Big news from #COP26 overnight - the draft decision text is not perfect, but does call for an accelerated phase out of coal and fossil fuel subsidies, both absolutely critical steps to securing a safer future for our kids and planet:

China and the US also announced a landmark agreement to work together on tackling the climate crisis - it acknowledges climate change as an existential crisis, focusing on the 1.5C goal and action this decade (two things Australia remains recalcitrant on):

Unfortunately for us, Australia’s representatives are still blocking action & lobbying to weaken the #COP26 decision text - working with Saudi Arabia to try and remove references to 1.5C (what do they want to target?!) & the phasing out of fossil fuels.

The International Energy Agency, a conservative economic body, has made it entirely clear that advanced economies must phase out coal by 2030 to avoid catastrophic climate impacts.

News also broke today that lobbying for coal at #COP26 isn’t enough for the Morrison government - they have also been lobbying UNESCO to remove reference to the 1.5C limit to protect World Heritage sites, like the Great Barrier Reef:

With all this going on, it’s no surprise that Australia was yesterday, once again, ranked dead last out of 60 countries for @ScottMorrisonMP’s lacklustre climate policy response:

The Morrison government’s continued representation of fossil fuel vested interests over the people of Australia, not to mention the rest of the world, is absolutely scandalous.
It is critical that the government’s lobbying does not succeed in watering down #COP26 outcomes.

Today Australia was awarded the Fossil of the COP - a ‘prize’ given by a coalition of civil society orgs to the worst performing country throughout the #COP26 climate conference.

Yesterday, @ScottMorrisonMP announced his government’s new electric vehicle strategy.
Unfortunately, just like his net zero ‘plan’ - the ‘strategy’ is just more empty guff - lacking any substance to achieve emissions reductions.

First, the Morrison government has refused to implement fuel efficiency standards, requiring cars to become cleaner over time. This is a tried and tested EV uptake tactic & the bare minimum - adopted by more than 80% of the global vehicle market:

Thanks to these lax environmental standards - which have been called out by global auto-makers time and time again - there is no reason for manufacturers to ship to Australia, and no reason to invest at home:

The investigation, based on interviews with dozens of present and former Pacific leaders as well as Australian diplomats and academics, gives an insight into the strong-arm tactics used by Australia’s leaders behind closed doors to buy silence on climate.

If Australia is serious about a commitment to halt and reverse global #deforestation at #COP26 some things are going to have to change.
The truth is, @ScottMorrisonMP and his predecessors have been running what is basically an undeclared war on nature.
