The time is finally here! A thread on our Keynote event follows and stay on Hopin for some post-keynote networking! Happy Black In Immuno Week! #BIIW21
Shout out to our president @AlexisSMobley for welcoming us and the pivotal organizers making this event happen!
Dr. Michael Opata is introducing us to our Keynote Speaker Dr. Faith Osier- a malaria expert doing work all over the African continent and wider global community. She has countless awards from several organizations including #WHO and #WellcomeTrust
Dr. Faith Osier hopes to make malaria- falciprium malaria-a thing of the distant past as it is a heavy financial and physical burden both for the individual and broader public health infrastructure
Did you know that RTS,S Malaria Vaccine is an approved vaccine for malaria? The work isn't done yet though-apparently efficacy drops within a year and thus requires a booster vaccination. #BIIW21
The clinical severity of malaria lessens the older an individual is as older individuals gain immunity despite having asymptomatic malaria. Antibodies #FTW as IgG is passively transferred and used as a treatment #BIIW21
Dr. Osier centers the responsible, ethical care in clinical trials by providing residential care, gaining informed consent, and making intentional decisions in experimental design #BIIW21
EXCITING DATA ALERT: "immunology working in front of your very eyes" giving individuals parasites and seeing the resulting parasite load- exponential growth or no load at all. Deets in #JCI-Insights #BIIW21
There's a negative correlation between having marazoite-specific antibodies and parasite load; antibodies protect again! #BIIW21
Doing the important work at the bench for the bedside! Reach out to them! #BIIW21

More published data from Osier lab #BIIW21
What does it mean to have more Fc breadth in malaria? Seems like antibody binding increases with more Fc breadth so it's not just having IgG but having a wide breadth of Fc functionality #BIIW21
By studying Fc activity and functionality we can better develop future malaria vaccines #BIIW21 Keynote speaker Dr. Faith Osier
Get ready for #ImmunoDiversity! Let us know anything you learned from this event! We're so excited and ready to build up this thread! #BIIW21 1/
Do we think #Immunology/#STEM stacks up as a welcoming and inclusive field? The general consensus is that #DEI in society is the same in #STEM, but at least we are having conversations around it even if action is slow 2/
Oh, don't forget to follow: @robclayrivers and @danne_phd as they discuss this important topic. 3/
