quit my $150k Job as a Cosmetic Dentist to Become a Writer

=THREAD=
My hands shook as I walked into my boss’s office.

In 24 hours, I would be starting a new role at a great clinic.

I was 29 years old.

And about to quit my career.
My boss was disappointed.

My friends were shocked.

My family concerned.

Dentistry isn’t a career you walk away from.

(Well, according to them)...

But here’s why I did:
Sometimes, you can be in the right job for the wrong reasons.

For me, that meant money.

Security.

Status.

The things society tells you to want.

But it’s easy to get wrapped up in the rat race.

And forget why you run in the first place.
I believed that fulfilment was monetized.

That if you have money in the bank,

You’re doing well.

And trading time to make that happen is worth every second.

But then I found @naval,

And discovered just how wrong I was.
See, we’re at the early stage of the digital age.

People are realizing they are more than their 9-5.

That online, creativity and curiosity is rewarded.

And if you’re willing to put in the work,

And follow what you believe in,

You can be free.
Society doesn’t encourage this journey.

We've normalized working jobs we tolerate to afford lifestyles we don’t need.

You are different if you decide not to play the game.

If you choose purpose over a paycheck.

And different is dangerous.
But life is too short for the wrong career.

It needs to fulfil you.

It needs to inspire you.

It needs to be aligned with who you are and what you want to achieve.

Because if it doesn’t, you will never truly be free.

Like @dvassallo says,

"Only intrinsic motivation lasts"
It’s not easy to embrace uncertainty & put in the work to make a change.

But things worth doing rarely are.

See, people think purpose is found.

But to find implies it’s lost.

It doesn't exist. It isn't waiting for you.

You need to create it.

You do that through struggle.
You have something that makes you special.

An attitude. A talent. A story.

Something you believe in.

And you need to give your energy toward it.

To fuel the flame and let it grow.

Because change will never come through inaction.
This doesn't mean quitting your job tomorrow.

Like @jackbutcher says, you hedge your bets.

So, find something you love to do.

Not for status or external validation,

But for curiosity and passion.

And give yourself to it.
People may say you’re being silly.

That you need to be realistic.

That the internet is a ‘pipedream’

The truth?

Goals are only silly until they are achieved.

It may take years,

But as Epictetus says, there's no greater goal than freedom.

Because then you can begin to live.
@Naval said happiness is a choice.

But that’s inaccurate.

It’s a daily decision to ignore the easy path.

To push toward something more.

To pursue purpose and choose meaning over money.

So, put in the work. Focus on your dream.

Build a life you don’t need to retire from.

In New York City, 1964, a woman was raped and murdered in front of 38 witnesses.

Not one of them called the police.

A thread on the dangers of our psychological biases 👇 Image
After her night shift at a bar, Kitty Genovese was followed home by Winston Moseley.

100m from safety, he stabbed her with a hunting knife.

One witness saw the struggle and shouted:

"Let that girl alone."

Moseley fled.

But not for long.
Genovese tried to crawl to safety,

But the door was locked.

30 minutes later, Moseley returned.

His face covered by a hat.

He stabbed her again.

Raped her.

Stole $49.

And left her for dead.

Your level of success is determined by the quality of your thoughts.

Here’re my 7 favourite ideas on building a strong mindset from James Clear 👇🧵
Most people spend their lives growing on poor foundations.

But if you want to do something truly great,

The journey begins in your mind.

These attitudes will help.
“Aim to be great in 10 years.”

Society has normalised immediate gratification.

Long-term thinking is rare.

Here’s the truth:

There’s little you can’t accomplish with an increased time frame.

Compounding is powerful.

So, set a 10-year plan.

Then take it a day at a time.

Want to become great at copywriting, 10x faster?

You need to try this👇🧵
This is a tactic A-list copywriters swear by.

But many people question if it works.

The technique?

Handwriting sales pages.

And I'll admit...

I was skeptical too.
But I gave it a go.

Success leaves clues, after all.

The target:
45 minutes per day
2 months

Here’s what I found:

1/3rd of your life is spent working.

Not enjoying it is unacceptable.

Here’re 6 Psychological Biases You Must Overcome to Pursue Your Dream Career 👇
Several months ago, I finally took the plunge and quit my job to build a business online.

It was the scariest decision I made.

And it was only possible once I removed the biases that held me back.

Here's what they are - and how you can beat them.
Sunken Cost Fallacy

We keep investing in what we've invested in before.

Even if it isn't right for us.

It hurts to admit our past was ‘wasted’.

It feels like failure.

But Warren Buffett once said, “The best thing to do when you find yourself in a hole is to stop digging.”

Stoicism is perfect for the ambitious.

But the best advice came from a slave.

Here’re 7 powerful ideas from Epictetus that will help you achieve success 🧵
“Small-minded people blame others. Average people blame themselves. The wise see all blame as foolishness.”

Blame focuses on the bad:
• It solves nothing
• It makes you bitter
• It ruins relationships

Instead:

Use your energy to change the future, not resent the past.
“It is impossible for a man to learn what he thinks he already knows.”

The ego hates looking stupid.

And so we fail to learn.

But the more you know about life, the better you can navigate it.

So, always presume you know nothing.

And you’ll learn everything.

Do you wish you were more confident?

10 years ago, I could barely talk to a stranger. Now, the people I grew up with don't recognise me.

Here're 7 simple but effective tactics you can use to build great self-esteem 🧵 👇
When you have low confidence, you can be your worst enemy.

But if you stop getting in your own way,

I promise you'll do amazing things.

Here’s what I found helped me.
Own Your Flaws

Trust me,

It feels easier to hide your flaws.

But avoidance isn’t a solution – it’s a plaster.

While everyone buries theirs, dig yours up.

Make jokes about them.

Show vulnerability.

And over time, you'll rule them - instead of being ruled by them.
